Florida is one of fifteen jurisdictions in the United States that have enacted a direct file statute that grants prosecutors the ability to transfer juveniles from the juvenile justice system to adult court. Critiques of the direct file statute have focused on its effectiveness on deterrence and recidivism, its arbitrariness in application, and the tension with the role of juvenile justice in reforming rather than punishing youth. This Note explores the harmful consequences of the direct file statute on non-citizen youth in immigration proceedings and the probability of obtaining immigration relief. An adult conviction as opposed to a juvenile delinquency adjudication is grounds for immigration proceedings and also bars to relief such as Special Immigration Juveniles Status. Additionally, the greater cooperation between local law enforcement in adult jail systems and Immigration Customs Enforcement increases the likelihood that juveniles with adult convictions will face immigration proceedings as a result of their immigration status

A Case Report Discussing The Options for Placement of Glaucoma Drainage Devices in the Presence of Corneal Decompensation

Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to discuss how the various placements of glaucoma drainage implants relate to corneal decompensation. Method: A 58-year Hispanic female presented for evaluation of decreased vision in the left eye for 2 years. This is a case report of a patient who underwent a secondary surgery to replace the anterior tube shunt implantation with a posterior shunt implantation following development of severe corneal decompensation. Results: Glaucoma tube shunt implants inserted into the ciliary sulcus of pseudophakic eyes shield the cornea offering protection against decompensation and avoid the risk of posterior segment complications. Conclusions: Placement of glaucoma drainage implants into the ciliary sulcus in pseudophakic patients with shallow anterior chambers, abnormal irido-corneal anatomy, or those at risk for corneal decompensation is a safe and effective method of not only lowering the intraocular pressure but also protecting the cornea against decompensation. As primary eye care providers, optometrists need to know the various treatment options and adverse effects associated with each procedure

Reframing anti-colonial theory for the diasporic context

In teaching and dialoguing with students and colleagues we have on a number of occasions had to grapple with questions such as: What is the ‘anti-colonial’? How is this different from a ‘post-colonial’ approach? And how are we to articulate an anti-colonial prism as a way of thinking and making sense of current colonial relations and procedures of colonization? These are tough questions complicated by the apparent mainstream privileging and intellectual affection for the “post-colonial” over “anti-colonial”. This paper is purposively written to provoke a debate as a contestation of ideas of the current ‘post’ context. We are calling for a nuanced reading of what constitutes an intellectual subversive politics in the ongoing project of decolonization for both colonized and dominant bodies. We ask our readers to consider the possibilities of a counter theoretical narrative or conception of the present in ways that make theoretical sense of the everyday world of the colonized, racialized, oppressed and the Indigene. We bring a politicized reading to the present as a moment of practice, to claim and reclaim our understandings of identity in the present with implications for how we theorise a Diasporic identity. We challenge the intellectual seduction to equally flatten notions of identity and relations as simply fluid, in flux or something to be complicated/contested. We believe there is something that must not be lost in reclaiming past powerful notions regarding particularly the marginalized understandings of their identities for the present. Thus we revive anti-colonial discourse, building on early anticolonial thinking and practice. We are bringing a particular reading of the ‘colonial’ that is relevant to the present in which both nations, states and communities, as well as bodies and identities are engaged as still colonized and resisting the colonial encounter.peer-reviewe

Citizenship Education and Embodied ways of Knowing: What can be learned from the voices of Ghanaian youth in schooling and education?

This article examines Ghanaian youth voices about issues of personal and moral character development through the teachings of local embodied ways of knowing and how such ways of knowing further inform our understanding of discipline and the socialization of Ghanaian youth to become responsible citizens.  We briefly explore the theoretical and methodological underpinnings of researching moral character development, the question of discipline and the relations to youth and citizenship responsibilities through youth voices. We argue youth voices show complex understandings of embodied ways of knowing relating to questions of citizenry, discipline, character, moral, and respect.  The paper hence offers insights toward reforms needed in educational delivery (teaching, learning and instruction), as well as values of education to address the question of youth voice, decolonization, discipline, and embodied ways of knowing, so as to enhance the possibilities of coming to know citizenry, character, moral and community

