Particle systems with a singular mean-field self-excitation. Application to neuronal networks
We discuss the construction and approximation of solutions to a nonlinear
McKean-Vlasov equation driven by a singular self-excitatory interaction of the
mean-field type. Such an equation is intended to describe an infinite
population of neurons which interact with one another. Each time a proportion
of neurons 'spike', the whole network instantaneously receives an excitatory
kick. The instantaneous nature of the excitation makes the system singular and
prevents the application of standard results from the literature. Making use of
the Skorohod M1 topology, we prove that, for the right notion of a 'physical'
solution, the nonlinear equation can be approximated either by a finite
particle system or by a delayed equation. As a by-product, we obtain the
existence of 'synchronized' solutions, for which a macroscopic proportion of
neurons may spike at the same time
Earth resources evaluation for New Mexico by LANDSAT-2
The author has identified the following significant results. The Middle Rio Grande project has not yet progressed to the point where mineral exploration sites can be chosen; however, there does appear to be some correlation between the known structure and mineral deposits and the LANDSAT lineament map. A circular feature identified in the southern Magdalena Mountains on LANDSAT-1 imagery agrees well with the location of a newly proposed caldron complex. Several recognized and unrecognized circular features were identified on imagery of the Mogollon-Datil volcanic field. A check of aeromagnetic maps for New Mexico found that the circular features on the LANDSAT imagery showed up as areas of generally high magnetic intensity
Instrumental oscillations in RHESSI count rates during solar flares
Aims: We seek to illustrate the analysis problems posed by RHESSI spacecraft
motion by studying persistent instrumental oscillations found in the
lightcurves measured by RHESSI's X-ray detectors in the 6-12 keV and 12-25 keV
energy range during the decay phase of the flares of 2004 November 4 and 6.
Methods: The various motions of the RHESSI spacecraft which may contribute to
the manifestation of oscillations are studied. The response of each detector in
turn is also investigated. Results: We find that on 2004 November 6 the
observed oscillations correspond to the nutation period of the RHESSI
instrument. These oscillations are also of greatest amplitude for detector 5,
while in the lightcurves of many other detectors the oscillations are small or
undetectable. We also find that the variation in detector pointing is much
larger during this flare than the counterexample of 2004 November 4.
Conclusions: Sufficiently large nutation motions of the RHESSI spacecraft lead
to clearly observable oscillations in count rates, posing a significant hazard
for data analysis. This issue is particularly problematic for detector 5 due to
its design characteristics. Dynamic correction of the RHESSI counts, accounting
for the livetime, data gaps, and the transmission of the bi-grid collimator of
each detector, is required to overcome this issue. These corrections should be
applied to all future oscillation studies.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure
Jumble Java Byte Code to Measure the Effectiveness of Unit Tests
Jumble is a byte code level mutation testing tool for Java which inter-operates with JUnit. It has been designed to operate in an industrial setting with large projects. Heuristics have been included to speed the checking of mutations, for example, noting which test fails for each mutation and running this first in subsequent mutation checks. Significant effort has been put into ensuring that it can test code which uses custom class loading and reflection. This requires careful attention to class path handling and coexistence with foreign class-loaders. Jumble is currently used on a continuous basis within an agile programming environment with approximately 370,000 lines of Java code under source control. This checks out project code every fifteen minutes and runs an incremental set of unit tests and mutation tests for modified classes. Jumble is being made available as open source

Vorapaxar is a first-in-class PAR-1 antagonistic drug based on the ent-himbacine scaffold. Detailed in this article are enantioselective and racemic routes to various novel vorapaxar analogues. Biological testing revealed these compounds to have moderate to excellent potencies against PAR-1 with the most potent analogue demonstrating an IC50 of 27 nM

