The role of slip transfer at grain boundaries in the propagation of microstructurally short fatigue cracks in Ni-based superalloys
Crack initiation and propagation under high-cycle fatigue conditions have
been investigated for a polycrystalline Ni-based superalloy by in-situ
synchrotron assisted diffraction and phase contrast tomography. The cracks
nucleated along the longest coherent twin boundaries pre-existing on the
specimen surface, that were well oriented for slip and that presented a large
elastic incompatibility across them. Moreover, the propagation of
microstructurally short cracks was found to be determined by the easy slip
transfer paths across the pre-existing grain boundaries. This information can
only be obtained by characterization techniques like the ones presented here
that provide the full set of 3D microstructural information
Frequency and damping evolution during experimental seismic response of civil engineering structures
The results of the seismic tests on several reinforced-concrete shear walls and a four-storey frame are analysed in this paper. Each specimen was submitted to the action of a horizontal accelerogram, with successive growing amplitudes, using the pseudodynamic method. An analysis of the results allows knowing the evolution of the eigen frequency and damping ratio during the earthquakes thanks to an identification method working in the time domain. The method is formulated as a spatial model in which the stiffness and damping matrices are directly identified from the experimental displacements, velocities and restoring forces. The obtained matrices are then combined with the theoretical mass in order to obtain the eigen frequencies, damping ratios and modes. Those parameters have a great relevance for the design of this type of structures
Negative ions formed in N<sub>2</sub>/CH<sub>4</sub>/Ar discharge – a simulation of Titan's atmosphere chemistry
The formation of negative ions produced in a negative point-to-plane corona discharge fed by a Ar/N2//CH4/ gas mixture has been studied using mass spectrometry. The measurements were carried out in flowing regime at ambient temperature and a reduced pressure of 460 mbar. The CN ? anion has been found to be the most dominant negative ion in the discharge and is believed to be the precursor of heavier negative ions such as C3/N ? and C5/N ? . The most likely pathway for the formation of such molecular anions is H-loss dissociative electron attachment to HCN, H3/CN and H5/CN formed in the discharge. These same anions have been detected in Titan's atmosphere and the present experiments may provide some novel insights into the chemical and physical mechanisms prevalent in Titan's atmosphere and hence assist in the interpretation of results from the Cassini Huygens space mission
Impact of Storage at -80°C on Encapsulated Liver Spheroids After Liquid Nitrogen Storage
For many bioengineered tissues to have practical clinical application, cryopreservation for use on demand is essential. This study examined different thermal histories on warming and short holding periods at different subzero temperatures on subsequent functional recoveries of alginate encapsulated liver spheroids (ELS) for use in a bioartificial liver device. This mimicked transport at liquid nitrogen (-196°C) or dry ice (∼-80°C) temperatures. Holding at -80°C on warming after -196°C storage resulted in ELS expressing significant (p < 0.001) damage compared with direct thaw from liquid nitrogen, with viable cell number falling from 74.0 ± 8.4 million viable cells/mL without -80°C storage to 1.9 ± 0.6 million viable cells/mL 72 h post-thaw after 8 days storage at -80°C. Even 1 day at -80°C after -196°C storage resulted in lower viability (down 21% 24 h post-thaw), viable cell count (down 29% 24 h post-thaw), glucose, and alpha-1-fetoprotein production (reduced by 59% and 95% 24 h from 1 day post-thaw, respectively). Storage at -80°C was determined to be harmful only during the warming cycle. Chemical measurements of the alginate component of ELS were unchanged by cryogenic exposure in either condition
Applications and optimization of cryopreservation technologies to cellular therapeutics
Delivery of cell therapies often requires the ability to hold products in
readiness whilst logistical, regulatory and potency considerations are
dealt with and recorded. This requires reversibly stopping biological time,
a process which is often achieved by cryopreservation. However, cryopreservation
itself poses many biological and biophysical challenges to living
cells that need to be understood in order to apply the low temperature
technologies to their best advantage. This review sets out the history of
applied cryopreservation, our current understanding of the various processes
involved in storage at cryogenic temperatures, and challenges for
robust and reliable uses of cryopreservation within the cell therapy arena
Variation of bone mineral density induced by exercise in postmenopausal women
