    Der schmale Band stellt bis auf ein kurzes, die Publikation begründendes Vorwort (S. 7–10), einen bereits im Jahre 1998 fertiggestellten Text dar. Er verzichtet auf die Einarbeitung von Literatur, die seitdem, also in den vergangenen zwei Jahrzehnten, erschienen ist. Eigentlich war er für einen Tagungsband des ein Jahr später beendeten Münsteraner Sonderforschungsbereichs „Träger, Felder, Formen pragmatischer Schriftlichkeit im Mittelalter“ vorgesehen, der bislang noch nicht erschienenen ist. Man merkt der Untersuchung an vielen Stellen an, dass sie im Diskussionszusammenhang mit dem damals von Hagen Keller geleiteten SFB-Teilprojekt „Der Verschriftlichungsprozess und seine Träger in Oberitalien (11.–13.Jahrhundert)“ entstand, was aber durchaus kein Schaden ist. Zwar wirkt die Abarbeitung an Thesen der Luhmann’schen Systemtheorie heute etwas antiquiert – und an manchen Stellen auch etwas bemüht („Herstellung von Legitimität im Verfahren“, Kap. 9) –, doch kommt der Vf. unter Anwendung des theoretischen Ansatzes durchaus zu interessanten Beobachtungen und überzeugenden Schlussfolgerungen

    Investigating user response to a hybrid sketch based interface for creating 3D virtual models in an immersive environment

    This research was done in collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology Berlin. It was supported by VISIONAIR, a project funded by the European Commission under grant agreement 262044.Computer modelling of 2D drawings is becoming increasingly popular in modern design as can be witnessed in the shift of modern computer modelling applications from software requiring specialised training to ones targeted for the general consumer market. Despite this, traditional sketching is still prevalent in design, particularly so in the early design stages. Thus, research trends in computer-aided modelling focus on the the development of sketch based interfaces that are as natural as possible. In this paper, we present a hybrid sketch based interface which allows the user to make draw sketches using offline as well as online sketching modalities, displaying the 3D models in an immersive setup, thus linking the object interaction possible through immersive modelling to the flexibility allowed by paper-based sketching. The interface was evaluated in a user study which shows that such a hybrid system can be considered as having pragmatic and hedonic value.peer-reviewe

    Exotic looped trajectories of photons in three-slit interference

    The validity of the superposition principle and of Born\u27s rule are well-accepted tenants of quantum mechanics. Surprisingly, it has been predicted that the intensity pattern formed in a three-slit experiment is seemingly in contradiction with the most conventional form of the superposition principle when exotic looped trajectories are taken into account. However, the probability of observing such paths is typically very small, thus rendering them extremely difficult to measure. Here we confirm the validity of Born\u27s rule and present the first experimental observation of exotic trajectories as additional paths for the light by directly measuring their contribution to the formation of optical interference fringes. We accomplish this by enhancing the electromagnetic near-fields in the vicinity of the slits through the excitation of surface plasmons. This process increases the probability of occurrence of these exotic trajectories, demonstrating that they are related to the near-field component of the photon\u27s wavefunction

    Substituent effects on the electrochemical, spectroscopic, and structural properties of Fischer mono- and biscarbene complexes of Chromium(0)

    A series of ten ferrocenyl, furyl, and thienyl mono- and biscarbene chromium(0) complexes were synthesized and characterized spectroscopically and electrochemically. The single crystal structure of the biscarbene complex [(CO)5Cr═C(OEt)-Fu′-(OEt)C═Cr(CO)5] (4a) was determined: C20H12Cr2O13; triclinic; P1̅; a = 6.2838(5), b = 12.6526(9), c = 29.1888(19) Å, α = 89.575(2), β = 88.030(2), γ = 87.423(2)°; Z = 4. Results from an electrochemical study in CH2Cl2 were mutually consistent with a computational study in showing that the carbene double bond of 1 – 6 is reduced to an anion radical, –Cr–C• at formal reduction potentials < −1.7 V vs FcH/FcH+. The Cr centers are oxidized in two successive one electron transfer steps to Cr(II) via the Cr(I) intermediate. Only Cr(I) oxidation is electrochemically irreversible. Dicationic Cr(II) species formed upon two consecutive one-electron oxidation processes are characterized by a peculiar bonding situation as they are stabilized by genuine CH···Cr agostic interactions. With respect to aryl substituents, carbene redox processes occurred at the lowest potentials for ferrocene derivatives followed by furan complexes. Redox process in the thiophene derivatives occurred at the highest potentials. This result is mutually consistent with a 13C NMR study that showed the Cr═C functionality of furyl complexes were more shielded than thienyl complexes.     The Compton Spectrometer and Imager

    The Compton Spectrometer and Imager (COSI) is a NASA Small Explorer (SMEX) satellite mission in development with a planned launch in 2027. COSI is a wide-field gamma-ray telescope designed to survey the entire sky at 0.2-5 MeV. It provides imaging, spectroscopy, and polarimetry of astrophysical sources, and its germanium detectors provide excellent energy resolution for emission line measurements. Science goals for COSI include studies of 0.511 MeV emission from antimatter annihilation in the Galaxy, mapping radioactive elements from nucleosynthesis, determining emission mechanisms and source geometries with polarization measurements, and detecting and localizing multimessenger sources. The instantaneous field of view for the germanium detectors is >25% of the sky, and they are surrounded on the sides and bottom by active shields, providing background rejection as well as allowing for detection of gamma-ray bursts and other gamma-ray flares over most of the sky.     Genomics of perivascular space burden unravels early mechanisms of cerebral small vessel disease

