Emotions and Emotion Regulation in Economic Decision Making

    Get PDF
By employing the methodology of experimental economics, the thesis examines the influence of emotions on decision making in electronic auction markets. Subjects\u27 emotional processes are measured by psychophysiological indicators, helping to decipher the coherence of information, emotion (regulation) and decision making. Four chapters build the main body of the thesis and all are constructed similarly: introduction, design, method, results, limitations, theoretical and managerial implications

Gemini NIFS survey of feeding and feedback processes in nearby Active Galaxies: I - Stellar kinematics

    Get PDF
We use the Gemini Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) to map the stellar kinematics of the inner few hundred parsecs of a sample of 16 nearby Seyfert galaxies, at a spatial resolution of tens of parsecs and spectral resolution of 40 km/s. We find that the line-of-sight (LOS) velocity fields for most galaxies are well reproduced by rotating disk models. The kinematic position angle (PA) derived for the LOS velocity field is consistent with the large scale photometric PA. The residual velocities are correlated with the hard X-ray luminosity, suggesting that more luminous AGN have a larger impact in the surrounding stellar dynamics. The central velocity dispersion values are usually higher than the rotation velocity amplitude, what we attribute to the strong contribution of bulge kinematics in these inner regions. For 50% of the galaxies, we find an inverse correlation between the velocities and the h3h_3 Gauss-Hermitte moment, implying red wings in the blueshifted side and blue wings in the redshifted side of the velocity field, attributed to the movement of the bulge stars lagging the rotation. Two of the 16 galaxies (NGC 5899 and Mrk 1066) show an S-shape zero velocity line, attributed to the gravitational potential of a nuclear bar. Velocity dispersion maps show rings of low-σ\sigma values (50-80 km/s) for 4 objects and "patches" of low-sigma for 6 galaxies at 150-250 pc from the nucleus, attributed to young/ intermediate age stellar populations.Comment: To be published in MNRA

How is job satisfaction in Spanish building engineers influenced by training?

    Get PDF
In business environments, training is one of the most important issues for human resource management. Through appropriate training, enterprises can rely on competent and motivated employees, ready to meet technological and strategic requirements. The aim of this study is to investigate training activities for building engineers developed by Spanish construction companies. But it also aims at analysing the effect of training on job satisfaction. A qualitative methodology has been applied, by means of semi-structured interviews to 34 building engineers. ATLAS-ti software has been used for the analysis of the interview contents. Findings reveal that, with the exception of a large company, no planned training has been developed in order to systems, as well compulsory training on risk prevention. Additionally, most engineers follow their own training courses, in order to update knowledge or improve promotion opportunities. Finally, the effect of training on job satisfaction tends to be positive, with increasing effects when it improves work post performance

Impacts of Forest Management on Forest Bird Occurrence Patterns-A Case Study in Central Europe

    Get PDF
The global increase in demand for wood products, calls for a more sustainable management of forests to optimize both the production of wood and the conservation of forest biodiversity. In this paper, we evaluate the status and future trends of forest birds in Central European forests, assuming different forest management scenarios that to a varying degree respond to the demand for wood production. To this end, we use niche models (Boosted Regression Trees and Generalized Linear Models) to model the responses of 15 forest bird species to predictors related to forest stand (e.g., stand volume of specific tree species) and landscape structure (e.g., percentage cover), and to climate (bioclimatic variables). We then define five distinct forest management scenarios, ranging from set-aside to productivity-driven scenarios, project them 100 years into the future, and apply our niche models into these scenarios to assess the birds' responses to different forest management alternatives. Our models show that the species' responses to management vary reflecting differences in their ecological niches, and consequently, no single management practice can benefit all species if applied across the whole landscape. Thus, we conclude that in order to promote the overall forest bird species richness in the study region, it is necessary to manage the forests in a multi-functional way, e.g., by spatially optimizing the management practices in the landscape