Self-Administered Computer Therapy for Apraxia of Speech
Background and Purpose
There is currently little evidence on effective interventions for poststroke apraxia of speech. We report outcomes of a trial of self-administered computer therapy for apraxia of speech.
Methods
Effects of speech intervention on naming and repetition of treated and untreated words were compared with those of a visuospatial sham program. The study used a parallel-group, 2-period, crossover design, with participants receiving 2 interventions. Fifty participants with chronic and stable apraxia of speech were randomly allocated to 1 of 2 order conditions: speech-first condition versus sham-first condition. Period 1 design was equivalent to a randomized controlled trial. We report results for this period and profile the effect of the period 2 crossover.
Results
Period 1 results revealed significant improvement in naming and repetition only in the speech-first group. The sham-first group displayed improvement in speech production after speech intervention in period 2. Significant improvement of treated words was found in both naming and repetition, with little generalization to structurally similar and dissimilar untreated words. Speech gains were largely maintained after withdrawal of intervention. There was a significant relationship between treatment dose and response. However, average self-administered dose was modest for both groups. Future software design would benefit from incorporation of social and gaming components to boost motivation.
Conclusions
Single-word production can be improved in chronic apraxia of speech with behavioral intervention. Self-administered computerized therapy is a promising method for delivering high-intensity speech/language rehabilitation
Identification of an active metabolite of PAR-1 antagonist RWJ-58259 and synthesis of analogues to enhance its metabolic stability
The discontinuation of PAR-1 antagonist RWJ-58259 beyond use as a biological probe is most likely due to it's short half-life in vivo. However, retention of significant in vivo activity beyond the point where most of the RWJ-58259 had been consumed implies the generation of an active metabolite. Herein we describe the biological activity of a predicted metabolite of RWJ-58259 and the synthesis of analogues designed to enhance the metabolic stability of RWJ-58259
Effects of crack tip geometry on dislocation emission and cleavage: A possible path to enhanced ductility
We present a systematic study of the effect of crack blunting on subsequent
crack propagation and dislocation emission. We show that the stress intensity
factor required to propagate the crack is increased as the crack is blunted by
up to thirteen atomic layers, but only by a relatively modest amount for a
crack with a sharp 60 corner. The effect of the blunting is far less
than would be expected from a smoothly blunted crack; the sharp corners
preserve the stress concentration, reducing the effect of the blunting.
However, for some material parameters blunting changes the preferred
deformation mode from brittle cleavage to dislocation emission. In such
materials, the absorption of preexisting dislocations by the crack tip can
cause the crack tip to be locally arrested, causing a significant increase in
the microscopic toughness of the crack tip. Continuum plasticity models have
shown that even a moderate increase in the microscopic toughness can lead to an
increase in the macroscopic fracture toughness of the material by several
orders of magnitude. We thus propose an atomic-scale mechanism at the crack
tip, that ultimately may lead to a high fracture toughness in some materials
where a sharp crack would seem to be able to propagate in a brittle manner.

Investigating on the nuclear obscuration in two types of Seyfert 2 galaxies
We build a large sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies (Sy2s) with both optical
spectropolarimetric and X-ray data available, in which 29 Sy2s with the
detection of polarized broad emission line (PBL) and 25 without. We find that
for luminous Sy2s with L_[OIII] > 10^41 erg/s, sources with PBL have smaller
X-ray absorption column density comparing with those without PBL (at 92.3%
confidence level): most of the Sy2s with N_H<10^23.8 cm^-2 show PBL (86%, 12
out 14), while the fraction is much smaller for sources with heavier
obscuration (54%, 15 out 28). The confidence level of the difference in
absorption bounces up to 99.1% while using the "T" ratio (F_2-10keV/F_[O III])
as an indicator. We rule out observation or selection bias as the origin for
the difference. Our results, for the first time with high statistical
confidence, show that, in additional to the nuclei activity, the nuclear
obscuration also plays an important role in the visibility of PBL in Sy2s.
These results can be interpreted in the framework of the unified model. We can
reach these results in the unified model if: a) the absorption column density
is higher at large inclinations and b) the scattering region is obscured at
