The author has identified the following significant results. The Middle Rio Grande project has not yet progressed to the point where mineral exploration sites can be chosen; however, there does appear to be some correlation between the known structure and mineral deposits and the LANDSAT lineament map. A circular feature identified in the southern Magdalena Mountains on LANDSAT-1 imagery agrees well with the location of a newly proposed caldron complex. Several recognized and unrecognized circular features were identified on imagery of the Mogollon-Datil volcanic field. A check of aeromagnetic maps for New Mexico found that the circular features on the LANDSAT imagery showed up as areas of generally high magnetic intensity

In early June, Michael Inglis and David Tabet attended the NASA
sponsored Earth Resources Survey Symposium held in Houston, Texas.
Michael Inglis and David Tabet also attended a meeting in Santa Fe,
New Mexico with representatives of the Federation of Rocky Mountain
States and representatives from various federal, state, and local agencies
to discuss the participation or cooperation of the various agencies in a
computerized 1ANDSAT-2 land-use mapping project of four quadrangles
that is being conducted by the Federation and the New Mexico State Bureau
of Mines and Mineral Resources. Cooperation in this project has come•
from the U. S. Bureau of Land Management, the New Mexico State
Planning Office, Natural Resources Division, awl the City of Santa Fe
Planning Office. Work on the Bureau of Mines state-wide land-use
map, being done by visual methods, has continued and a land-use map
of the state should be completed by the end of the next reporting period.
In the meantime, work has progressed on the application of
LANDSAT data to mineral exploration in the Middle Rio Grande Valley
with the visual study of black and white and color composite LANDSAT-1
images of the area and the making of a lineament map of the area at a
scale of 1:1, 000, 000. This map was compared -with the available
geologic maps and aerial photos of the area; localities of known
mineralization were also noted. Field checking of the lineaments not
found on the published geologic maps was put off awaiting the arrival of
photos from a high altitude mission flown over the area on May 7, 1975.
Problems in processing the film delayed the arrival of the prints and
traasparencies until after the end of August.
A structural study of the Mogollon-Datil volcanic field of
southwestern New Mecdco using LANDSAT imagery was also begun with
special emphasis placed on identifying circular features, possible
cauldro? L complexes or buried stocks that may have acted as sources
for mineralizing f1W.,ds. This work, an extension of the Middle Rio
Grandc project, will hopefully provide a structural framework for
miner;a I exploration in this remote, geologically complex region.
,Ificant Results
The Middle Rio Grande project has not yet progressed to the
point where mineral exploration sites can be chosen; however, there
does appear to be some correlation between the known structure and
mineral deposits and the LANDSAT lineament map. Interest--ugly, a
circular feature identified in the southern Magdalena Mountains on
LANDSAT-1 imagery agrees well with the location of a ne-vAy proposed
cauldron complex according to Charles Chapin (personal communication).
Several recognized and unrecognized circular features have been
identified on LANDSAT-1 imagery of the Mogollon-Datil volcanic
field. A check of the aeromagnetic maps available for that part of
New Mexico found that the circular features on the LANDSAT imagery
showed up as areas of generally high . magnetic intensity.

LANDSAT and Aircraft Imagery
At present, 42 scenes have been received since the initiation
of the contract, providing us with fair to excellent coverage of about
4076 of the State of New Mexico. The area outlined by the revised
coordinate specifications on c,- ,x order has caused us to receive a
number of images, falling within the southern part of the coverage
area, providing coverage of western Texas and Mexico, but not of
New Mexico. It would be preferable to have the present four coordinates
further revised to the following ones:
Contact color prints and transparencies were ordered for the
whole roll of film taken during the high altitude .flight over the Middle
Rio Grande Valley on May 7, 1975. Problems with processing of the
film delayed the arrival of the imagery ordered until Senternber 12,
1975. The color transparencies are of gor4! qua'.ity, but the color
prints are being returned to the EROS Data Center to see if something
can be done about the dark quality of the photos.

Introduction
The objective of the study is to utilize Landsat data as well as supple -

Accomplishments
The statewide land-use map for New Mexico is in its final drafting, stages
and plans for publishing a lull color 1:1,000,000 scale version have been made.

Through the
use of overlays, color tones and hues were delineated such that the resulting
line map indicated various transitions of the vegetation and/or topography.
Reliance on capable interpreters and an understanding of Landsat color products
enabled the map to be compiledn less than l man month of time.

