    The Influence of Silicon Nanoclusters on the Optical Properties of a-SiNx Samples: A Theoretical Study

    By means of ab-initio calculations we investigate the optical properties of pure a-SiNx_x samples, with x∈[0.4,1.8]x \in [0.4, 1.8], and samples embedding silicon nanoclusters (NCs) of diameter 0.5≤d≤1.00.5 \leq d \leq 1.0 nm. In the pure samples the optical absorption gap and the radiative recombination rate vary according to the concentration of Si-N bonds. In the presence of NCs the radiative rate of the samples is barely affected, indicating that the intense photoluminescence of experimental samples is mostly due to the matrix itself rather than to the NCs. Besides, we evidence an important role of Si-N-Si bonds at the NC/matrix interface in the observed photoluminescence trend

Manure matured with a fast and controlled process and compost obtained from digestate of an organic fraction of municipal solid waste (OFMSW) were applied one time on a grapevine row, in two CAVIT vineyards. A physico-chemical characterization of the soils was carried out and biological quality indices QBS-ar (Arthropodological Biocenosis) were calculated. The vegeto-productive monitoring was performed by foliar nutrients analysis and measuring NDVI and SPAD indices. The organic source had a significant fertilizing effect, especially manure, which determined a nutrient increase in soil (P, K and Mg), a rise in photosynthetically active biomass, available nitrogen and potassium in plants. The effects on the biological community of soils and musts quality were negligible.     Early Monitoring Response to Therapy in Patients with Brain Lesions Using the Cumulative SUV Histogram

    Featured Application The study proposes a methodology to evaluate the response of patients with brain lesions to Gamma Knife treatments through the use of Positron Emission Tomography imaging. Gamma Knife treatment is an alternative to traditional brain surgery and whole-brain radiation therapy for treating cancers that are inaccessible via conventional treatments. To assess the effectiveness of Gamma Knife treatments, functional imaging can play a crucial role. The aim of this study is to evaluate new prognostic indices to perform an early assessment of treatment response to therapy using positron emission tomography imaging. The parameters currently used in nuclear medicine assessments can be affected by statistical fluctuation errors and/or cannot provide information on tumor extension and heterogeneity. To overcome these limitations, the Cumulative standardized uptake value (SUV) Histogram (CSH) and Area Under the Curve (AUC) indices were evaluated to obtain additional information on treatment response. For this purpose, the absolute level of [11C]-Methionine (MET) uptake was measured and its heterogeneity distribution within lesions was evaluated by calculating the CSH and AUC indices. CSH and AUC parameters show good agreement with patient outcomes after Gamma Knife treatments. Furthermore, no relevant correlations were found between CSH and AUC indices and those usually used in the nuclear medicine environment. CSH and AUC indices could be a useful tool for assessing patient responses to therapy

    Vascular Dysfunction in a Mouse Model of Rett Syndrome and Effects of Curcumin Treatment

    Mutations in the coding sequence of the X-linked gene MeCP2 (Methyl CpG–binding protein) are present in around 80% of patients with Rett Syndrome, a common cause of intellectual disability in female and to date without any effective pharmacological treatment. A relevant, and so far unexplored feature of RTT patients, is a marked reduction in peripheral circulation. To investigate the relationship between loss of MeCP2 and this clinical aspect, we used the MeCP2 null mouse model B6.129SF1-MeCP2tm1Jae for functional and pharmacological studies. Functional experiments were performed on isolated resistance mesenteric vessels, mounted on a pressurized myograph. Vessels from female MeCP2(+/−) mice show a reduced endothelium-dependent relaxation, due to a reduced Nitric Oxide (NO) availability secondary to an increased Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) generation. Such functional aspects are associated with an intravascular increase in superoxide anion production, and a decreased vascular eNOS expression. These alterations are reversed by curcumin administration (5% (w/w) dietary curcumin for 21 days), which restores endothelial NO availability, decreases intravascular ROS production and normalizes vascular eNOS gene expression. In conclusion our findings highlight alterations in the vascular/endothelial system in the absence of a correct function of MeCP2, and uncover related cellular/molecular mechanisms that are rescued by an anti-oxidant treatment