OBJETIVO: Evaluar la variación de la densidad mineral ósea (DMO) en columna lumbar (CL) y cuello femoral (CF).MÉTODO: 77 mujeres con osteopenia y menopausia, formaron cuatro grupos. Dos con ejercicio físico: uno tratamiento de estrógeno/Calcitonina (n=16), y otro ingesta de Calcio/Vitamina D (n=7). Dos sin ejercicio físico, uno tratamiento estrógeno/Calcitonina (n=27) y otro ingesta Calcio/Vitamina D (n=27). El ejercicio consistió en Fuerza Muscular (65% a 75% de 1RM) y multisaltos de baja a moderada intensidad. La DMO se midió mediante absorciometría. RESULTADOS: En ANOVA 2x2 se encontró homogeneidad (p<0,05) en la DMO tanto en CL y CF entre los tratamientos farmacológicos y nutricionales, heterogeneidad entre los grupos activos y sedentarios (CL p<0,05, CF p<0,01) y heterogeneidad en la interacción (p<0,01) de ambos tratamientos con el ejercicio físico. CONCLUSIONES: El ejercicio físico programado junto con los tratamientos habituales conduce a un mayor incremento de la DMO de en mujeres postmenopáusicasOBJECTIVE: Assess the variation of Bone Mineral Density (BMD) in Lumbar Spine (LS) and Femoral Neck (FN). METHOD: 77 postmenopausal women with osteopenia. Four groups, two groups with exercise: one Estrogen/Calcitonin treatment (n=16), another supplement Calcium/Vitamin D (n=7); two groups without exercise, one Estrogen/Calcitonin treatment (n=27), and another supplement Calcium/Vitamin D (n=27). The exercise program consisted of resistance training (65% to 75% 1RM) and multi-jumps of low-to-moderate intensity. The BMD was evaluated by absorptiometry. RESULTS. ANOVA 2x2, homogeneity (p<0,05) in the BMD in both LS and FN between the pharmacological and nutritional treatments, and heterogeneity between the active and sedentary groups (LS p <0,05, FN p<0,01) as also in the interaction (p<0,01) of the pharmacological/nutritional treatments with the physical exercise were found. Primeras tablas de selvicultura a la carta para masas regulares de Pinus nigra Arn. del Prepirineo Catalán
Three detailed management models are developed for even-aged black pine (Pinus nigra Arn.) stands of the Pyrenees. These models consist of a descriptive part, named Final Stand Type, from the first thinning to the regeneration concepts. Several goals to be reached in terms of final medium diameters and rotations are defined for each site index class. This part is complemented by Management Tables that represent quantitatively the stand evolution according to the proposed treatment regimen.Starting by a selective thinning combined with low thinning, weights and rotations of interventions are spread out at intervals depending on the growth dynamics of the species in the different site index classes. Finally, comparative economic valuation is carried out between the proposed models and the management as uneven-aged forest, which is the traditional management method of these stands in the Pyrenees.Se proponen modelos de gestión detallados para el pino laricio (Pinus nigra Arn.) del Pirineo. Los modelos constan de una parte descriptiva del régimen de tratamientos, denominada Tipo de Bosque Final, desde los primeros clareos hasta las cortas de regeneración, en los que en función de la calidad se definen objetivos a alcanzar en términos de diámetros medios finales y turno. esta se complementa con unas Tablas de Selvicultura a la carta que plasman cuantitativamente la evolución de la masa de acuerdo con el régimen de tratamientos propuesto. Se parte de las claras selectivas mixtas seguida de una clara por lo bajo como tipo de clara, escalonándose los pesos y rotaciones de las intervenciones en función de la dinámica de crecimiento de la especie en las distintas calidades de estación. Por último se realiza una valoración económica comparativa entre los modelos propuestos y la gestión como masa irregular, método tradicional de gestión de estos bosques en el Prepirineo catalán
Entrenamiento de las señales corticales a través de un sistema BMI-EEG, evolución e intervención. A propósito de un caso = Training cortical signals by means of a BMI-EEG system, its evolution and intervention. A case report
INTRODUCTION:
In the last years, new technologies such as the brain-machine interfaces (BMI) have been incorporated in the rehabilitation process of subjects with stroke. These systems are able to detect motion intention, analyzing the cortical signals using different techniques such as the electroencephalography (EEG). This information could guide different interfaces such as robotic devices, electrical stimulation or virtual reality.
CASE REPORT:
A 40 years-old man with stroke with two months from the injury participated in this study. We used a BMI based on EEG. The subject's motion intention was analyzed calculating the event-related desynchronization. The upper limb motor function was evaluated with the Fugl-Meyer Assessment and the participant's satisfaction was evaluated using the QUEST 2.0. The intervention using a physical therapist as an interface was carried out without difficulty.
CONCLUSIONS:
The BMI systems detect cortical changes in a subacute stroke subject. These changes are coherent with the evolution observed using the Fugl-Meyer Assessment