Extensive field checking of Ole preliminary map was completed by mid-
November'. Interpreters identified contacts previously mapped and correlated
rhrr e with the dominant vegetation and terrain. Where necessary, photographs
were taken to supplement field notes.
Five major divisions of land cover are shown and each of these is further
divided into dominant vegetation type, topographic relief, dominant economic
use or other diagnostic conditions. Although these do not directly relate to
the land-use classification established in USES Circular 671, there will be
a table of equivalents provided in the published version.
In late October two symposia were attended, the William T. Pecora
Symposium sponsoredjointly by the American Dining Congress and USGS, and
the ASP-ACSM Fall Convention. These were held in Sioux Falls, South Dalmta
and Phoenix, Arizona, respectively. Both meetings provided direction for
remote sensing activities in mineral exploration.
During the quarter we expanded mineral exploration using Landsat data
from the Rio Grande Valley to the northwestern part of the cztate. The San
Juan Basin and the Grants mineral belt will be examined. Digital d, Ca tapes
will be used as a basis for studying relationships between the gas fields of
the San Juan Basin and surface phenomena, such as soil alteration. Uranium
deposit associations will also be of interest in the examination of surface
alterations. Several techniques will be applied in the analysis, such as
band ratioing and contrast stretching; but all will initially revolve around
digital image enhancement. The scheduling of this activity with facilities
at Los Alamos Scientific Labs is near completion. Literature has been reviewed
and a nurilbcr of contacts made in an effort to benefit from those persons
performing related studies.
A study of the volcanic rocks in the ,Laguna and Bandera lava fields,
Valencia County, New Mexico has been completed. The unit boundaries within
the quaternary basalt flow and cinder cones had not been mapped on the geologic
map for New Mexico (Dane & Bachman, 1965) so a study was performed to examine
the feasibility of using Landsat imagery in their delineation. Several
scenes were examined, the best of which was ;obtained April 7, 1974 (E-1623-
I,	 17155;. An examination of aerial photographs together with Landsat imagery
revealed a striking difference between the older, more weathered Laguna flows
and the younger Bandera flow. The Bandera flow erupted from several local

centers and primary flow features are preserved. Because lava tubes are present
its the Bandera flow, the area is well known as a lunar; analog. Several authors
(Causey, 1971; Hatheway and Herring, 1970) have done detailed mapping of
individual flow units and delineation of source areas within. Similar detailed
mapping in the Laguna flows has not been performed.
Field investigation revealed the occurrence of ponderosa pine on basalt
outcrops. The stands of ponderosa are limited to those areas where basalt	 r.
is exposed or where a very thin veneer of wind-deposited soil is present on
top of the basalt. There is almost a one-to-one relationship of ponderosa 	 j
pine to basalt outcrops. The vegetation on areas where basalt is not out-
cropping consists of scattered pinon and juniper and abundant snakeweed. Flow
boundaries are usually scarps from 3 to 6 meters high. Thee scarps are
composed of blocky boulders of basalt and usually are vegetated with ponderosa
pine.
Most of the Laguna flows are covered with a buff to red colored wind-	 '.
deposited soil. The thickness of the soil ranges from almost nothing to more
than one meter. Where present the soil completely obliterates surface features
on the flows.

In general, the morphology of the Laguna flows is very subdued in com-
parison to the younger Bandera flow. Cinder cones have gentler slopes and 	 1
generally are forested with ponderosa pine. Where the edge of -a flow is a
scarp composed of basalt boulders, ponderosa pine is usually present. Where
outcrops are absent,, no ponderosa is present.
The first analysis of the lava „.	 was by visual inspection of the
Landsat,, Skylab and low altitude aerial photographs. Although there are
striking differences on the photos, these differences could not be consistently
correlated to the individually mapped units of the Bandera flow. Color
composites proved most useful in discriminating flows but only in the more
recent ones. A Bausch and Lomb Zoom Transfer Scope was used during the
interpretation to provide image enlargement and correlation to several of the

younger Bandera 'units previously mapped. Negatives (scale 1:1,000,000) were
made from the black and white bands 5 and 7. These were then used on an
12S closed-circuit TV color enhancing unit to enhance densities of the flow
units. In addition, a 3-dimensional viewer was employed in the analysis.

In neither case, however, was a satisfactory discrimination of the Bandera
fields noted, nor was a correlation with existing mapped units observed.
Within the Laguna field there was no discrimination between the surface of the
flow and the surrounding terrain. It is :felt that delineation of lava fields
within New Mexico cannot be made using the visrtnl interpretation or visually
enhanced photographic methods at the scale of the bulk processed imagery using
the present spectral bands.

Significant Results
The statewide land-use map for New Mexico has been compiled_, field
checked and is in final stages of drafting for publication. Progress is
being made in the mineral exploration studies of the Middle Rio Grande, San
Juan Basin and the Grants Mineral Belt. Significant results from these
activities are expected.
Publications and Talks
No papers have been published during this reporting period although
several talks have been given to persons in the New Mexico State Planning
Office, New Mexico Bureau of Mines and the University of New Mexico.
Landsat and Aircraft Imagery
A further revision of coordinate specifications requested during the last

coverage with color prints using spring season dates as near to one another
as possible. High altitude aerial coverage of the Socorro area previously
returned for reproduction problems has been received.

