Irreversible impact of past land use on forest soils and biodiversity.
Abstract. In western Europe, forest area has been expanding rapidly since the 19th century, mainly on former agricultural land. Previous studies show that plant diversity differs between these recent forests and ancient forests that were already forested at the time of first national cadastral surveys, around 1800. Here, we investigated the duration of such agricultural aftereffects. In northeastern France, large areas were deforested during the Roman occupation and thereafter abandoned to forest. In one such forest that was farmed during the period AD 50-250, we show that species richness and plant communities vary according to the intensity of former agriculture. These variations are linked to longterm changes of chemical and structural soil properties. Hence, we suggest that such effects of past agricultural land use on forest biodiversity may be irreversible on an historical time scale
Ignition conditions for inertial confinement fusion targets with a nuclear spin-polarized DT fuel
The nuclear fusion cross-section is modified when the spins of the interacting nuclei are polarized. In the case of deuterium?tritium it has been theoretically predicted that the nuclear fusion cross-section could be increased by a factor d = 1.5 if all the nuclei were polarized. In inertial confinement fusion this would result in a modification of the required ignition conditions. Using numerical simulations it is found that the required hot-spot temperature and areal density can both be reduced by about 15% for a fully polarized nuclear fuel. Moreover, numerical simulations of a directly driven capsule show that the required laser power and energy to achieve a high gain scale as d-0.6 and d-0.4 respectively, while the maximum achievable energy gain scales as d0.9
Lawson criterion for ignition exceeded in an inertial fusion experiment
For more than half a century, researchers around the world have been engaged in attempts to achieve fusion ignition as a proof of principle of various fusion concepts. Following the Lawson criterion, an ignited plasma is one where the fusion heating power is high enough to overcome all the physical processes that cool the fusion plasma, creating a positive thermodynamic feedback loop with rapidly increasing temperature. In inertially confined fusion, ignition is a state where the fusion plasma can begin "burn propagation" into surrounding cold fuel, enabling the possibility of high energy gain. While "scientific breakeven" (i.e., unity target gain) has not yet been achieved (here target gain is 0.72, 1.37Â MJ of fusion for 1.92Â MJ of laser energy), this Letter reports the first controlled fusion experiment, using laser indirect drive, on the National Ignition Facility to produce capsule gain (here 5.8) and reach ignition by nine different formulations of the Lawson criterion

Numerical analysis of spherically convergent Rayleigh-Taylor experiments on the Nova laser
In the frame of a CEA/US DOE collaboration, convergent experiments have been done on the Nova laser. Numerical simulations with our 2D Lagrangian code FCI2 led the analysis and correctly reproduced the experimental data. From single mode 2D perturbations, ablation front Rayleigh-Taylor instability growth is computed. Moderate and high convergence ratios are addressed. The shrinking of the wavelength plays a prominent role for small convergence ratio and weakly nonlinear hydrodynamics
Developmental vitamin D deficiency alters brain protein expression in the adult rat: Implications for neuropsychiatric disorders
An increased risk for multiple sclerosis and schizophrenia is observed at increasing latitude and in patients born in winter or spring. To explore a possible link between maternal vitamin D deficiency and these brain disorders, we examined the impact of prenatal hypovitaminosis D on protein expression in the adult rat brain. Vitamin D-deficient female rats were mated with vitamin D normal males. Pregnant females were kept vitamin D-deficient until birth whereupon they were returned to a control diet. At week 10, protein expression in the progeny's prefrontal cortex and hippocampus was compared with control animals using silver staining 2-D gels associated with MS and newly devised data mining software. Developmental vitamin D (DVD) deficiency caused a dysregulation of 36 brain proteins involved in several biological pathways including oxidative phosphorylation, redox balance, cytoskeleton maintenance, calcium homeostasis, chaperoning, PTMs, synaptic plasticity and neurotransmission. A computational analysis of these data revealed that (i) nearly half of the molecules dysregulated in our animal model have also been shown to be misexpressed in either schizophrenia and/or multiple sclerosis and (ii) an impaired synaptic network may be a consequence of mitochondrial dysfunction

Update on ignition studies at CEA
This article sums up the theoretical and experimental studies about
ignition. Three experiments are salient this year on the Omega laser in
collaboration with DOE laboratories (1) 3 cones of beams allow to mimic the
LMJ configuration and to get symmetry measurements. (2) We measured
perturbations due to hydro-instability in CHGe planar samples with face-on
and side-on radiographs. (3) We improved our nuclear diagnostics,
particularly the neutron image system tested on direct drive implosions. As far as LMJ target design is concerned, we defined a preliminary domain
corresponding to the possible operation at 2ω. At 3ω we studied the low mode
instability effects on the DT deformation (due to the laser or to the
target) and on the yield. The stability is clearly improved with graded
doped CH for our nominal capsule L1215
