Each appliance has already several controls incorporated. In order to determine the best way to control an appliance in a smart grid context, we present a methodology based on a graphical language, which makes possible an easy identification of the available control strategies and will be used for future developments in terms of smart controls. The Language is divided into two different levels of complexity with different results. First level: Based on an empirical description of the controls available to the user, a first graphical representation of the appliance operation can be produced. This will allow the identification of the electric appliance availability for demand response control strategies based on the appliance existing controllers. Second level: This level requires detailed information and/or measurements of the appliance operation, so that more complex control strategies can be deduced. Due to the more complex operation description some of the deduced strategies, for this second level, could need adding new controls to allow their correct application. However it is up to the user of the language to choose the degree of the description complexity. This second level allows the user to know which components are the more energy and power demanding and how they are controlled, meaning that more accurate strategies can deducted. Manufacturers and power utilities can then identify their control strategies to be implemented in terms of demand response for electrical appliances

Difficult Turned Easy: Suggestion Renders a Challenging Visual Task Simple

Suggestions can cause some individuals to miss or disregard existing visual stimuli, but can they infuse sensory input with nonexistent information? Although several prominent theories of hypnotic suggestion propose that mental imagery can change our perceptual experience, data to support this stance remain sparse. The present study addressed this lacuna, showing how suggesting the presence of physically absent, yet critical, visual information transforms an otherwise difficult task into an easy one. Here, we show how adult participants who are highly susceptible to hypnotic suggestion successfully hallucinated visual occluders on top of moving objects. Our findings support the idea that, at least in some people, suggestions can add perceptual information to sensory input. This observation adds meaningful weight to theoretical, clinical, and applied aspects of the brain and psychological sciences

Towards RF graphene devices: A review

    Get PDF
Graphene has been targeted for a wide variety of applications due to its characteristics. It is a zero-bandgap material, has high conductivity, and high carrier mobility, which makes it a promising material for radiofrequency applications. This review examines the applications of graphene in the design of radiofrequency building blocks, their performance, and current hurdles. Initially, graphene passive devices (inductors, capacitors, antennas, and waveguides) are analyzed, as well as their current modelling techniques. Then, radiofrequency transistors and their modelling are reported and discussed. An insight on the current state of radiofrequency devices is provided which more specifically targets graphene oscillators, multipliers, and mixers. Finally, the current fabrication issues and techniques are analyzed and discussed, providing a global overview on the application of graphene for radiofrequency electronics.Work supported by PTDC/EEI-TEL/29670/2017 - (POCI-01-0145-FEDER-029670), co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), through COMPETE 2020, grant SFRH/BD/141462/2018, grant SFRH/BD/137529/2018, grant UIDB/04436/2020, grant UIDP/04436/2020, and grant UIDB/04650/2020

Evaluating the Role of Host AMPK in Leishmania Burden

Uncorrected proofThe study of host AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation during Leishmania infection imposes distinct types of techniques to measure protein expression and activation, as well as to quantify, at transcription and translational levels, its downstream targets. The investigation of host AMPK protein modulation during Leishmania infection should primarily be assessed during in vitro infections using as a host murine bone marrow-derived macrophages (BMMos). The infection outcome is assessed measuring the percentage of infected cells in the context of BMMos. To evaluate AMPK activity during infection, the expression of AMPK phosphorylated at Thr172 as well as the transcription and translational levels of its downstream targets are evaluated by quantitative PCR and immunoblotting. The modulation of AMPK activity in vivo is determined specifically in sorted splenic macrophages harboring Leishmania parasites recovered from infected mice using fluorescent-labeled parasites in the infectious inocolum. The modulation of AMPK activity was assessed by AMPK activators and inhibitors and also using AMPK, SIRT1, or LKB1 KO mice models. The infection outcome in BMMos and in vivo was further determined using these two different approaches. To finally understand the metabolic impact of AMPK during infection, in vitro metabolic assays in infected BMMos were measured in the bioenergetic profile using an extracellular flux analyzer.Northern Portugal Regional Operational Programme (NORTE 2020), under the Portugal 2020 Partnership Agreement, through the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER) (NORTE-01-0145-FEDER-000013) and the Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT) (contract IF/00021/2014 to R.S.), by FEDER funds through the Operational Competitiveness Programme (COMPETE), and by national funds through FCT (Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia) under the project FCOMP-01-0124-FEDER-011054 (PTDC/SAU-FCF/100749/2008) and PTDC/BIA-MIC/118644/2010. Multi-infrastructure workflow execution for medical simulation in the Virtual Imaging Platform

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper presents the architecture of the Virtual Imaging Platform sup- porting the execution of medical image simulation workflows on multiple comput- ing infrastructures. The system relies on the MOTEUR engine for workflow execu- tion and on the DIRAC pilot-job system for workload management. The jGASW code wrapper is extended to describe applications running on multiple infrastruc- tures and a DIRAC cluster agent that can securely involve personal cluster re- sources with no administrator intervention is proposed. Grid data management is complemented with local storage used as a failover in case of file transfer errors. Between November 2010 and April 2011 the platform was used by 10 users to run 484 workflow instances representing 10.8 CPU years. Tests show that a small per- sonal cluster can significantly contribute to a simulation running on EGI and that the improved data manager can decrease the job failure rate from 7.7% to 1.5%

Static magneto optical birefringence of New Electric Double Layered Magnetic Fluids

    Get PDF
Magnetic birefringence measurements are performed under a static eld on Electric Double Layered Magnetic Fluids based on copper and zinc ferrite nanostructures. The optical birefringence is related to a single-particle e ect and well described by a Langevin model which includes a lognormal distribution of particles. By the eld-induced birefringence level, these new magnetic fluids are comparable to usual ones, a result which could o er a new way for biological applications