A cost effective technique is considered for measuring and monitoring surface area fluctuations in lake size in southeastern New Mexico over a two year period. The lakes are shallow, and therefore a small volume increase results in a noticeable increase in surface area on the LANDSAT imagery. Lake sizes are measured on an I(2)S Digicol viewer. Water from potash mining operations is being pumped into some of these lakes and the input volume is documented. I. Obiectives:
The objective of the study is to utilize LANDSAT data as well as
supplementary photos and maps in conjunction with field investigation to
provide information that will be useful in evaluating, developing and manag-
ing the natural resources of New Mexico. Emphasis will be placed on mineral
resources, geologic structure, and landform surveys and on land-use survey
and mapping.
II. Accomplishments:
During this reporting period, work has progressed in two areas: hydrologic
surveying and land-use mapping. A land-use map of the state of New Mexico has
been initiated and should be completed during the next reporting period. Cate-
gories used on the map were derived from a combination of the draft version of
U.S.G.S. Circular 671, the Rocky Mountain Federation of States preliminary

land-use classification, and Land-use classifications under consideration by
the Land Use Advisory Council to the New Mexico Legislature.
The classification categories (Table 1) are detectable on LANDSAT images,
but in some instances collateral information must be used. This includes
checking of high- and low-altitude aircraft imagery as well as ground truth.
Other levels can be broken doom from this classification system and the system
can be used for other than remote sensing interpretation.
A main criticism of the classification in Table 1 concerns the under-
ground extraction category. It was included so that gas and oil fields which
can be discriminated on LANDSAT images as a network of dots could be mapped.
However, other underground mining areas with no distinctive surface pattern
would be difficult to recognize.
The land-use map of New Mexico will be published at a scale of 1:1,000,000
and may be used in conjunction with the LANDSAT mosaic of the state. Inter-
pretalion of color composites of the state is in progress. Most composites
were obtained from the Goddard Space Flight Center and missing images from the
EROS Data Center. Unfortunately, the color balance on those images from
Goddard and EROS differs markedly. Differences in high mountain vegetation is
not as easily distinguished on EROS color composites and this may present a
problem.
LANDSAT imagery is also being used in an adjunct project by Mike E.
White entitled "Volumetric Measurements and Seasonal Variation of Selected
New Mexico Lakes.',' The object of this study is to monitor surface water
resources using band 7 multi-spectral scanner imagery from the LANDSAT-1
satellite. Four seasonal maps of New Mexico taken in 1973 wiil indicate
variations of surface water throughout the state. These maps will also serve
as a base against which future seasonal'maps can be compared and changes
detected.
The capacity of the seasonal maps to be used for volumetric lake moni-
toring is also being investigated. Monthly coverage by LANDSAT-1 imagery for
six major New Mexico lakes will be used to measure surface area changes.
Images of the lakes will be enlarged to different scales in order to ascer-
tain which is most accurate. Each lake has a different hypsographic and
morphometric characteristic and has a detailed capacity table, against which
to check measurements.

4III. Sinnificant Results:
An associated project generated as a result of the T.ANDSAT study is in
progress. The project- is concerned with developing a cost-effective technique
of measuring and monitoring surface area fluctuations in lake size in south-
eastern New Mexico over a two-year period. The lakes are shallow, and there-
fore a small volume increase results in a noticeable increase in surface area
on the LANDSAT imagery. Before temporal LANDSAT images were examined, hydro-
logists working in the area had assumed that there was little fluctuation in
lake size. Lake sizes are now being quantitatively measured on an I 2S Digicol
Viewer.
The topography of the area is known, and therefore lake volumes can be.
calculated from surface area measurements. Water from potash mining operations
is being pumped into some of these lakes and the input volume is documented.
Using water input and surface contour as well as direct lake level measurements
as ground truth as well as the LANTDSAT images, calculations may be possible
regarding how much additional industrial water can be added to these lakes
without the occurrence of saline seepage into the major river system.
LANDSAT and Aircraft Images
A total of 13 scenes have been received since the initie.tion'of • he contract
providing good to excellent coverage of almost 20% of the state of New Mexico.
Those scenes received have their center points located to the south of those
taken by LAN=.T-1. Therefore, areas on the periphery of LANDSAT-1 images
occur in a more favorable position on LANDSAT-2 images. The study has progressed
in the previous T months using both LANDSAT-1 and -2 scenes.

requested and approved. The flight area includes the city of Socorro and the
Magdalet4't Mountains and will be used in conjunction with the LANDSAT material
for land-use determination and the investigation of mineral resources.
We have been notified by the Aircraft Project Manager, D. W. Whittle,
that the test site (297-Rio Grande River Watershed) has been flown. To date,
no microfilm strip of the photography has been received.
In the process of working on the land-use map of New Mexico, it was found
that the latitude and longitude tick marks on the images were totally unreliable..
The tick marks did not coincide with latitude and longitude on state maps of

New Mexico. In addition, if 2 scenes from different dates were overlaid and
topographic features matched, latitude and longitude marks did not coincide.
After this experience, tick marks were ignored and topographic features on images
and maps matched when transferring land-use features.
Reports written by other LANDSAT investigators have been studied. In many
cases when an image or portion of an image was included iu a report, no image
identification number was given. Therefore, there was no way to order a dupli-
cate image without- contacting one of the investigators. It is recommended that,
when images are used in progress and final reports, the image identification
numbers be included to facilitate image ordering by interested parties.