A Case Report Discussing an Uncommon Peripheral Exudative Hemorrhagic Chorioretinopathy

Purpose: The purpose of this case report is to discuss an uncommon, unique hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy. Method: A 79-year-old-white female presented to clinic with complaints of difficulty reading at close distances and seeing faces at far distances in both eyes. An 85-year old white female presented with no visual complaints but stated redness in the nasal corner of her right eye. This is a case report of two patients that presented with geographic atrophy of the macula as well as midperipheral RPE alterations in both eyes, which resembled intraretinal hemorrhages. Results: The ocular findings associated with peripheral exudative hemorrhagic chorioretinopathy may include midperipheral intraretinal hemorrhages, peripheral RPE mottling, subretinal fluid or hemorrhages, subretinal exudation, pigment epithelial detachments, and/or vitreous hemorrhages. Conclusions: Although this condition is rare, primary eye care providers should be aware of this unique clinical entity, its relationship to age-related macular degeneration, and when these patients require a referral to a retinal specialist

Gemini NIFS survey of feeding and feedback processes in nearby Active Galaxies: I - Stellar kinematics

We use the Gemini Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) to map the stellar kinematics of the inner few hundred parsecs of a sample of 16 nearby Seyfert galaxies, at a spatial resolution of tens of parsecs and spectral resolution of 40 km/s. We find that the line-of-sight (LOS) velocity fields for most galaxies are well reproduced by rotating disk models. The kinematic position angle (PA) derived for the LOS velocity field is consistent with the large scale photometric PA. The residual velocities are correlated with the hard X-ray luminosity, suggesting that more luminous AGN have a larger impact in the surrounding stellar dynamics. The central velocity dispersion values are usually higher than the rotation velocity amplitude, what we attribute to the strong contribution of bulge kinematics in these inner regions. For 50% of the galaxies, we find an inverse correlation between the velocities and the $h_3$ Gauss-Hermitte moment, implying red wings in the blueshifted side and blue wings in the redshifted side of the velocity field, attributed to the movement of the bulge stars lagging the rotation. Two of the 16 galaxies (NGC 5899 and Mrk 1066) show an S-shape zero velocity line, attributed to the gravitational potential of a nuclear bar. Velocity dispersion maps show rings of low-$\sigma$ values (50-80 km/s) for 4 objects and "patches" of low-sigma for 6 galaxies at 150-250 pc from the nucleus, attributed to young/ intermediate age stellar populations.Comment: To be published in MNRA

Energy-momentum scheme for nonlinear thermo-electro-elastodynamics

The present contribution aims at the consistent discretisation of nonlinear, coupled thermoelectro-elastodynamics. In that regard, a new one-step implicit and thermodynamically consistent energymomentum integration scheme for the simulation of thermo-electro-elastic processes undergoing large deformations will be presented. The consideration is based upon polyconvexity inspired, constitutive models and a new tensor cross product algebra, which facilitate the design of the so-called discrete derivatives. The discrete derivatives are fundamental for the algorithmic evaluation of stresses and other derived variables like entropy density or the absolute temperature leading to a structure preserving integration scheme. In particular, recently published works of the authors concerning consistent time integration of large deformation thermo-elastodynamics and electro-elastodynamics are combined to a unified integration scheme. Numerical computations demonstrate the stability and conservation properties of the proposed energy-momentum scheme

Thrombotic and Thromboembolic Complications in Patients with Adult Congenital Heart Disease

Improved medical and surgical interventions have increased the longevity of patients with congenital heart defects and most such patients live into adulthood. Thrombotic and thromboembolic complications constitute a major cause of mortality and morbidity in patients with adult congenital heart disease (ACHD). Such events include acute coronary syndromes, ischemic stroke (cardioembolic due to thrombus formation in the systemic ventricle, secondary to atrial arrhythmias, or due to paradoxical embolism), and venous thromboembolism. Some thrombotic phenomena are also specific to patients with ACHD, such as those related to Fontan circulation. We provide a succinct overview of thrombotic and thromboembolic complications in patients with ACHD, focusing on stroke and venous thromboembolic events
