    The design and testing of a tandem row pump inducer having a supercavitating first stage with a 0.60 hub ratio is presented. The second stage tested was a helical impeller with a 0.70 hub ratio. A cubic arc transition was utilized to accomplish the hub change. The first stage had two blades and the free-vortex design approach was empirically modified based on previous experience. The recommended second stage design having four blades and using cambered blade section is presented but the model was not built or tested. The more simple helix was built instead to reduce cost. Data taken included head generation, cavitation observations and unsteady head fluctuations over the 0-100Hz range

    Growing wheat to maturity in reduced gas pressures

    The main objective of this project was to determine assimilation of CO2 and efficiency of water use in wheat grown to maturity in a low pressure total gas pressure environment. A functional test of the low pressure plant growth chamber system was accomplished in February and March of 1993 wherein this objective was partially achieved. Plants were grown to maturity in the chambers. Data were actively collected during the first 29 days. The plants were allowed to maintain themselves at the CO2 compensation point until day 45 of the study at which point active atmospheric regulation was resumed. This provided data at the vegetative and reproductive stages of the life cycle of the plants. However, this information may not be representative of the performance of the plants due to the loss of low pressure on a number of days during the study, which affected the plants by changing the pressure potential of the tissues. The performance of the system will be discussed on a component by component basis. The maintenance of the plants at the CO2 compensation point was driven by the failure of the computer program operating the system. The software problems that arose during the functional test have since been corrected. Results from the functional test also indicated that the plants were not receiving adequate light and nutrients. The growth chambers have been relocated and the growth room modified to compensate for these deficiencies

    The combination of deforestation due to agricultural frontier expansion and the increased use of fertilizers due to agricultural intensification has lead to an increase in the load of sediments and pollutants that negatively affect water quality in rural areas. This problem is particularly serious in the Colombian Andean region. This study applies a hydrological simulation model to compare the effect of four vegetable coverage management scenarios on nutrient migration from agricultural practices in the Upper Magdalena river basin. The simulation of water movement over hillsides and channels, which was run using the MIKE SHE and MIKE 11 models, showed an acceptable performance (S/σ =0.84, R=0.82, R2=0.67). However, pollutant migration showed a very low sensitivity to vegetable coverage in the configuration of the different model simulations (p > 0.05), with reductions in pollutant loads ranging only between 2 and 4%. Such reductions have to do with the intrinsic properties of vegetation (which act like a barrier to sediment flow,) with its ability to increase soil infiltration (therefore reducing runoff,) and with nutrient absorption by plants

    In the title compound, C4H12O4P2, there are two crystallographically independent half-mol­ecules in the asymmetric unit, both molecules lying on centres of symmetry. Each mol­ecule is connected on both sides to neighbouring mol­ecules via strong O—H⋯O hydrogen bonds. The –POOH groups accept and donate one hydrogen bond in interactions with the neighbouring –POOH group of the adjacent mol­ecule, to give one-dimensional chains along [10]. As each phosphinic acid group donates and accepts one hydrogen bond, the connection between the mol­ecules is best described by a ring motif which can be classified by the Etter symbol R 2 2(8)

    In this article, we review four decades of research on the formation of organizational reputation. Our review reveals six perspectives that have informed past studies: a game theoretic, a strategic, a macro-cognitive, a micro-cognitive, a cultural-sociological, and communicative one. We compare and contrast the different assumptions about what reputation is and how it forms that characterize these perspectives, and we discuss the implications of these differences for our theoretical understanding of stability and change, control and contestation, and the micro-macro relationship in the complex process of reputation formation

    Endomannosidase processes oligosaccharides of α1-antitrypsin and its naturally occurring genetic variants in the Golgi apparatus

    Abstract.: Endomannosidase provides an alternate glucose-trimming pathway in the Golgi apparatus. However, it is unknown if the action of endomannosidase is dependent on the conformation of the substrate. We have investigated the processing by endomannosidase of the α1-antitrypsin oligosaccharides and its disease-causing misfolded Z and Hong Kong variants. Oligosaccharides of wild-type and misfolded α1-antitrypsin expressed in castanospermine-treated hepatocytes or glucosidase II-deficient Phar 2.7 cells were selectively processed by endomannosidase and subsequently converted to complex type oligosaccharides as indicated by Endo H resistance and PNGase F sensitivity. Overexpression of endomannosidase in castanospermine-treated hepatocytes resulted in processing of all oligosaccharides of wild-type and variants of α1-antitrypsin. Thus, endomannosidase does not discriminate the folding state of the substrate and provides a back-up mechanism for completion of N-glycosylation of endoplasmic reticulum-escaped glucosylated glycoproteins. For exported misfolded glycoproteins, this would provide a pathway for the formation of mature oligosaccharides important for their proper trafficking and correct functionin