    Perivascular space (PVS) burden is an emerging, poorly understood, magnetic resonance imaging marker of cerebral small vessel disease, a leading cause of stroke and dementia. Genome-wide association studies in up to 40,095 participants (18 population-based cohorts, 66.3 ± 8.6 yr, 96.9% European ancestry) revealed 24 genome-wide significant PVS risk loci, mainly in the white matter. These were associated with white matter PVS already in young adults (N = 1,748; 22.1 ± 2.3 yr) and were enriched in early-onset leukodystrophy genes and genes expressed in fetal brain endothelial cells, suggesting early-life mechanisms. In total, 53% of white matter PVS risk loci showed nominally significant associations (27% after multiple-testing correction) in a Japanese population-based cohort (N = 2,862; 68.3 ± 5.3 yr). Mendelian randomization supported causal associations of high blood pressure with basal ganglia and hippocampal PVS, and of basal ganglia PVS and hippocampal PVS with stroke, accounting for blood pressure.     Der Band dokumentiert Vorträge und Workshops der internationalen Abschlusstagung des DFG-Schwerpunktprogrammes 1173 „Integration und Desintegration der Kulturen im europäischen Mittelalter“, die Ende Mai 2011 in Berlin stattgefunden hat. Bei der Arbeit im Schwerpunktprogramm hatte sich gezeigt, wie schwierig es ist, Europa im geographischen und historischen Sinne vom Mittelmeerraum mit Nordafrika und Vorder¬asien zu trennen. Daher wurden die Grenzen des mittelalterlichen Europa bewusst überschritten und auch die Geschichte weiter entfernter Länder in den Blick genommen. Als thematischer Schwerpunkt boten sich in diesem Zusammenhang Migrationen an. Migrationen sind ja ein globales Phäno¬men, das an allen Orten und zu allen Zeiten immer wieder die Geschichte der Menschheit prägt und dabei unvermeidlich – selbst in der scheinbaren Isolation einer „Diaspora“ oder „Parallelgesellschaft“ – zu transkulturellen Verflechtungen führt. Fremde und einheimische Gruppen und Individuen werden in neue soziale Umgebungen gerückt und Kontakte oder Konflikte zwischen ihnen erzeugt. Wo aber das jeweilige Leben gegeneinander abgeschottet werden soll, verliert Kultur ihre Inno¬vations¬kraft und versteinert die Gesellschaft. Mit dem Sachthema der „Migrationen“ und mit einem Blick weit über Europa hinaus, bis nach Amerika, Japan und ins südliche Afrika, wird der Übergang von einer eurozentrierten Mittelalterforschung zu einer transdisziplinären Mediävistik in globalen Zusammenhängen markiert

    The Changing Landscape for Stroke\ua0Prevention in AF: Findings From the GLORIA-AF Registry Phase 2

    Background GLORIA-AF (Global Registry on Long-Term Oral Antithrombotic Treatment in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation) is a prospective, global registry program describing antithrombotic treatment patterns in patients with newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation at risk of stroke. Phase 2 began when dabigatran, the first non\u2013vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC), became available. Objectives This study sought to describe phase 2 baseline data and compare these with the pre-NOAC era collected during phase&nbsp;1. Methods During phase 2, 15,641 consenting patients were enrolled (November 2011 to December 2014); 15,092 were eligible. This pre-specified cross-sectional analysis describes eligible patients\u2019 baseline characteristics. Atrial fibrillation&nbsp;disease characteristics, medical outcomes, and concomitant diseases and medications were collected. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results Of the total patients, 45.5% were female; median age was 71 (interquartile range: 64, 78) years. Patients were from Europe (47.1%), North America (22.5%), Asia (20.3%), Latin America (6.0%), and the Middle East/Africa (4.0%). Most had high stroke risk (CHA2DS2-VASc [Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Age&nbsp; 6575 years, Diabetes mellitus, previous Stroke, Vascular disease, Age 65 to 74 years, Sex category] score&nbsp; 652; 86.1%); 13.9% had moderate risk (CHA2DS2-VASc&nbsp;= 1). Overall, 79.9% received oral anticoagulants, of whom 47.6% received NOAC and 32.3% vitamin K antagonists (VKA); 12.1% received antiplatelet agents; 7.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. For comparison, the proportion of phase 1 patients (of N&nbsp;= 1,063 all eligible) prescribed VKA was 32.8%, acetylsalicylic acid 41.7%, and no therapy 20.2%. In Europe in phase 2, treatment with NOAC was more common than VKA (52.3% and 37.8%, respectively); 6.0% of patients received antiplatelet treatment; and 3.8% received no antithrombotic treatment. In North America, 52.1%, 26.2%, and 14.0% of patients received NOAC, VKA, and antiplatelet drugs, respectively; 7.5% received no antithrombotic treatment. NOAC use was less common in Asia (27.7%), where 27.5% of patients received VKA, 25.0% antiplatelet drugs, and 19.8% no antithrombotic treatment. Conclusions The baseline data from GLORIA-AF phase 2 demonstrate that in newly diagnosed nonvalvular atrial fibrillation patients, NOAC have been highly adopted into practice, becoming more frequently prescribed than VKA in&nbsp;Europe and North America. Worldwide, however, a large proportion of patients remain undertreated, particularly in&nbsp;Asia&nbsp;and North America.
