    ENDOPHYTES FROM THE AQUATIC PLANT NELUMBO NUCIFERA: DIVERSITY PROFILE AND ACTIVITY CHARACTERIZATION

    Objective: Endophytes represent a niche habitat for the study of novel bio-and chemo diversity. Nelumbo nucifera is an aquatic plant that has not been characterized for endophyte diversity. This study was undertaken with the objective of isolating endophytes from submerged and aerial part of N. nucifera, study the diversity profile of the isolated endophytes and their antimicrobial, antioxidant, and siderophore production capacity.Methods: Endophytes were isolated from aerial and submerged parts of N. nucifera on different media (Starch Casein Nitrate, Glucose Yeast Extract, Nutrient and Potato Dextrose agar). These were further characterized for morphology (colony characteristics, Gram reaction), physiological characteristics (carbon, nitrogen utilization) and activity (antimicrobial, antioxidant, siderophore production). After dereplication, twelve isolates were studied further.Results: All endophyte isolates were Gram-positive bacteria, and one was a fungus. Isolate L-300 showed the highest antioxidant capacity (238 AAE g FW-1) and L-201 least (10 AAE g FW-1. Antimicrobial activity was exhibited against bacteria and fungal targets, with 50% endophytes active against both bacteria and fungi. Isolates L-003 and L-207 exhibited activity against Gram-negative clinical isolates as also fungi. Siderophore production was shown by 58% isolates with L-208 showing maximum activity.Conclusion: This is the first report on profiling of endophytes from N. nucifera. Results show that aquatic plants harbor diverse microbial population. Many promising isolates (such as L-003, L-211, L-214 and L-300) have been characterized in this study and results obtained of antioxidant, antimicrobial and siderophore production capacity demonstrate further utility in polypharmacological studies for identifying compounds of pharmaceutical and other industrial interest.Â

    Evaluación de las propiedades del cajaro (Phractocephalus hemiliopterus) como potencial para la obtención de surimi y productos derivados

    Objetivo. Determinar el uso potencial de carne de Cajaro (Phractocephalus hemiliopterus), para la obtención de surimi y productos derivados. Materiales y métodos. Filetes de Cajaro fueron troceados y lixiviados con agua en relación 1:3, formando pasta base surimi con la cual se preparó kamaboko, sometiendo la pasta moldeada a vapor (60oC) durante 15 min; y chikuwa donde la pasta en forma de rollo fue cocida a 80oC por 10 min. Se determinó la proteína total por método Kjeldahl, la capacidad de retención de agua (CRA) y el análisis de perfil de textura (TPA). El contenido de humedad se determinó por método AOAC (985.14) y se evaluó la calidad de la proteína miofibrilar por electroforesis SDS-page. Resultados. El Cajaro presentó un contenido proteico de 17.90±0.79% b.h.; porcentaje de humedad de 81.65±2.2% b.h. y CRA de 66.25±3.53% b.h. Los productos derivados presentaron 18.66±1.35% b.h., de proteína total equivalente a la proteína miofibrilar, influyendo en la gelificación por aumento de la CRA con respecto al surimi. El TPA incrementó (á=0.05) en la masticabilidad de la pasta base (51.04 N.s) con respecto al kamaboko (480.80 N.s), generando características cohesivas a los productos derivados, frente a características adhesivas de la pasta base. En la electroforesis se evidenció que la calidad de la miosina en productos derivados se conservó después de congelados, mientras que en filete y pasta base se deterioró. Conclusiones. La calidad de la proteína miofibrilar de Cajaro evidencia el potencial tecnológico que tiene esta especie del Amazonas, convirtiéndose en una oportunidad de negocio para obtención de productos tipo surimi de alto valor nutricional con calidad exportable

    N-Bromosuccinimide reacts with aromatic aldehydes in the solid state to yield exclusively nuclear brominated products while a similar reaction in the solution phase produces a number of products under varied conditions. The reactivity and regioselectivity have been studied in terms of the energies of HOMO, HOMO–LUMO difference, reaction free energy, reaction conditions and crystal packing. Single crystal X-ray structural analysis of 3,4-dihydroxybenzaldehyde has been carried out. Crystal packing energies of some of the reactive and unreactive benzaldehydes indicate the importance of molecular bromine diffusion in the solid state

    In the title compound, C29H22Br2O3, the dihedral angles between the mean planes of the benzene rings within each biphenyl group are 26.7 (8) and 30.9 (8)°. The mean planes of the terminal and inner benzene rings of the biphenyl groups bonded through a propan-1-one group in the V-shaped mol­ecule are oriented at angles of 66.1 (7) and 60.0 (8)°, respectively. The two Br atoms are opposite the propen-1-one group. Weak inter­molecular C—H⋯O and C—H⋯π inter­actions are observed in the crystal structure