    Exospheric Na distributions along the Mercury orbit with the THEMIS telescope

    Abstract The Na exosphere of Mercury is characterized by the variability of the emission lines intensity and of its distribution in time scales from less than one hour to seasonal variations. While the faster variations, accounting for about 10–20% of fluctuations are probably linked to the planetary response to solar wind and Interplanetary Magnetic Field variability, the seasonal variations (up to about 80%) should be explained by complex mechanisms involving different surface release processes, loss, source and migrations of the exospheric Na atoms. Eventually, a Na annual cycle can be identified. In the past, ground-based observations and equatorial density from MESSENGER data have been analyzed. In this study, for a more extensive investigation of the exospheric Na features, we have studied the local time and latitudinal distributions of the exospheric Na column density as a function of the True Anomaly Angle (TAA) of Mercury by means of the extended dataset of images, collected from 2009 to 2013, by the THEMIS solar telescope. Our results show that the THEMIS images, in agreement with previous results, registered a strong general increase in sodium abundance at aphelion and a dawn ward emission predominance with respect to dusk ward and subsolar region between 90° and 150° TAA. This behavior can be explained by desorption of a sodium surface reservoir consisting of sodium that is pushed anti-sunward and condenses preferentially in the coldest regions. Our analyses show s a predominance of subsolar line-of-sight column density along the rest of Mercury's orbit. An unexpected relationship between Northward or Southward peak emission and both TAA and local time is also shown by our analysis. This result seems to contradict previous results obtained from different data sets and it is not easily explained, thus it requires further investigations

    Abstract A major outbreak of Hepatitis A Virus (HAV) has swept through Europe between mid-2016 and 2017, mainly within the community of men who have sex with men (MSM). Over the same period, about 1,000 outbreak-related cases of acute Hepatitis A (AHA) were recorded in Lazio region, Italy. We calibrated a Bayesian model to reconstruct likely transmission events within all 44 households where multiple infections were recorded, representing a total of 103 cases from the HAV outbreak in Lazio. Based on information on the observed times of symptom onset, we estimated for the probability distribution function of the HAV generation time and used it to compute the effective and instantaneous reproduction numbers for the considered outbreak from the overall epidemic curve (N = 998 cases). We estimated a mean generation time of 30.2 days (95%CI: 25.2-33.0) and an effective reproduction number of about 1.63 (95% CI: 1.35-1.94). Transmissibility peaked in January 2017, shortly before targeted awareness and vaccination campaigns were put in place by health authorities; however, transmission remained above the epidemic threshold until June 2017. Within households, children (0-15) and young adults (16-30) infected preferentially individuals of the same age class, whereas transmission within older age groups was substantially homogeneous. These results suggest that the implemented interventions were able to slow down HAV transmission, but not to bring it rapidly to a halt. According to our estimates of the HAV transmissibility, about 50% of the at-risk persons should be immunized to prevent similar outbreaks in the future. Our results also indicate spillover from community transmission to household members, suggesting the opportunity of vaccinating household contacts of cases to prevent further spread of the epidemics

    Cyclooxygenase-1 Is Involved in Endothelial Dysfunction of Mesenteric Small Arteries From Angiotensin II–Infused Mice

    Angiotensin II induces endothelial dysfunction by reducing NO availability and increasing reactive oxygen species. We assessed whether cyclooxygenase (COX)-1 or COX-2 participate in the angiotensin II–induced endothelial dysfunction in murine mesenteric small arteries and examined the role of reduced nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide phosphate–dependent reactive oxygen species production. Mice received angiotensin II (600 ng/kg per minute, SC), saline (controls), angiotensin II + apocynin (reduced nicotinamide-adenine dinucleotide phosphate oxidase inhibitor, 2.5 mg/day), or apocynin alone for 2 weeks. Endothelial function of mesenteric arteries was assessed by pressurized myograph. In controls, acetylcholine-induced relaxation was inhibited by N G -monomethyl- l -arginine and unaffected by DFU (COX-2 inhibitor), SC-560 (COX-1 inhibitor), or ascorbic acid. In angiotensin II–infused animals, the attenuated response to acetylcholine was less sensitive to N G -monomethyl- l -arginine, unaffected by DFU, and enhanced by SC-560 and, similarly, by SQ-29548, a thromboxane–prostanoid receptor antagonist. Moreover, response to acetylcholine was unchanged by ozagrel, a thromboxane synthase inhibitor, and normalized by ascorbic acid. Apocynin prevented the angiotensin II–induced vascular dysfunctions. In angiotensin II–infused mice, RT-PCR analysis showed a significant COX-2 downregulation, whereas COX-1 expression was upregulated. These changes were unaffected by apocynin. Modulation of COX isoform by angiotensin II was also documented by immunohistochemistry. In small mesenteric vessels, the reduced NO availability and oxidant excess, which characterize endothelial dysfunction secondary to angiotensin II, are associated with a reduced COX-2 and an increased COX-1 function and expression. Angiotensin II causes an oxidative stress–independent COX-1 overexpression, whereas angiotensin II–mediated oxidant excess production stimulates COX-1 activity to produce a contracting prostanoid endowed with agonist activity on thromboxane–prostanoid receptors
