Beam Induced Electron Cloud Resonances in Dipole Magnetic Fields
The buildup of low energy electrons in an accelerator, known as electron
cloud, can be severely detrimental to machine performance. Under certain beam
conditions, the beam can become resonant with the cloud dynamics, accelerating
the buildup of electrons. This paper will examine two such effects:
multipacting resonances, in which the cloud development time is resonant with
the bunch spacing, and cyclotron resonances, in which the cyclotron period of
electrons in a magnetic field is a multiple of bunch spacing. Both resonances
have been studied directly in dipole fields using retarding field analyzers
installed in the Cornell Electron Storage Ring (CESR). These measurements are
supported by both analytical models and computer simulations
Effects of telmisartan and ramipril on adiponectin and blood pressure in patients with type 2 diabetes
<b>Background:</b>
Adiponectin is secreted by adipose tissue and may play a role in cardiovascular disease. We examined adiponectin levels in patients with type 2 diabetes who participated in the Telmisartan vs. Ramipril in Renal Endothelial Dysfunction (TRENDY) study.
<b>Methods</b>
A total of 87 patients were assessed at baseline and following 9 weeks treatment with the angiotensin-receptor blocker telmisartan (final dose, 80 mg; n = 45) or the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor ramipril (final dose, 10 mg; n = 42). Adiponectin levels were measured in plasma by radioimmunoassay.
<b>Results:</b>
Adiponectin levels were inversely correlated with systolic (SBP; r = -0.240, P < 0.05) and diastolic (DBP; r = -0.227, P < 0.05) blood pressure at baseline and following treatment with telmisartan or ramipril (SBP: r = -0.228, P < 0.05; DBP: r = -0.286, P < 0.05). Changes in adiponectin levels were related to changes in SBP (r = -0.357, P < 0.01) and DBP (r = -0.286, P < 0.01). There was a significant increase in adiponectin levels in the telmisartan (0.68 (95% confidence interval (CI), 0.27 to 1.10) µg/ml, P < 0.01) but not in the ramipril group (0.17 (95% CI, -0.56 to 0.90) µg/ml, P = 0.67). Blood pressure reduction in the telmisartan group (DeltaSBP: -13.5 (95% CI, -17.0 to -10.0) mm Hg; ΔDBP: -7.6 (95% CI, -9.8 to -5.3) mm Hg, each P < 0.001) was significantly (P less than or equal to 0.01 for SBP and P < 0.01 for DBP) greater than in the ramipril group (ΔSBP: -6.1 (95% CI, -6.2 to -2.0) mm Hg; ΔDBP: -2.7 (95% CI, -5.0 to -0.5) mm Hg; P < 0.01 and P < 0.05, respectively).
<b>Conclusion:</b>
Adiponectin is correlated with blood pressure in patients with type 2 diabetes. Whether increased adiponectin contributes to the blood pressure–lowering effect of telmisartan needs further study
Observation of a continuous phase transition in a shape-memory alloy
Elastic neutron-scattering, inelastic x-ray scattering, specific-heat, and
pressure-dependent electrical transport measurements have been made on single
crystals of AuZn and Au_{0.52}Zn_{0.48} above and below their martensitic
transition temperatures (T_M=64K and 45K, respectively). In each composition,
elastic neutron scattering detects new commensurate Bragg peaks (modulation)
appearing at Q = (1.33,0.67,0) at temperatures corresponding to each sample's
T_M. Although the new Bragg peaks appear in a discontinuous manner in the
Au_{0.52}Zn_{0.48} sample, they appear in a continuous manner in AuZn.
Surprising us, the temperature dependence of the AuZn Bragg peak intensity and
the specific-heat jump near the transition temperature are in favorable accord
with a mean-field approximation. A Landau-theory-based fit to the pressure
dependence of the transition temperature suggests the presence of a critical
endpoint in the AuZn phase diagram located at T_M*=2.7K and p*=3.1GPa, with a
quantum saturation temperature \theta_s=48.3 +/- 3.7K.Comment: 6 figure
Changes in malaria burden and transmission in sentinel sites after the roll-out of long-lasting insecticidal nets in Papua New Guinea
Papua New Guinea exhibits a complex malaria epidemiology due to diversity in malaria parasites, mosquito vectors, human hosts, and their natural environment. Heterogeneities in transmission and burden of malaria at various scales are likely to affect the success of malaria control interventions, and vice-versa. This manuscript assesses changes in malaria prevalence, incidence and transmission in sentinel sites following the first national distribution of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs).; Before and after the distribution of LLINs, data collection in six purposively selected sentinel sites included clinical surveillance in the local health facility, household surveys and entomological surveys. Not all activities were carried out in all sites. Mosquitoes were collected by human landing catches. Diagnosis of malaria infection in humans was done by rapid diagnostic test, light microscopy and PCR for species confirmation.; Following the roll-out of LLINs, the average monthly malaria incidence rate dropped from 13/1,000 population to 2/1,000 (incidence rate ratio = 0.12; 95 % CI: 0.09-0.17; P < 0.001). The average population prevalence of malaria decreased from 15.7 % pre-LLIN to 4.8 % post-LLIN (adjusted odds ratio = 0.26; 95 % CI: 0.20-0.33; P < 0.001). In general, reductions in incidence and prevalence were more pronounced in infections with P. falciparum than with P. vivax. Additional morbidity indicators (anaemia, splenomegaly, self-reported fever) showed a decreasing trend in most sites. Mean Anopheles man biting rates decreased from 83 bites/person/night pre-LLIN to 31 post-LLIN (P = 0.008). Anopheles species composition differed between sites but everywhere diversity was lower post-LLIN. In two sites, post-LLIN P. vivax infections in anophelines had decreased but P. falciparum infections had increased despite the opposite observation in humans.; LLIN distribution had distinct effects on P. falciparum and P. vivax. Higher resilience of P. vivax may be attributed to relapses from hypnozoites and other biological characteristics favouring the transmission of P. vivax. The effect on vector species composition varied by location which is likely to impact on the effectiveness of LLINs. In-depth and longer-term epidemiological and entomological investigations are required to understand when and where residual transmission occurs and whether observed changes are sustained
Fermi Surface as a Driver for the Shape-Memory Effect in AuZn
Martensites are materials that undergo diffusionless, solid-state
transitions. The martensitic transition yields properties that depend on the
history of the material and may allow it to recover its previous shape after
plastic deformation. This is known as the shape-memory effect (SME). We have
succeeded in identifying the primary electronic mechanism responsible for the
martensitic transition in the shape-memory alloy AuZn by using Fermi-surface
measurements (de Haas-van Alphen oscillations) and band-structure calculations.
This strongly suggests that electronic band structure is an important
consideration in the design of future SME alloys
SpotXplore: a Cytoscape plugin for visual exploration of hotspot expression in gene regulatory networks
Summary: SpotXplore is a plugin for Cytoscape for extraction and visualization of differentially expressed subnetworks (hotspots) from gene networks. The hotspot-based visualization approach enables interactive exploration of regulatory interactions in differentially expressed gene sets, and it allows a researcher to explore gene expression in direct relation to the affected cellular gene network. The hotspots provide a view beyond the commonly used metabolic pathways and gene ontologies
