Hypothetical answers to continuous queries over data streams

Continuous queries over data streams may suffer from blocking operations and/or unbound wait, which may delay answers until some relevant input arrives through the data stream. These delays may turn answers, when they arrive, obsolete to users who sometimes have to make decisions with no help whatsoever. Therefore, it can be useful to provide hypothetical answers - "given the current information, it is possible that X will become true at time t" - instead of no information at all. In this paper we present a semantics for queries and corresponding answers that covers such hypothetical answers, together with an online algorithm for updating the set of facts that are consistent with the currently available information

For a Typology of Participation in Community Artistic Practices: the experience of three theater groups in Brazil and Portugal

The article aims to address the participatory dimension as a central feature in contemporary artistic creation, deepening the relationship between processes and results. It has as a starting point the practices of three theater groups in Brazil and Portugal, articulating them with the literature on community artistic practices and civic and political participation. From empirical data, based on participant and non-participant observation and gathering of field notes, structural dimensions of the qualities of the participation experiences in artistic processes were identified, namely: forms of participation of communities (non-professional); dynamics of creative processes; core themes; relationship between professionals and communities; and spaces of creation and presentation

Exploring Male and Female Voices through Epistemic Modality and Evidentiality in Some Modern English Travel Texts on the Canaries

This article describes authorial voice through evidential and epistemic sentential devices in a corpus of 19th and early 20th century travel texts. The corpus contains four works written by female travellers and the other four by men. Therefore, apart from providing a catalogue of the strategies deployed by the authors in order to mark modality and evidentiality, we also report on expected differences in their frequencies of use in relation to the writer’s gender. In addition, the interest of this study lies in the fact that, to the best of our knowledge, no research on writer stance has previously been carried out in texts belonging to the genre of travel writing

Do acto ao pensamento... Do pensamento à matemática

A preocupação do presente artigo é a de enquadrar filogeneticamente e ontogeneticamente o desenvolvimento da matemática, enquadrando-a no contexto da hierarquia da linguagem. Assim, começaremos por situar a matemática ou a linguagem quantitativa como o culminar da dinâmica evolutiva da linguagem. De seguida, faremos referência ao desenvolvimento da linguagem quantitativa, suportando-nos para tal numa teoria do desenvolvimento cognitivo, o qual, como é sabido se organiza do concreto para o abstracto. De seguida, será nossa intenção fazer uma breve referência às diferentes componentes ou áreas da matemática, particularmente a aritmética. Para terminar, e tendo por base o já exposto, referiremos algumas preocupações que devem estar subjacentes ao processo de instrução ou ensino da matemática

Por uma (hiper)pedagogia crítica, plurilingue e multisensorial na aprendizagem de línguas estrangeiras no Ensino Básico

Relatório final de estágio do Mestrado em Ensino de Inglês e Francês ou Espanhol no Ensino BásicoTendo em conta uma pedagogia crítica emancipatória (Jiménez Raya, Lamb & Vieira, 2007) enriquecida por enfoques multisensoriais (Arslan, 2009), pretende-se, com este relatório, dar conta de práticas verdadeiramente interdisciplinares e baseadas numa filosofia de projeto, em que os aprendentes de línguas estrangeiras do Ensino Básico se embrenham com tarefas de índole plurilingue e pluricultural. Neste estudo, pretendemos, por um lado, analisar a realidade educativa dum agrupamento no que concerne o seu contexto socioeducativo e projetos em curso, como o projeto Ensino Precoce Bilingue (da alçada do Ministério da Educação) e Pluri+RED (por nós potenciado) e, por outro lado, evidenciar uma mostra de possíveis boas práticas didático-pedagógicas, com vista a um trabalho sistemático e pró-ativo com a língua enquanto objeto manipulável e potenciador de cidadãos verdadeiramente conscientes da realidade circundante desde uma idade considerada precoce. Concluímos que estas práticas favorecem aprendizagens eficazes e felizes, fomentando o desenvolvimento das competências comunicativa intercultural e plurilingue e duma consciência cultural crítica (Byram, Gribkova & Starkey, 2002) dos nossos alunos
