O ar do tempo : a moda "à francesa"
The time air was French and blew over Portugal new ideas, tastes and customs that threatened the structures of the Ancient Regime and therefore should be excised. One of the targets of attentions was the fashion in the French view, seen as transgressing the established order, and if female generating behaviors, that the state, the church and moralists believed to compromise the social and family balance grounded on the submission of women.
Elemental characterization of the airborne pollen surface using Electron Probe Microanalysis (EPMA)
Recent worldwide increase in pollinoses has been attributed to the synergy between pollen and pollutants. We used EPMA for the elemental characterization
of the airborne pollen surface in order to find out what occurs to the wall of pollen grains when they are together with other atmospheric pollutants. Analyses
were performed both to airborne pollen and to pollen that was collected from Acer spp., Platanus spp. and Pinus spp. trees. Airborne samples were assembled
using a Hirst-type volumetric spore sampler set in the coastal city of Porto, Portugal. Airborne pollen samples showed major elemental differences when
compared to the control pollen sample of the same species, namely in the amounts of Cl, Na and Mg, which very significantly increased on airborne samples,
revealing an important influence of the ocean. Mineral dust also contributed to modify the pollen surface, by increasing Si contents on Acer spp. and Platanus
spp. airborne pollen. Our results revealed consistent positive effects of the relative humidity and the precipitation in the increase of Cl, Na and Mg relative
amounts on the pollen surface. This study shows that pollen grains have the ability to adsorb and/or absorb other materials, which may contribute to enhance
pollen's harmful effects on people's health

Differential Quercus spp pollen-particulate matter interaction is dependent on geographical areas
Particulate matter (PM) and pollen interaction, either airborne or at the respiratory mucosa needs further clarification, as allergic reaction intensification can be related to the PM physical characteristics and toxicity. This study aimed to investigate the physical-chemical properties of PM that can adhere to the pollen wall during its transport or inhalation, using Quercus spp. as a model, in three Portuguese cities with different geographical locations, meteorological influence and urbanization levels. Possible sources were evaluated through air masses trajectory analysis using the HYSPLIT model and correlation with meteorological factors. The sampling was performed using a 7-days Hirst-type volumetric sampler, and the pollen grains were observed using a Field Emission Electron Probe Microanalyser for PM analysis. A secondary electron image of each pollen grain was taken, to determine the adhered particles characteristics and energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) spectra were obtained for individual particles. A total of 484 pollen grains was observed, with 7683 particles counted and 1914 EDS spectra analyzed. The particle's equivalent diameter ranged from 0.3-16 μm, with most having a diameter < 3 μm. For the three cities, there were significant differences in the number of particles per pollen and the % area occupied by the particles. Particles adhered were mainly Si-rich, but variations in other dominant groups were observed. For Évora and Guarda, Ca-rich, SO-rich were second and third more representative, while Porto were Organic and Cl-rich. Metals&Oxides were found in all cities with the highest number in Porto. P-rich particles were only found in Évora. Sea salt particles were observed in Évora, coincide with air mass trajectories possible carrying them from the Mediterranean Sea. In conclusion, the PM physical characteristics are similar between the studied cities, however, the dominant chemical composition is different, certainly impacting the exposome influence and pollen-allergy intensification towards the same pollen type and concentration
Forecasting ARIMA models for atmospheric vineyard pathogens in Galicia and Northern Portugal: Botrytis cinerea spores
Botrytis cinerea is the cause of the most common disease in the Galician and Portuguese vineyards. Knowledge of the spore levels in the atmosphere of vineyards is a tool for forecasting models of the concentration of spores in order to adjust the phytosanitary treatments to real risk infection periods. The presented study was conducted in two vineyards, one located in Cenlle (Spain) and other in Amares (Portugal), from 2005-2007. A volumetric trap, model Lanzoni VPPS-2000, was used for the aerobiological study. Phenological observations were conducted on 20 vines of three grape varieties in Cenlle (Treixadura, Godello and Loureira) and in Amares (Trajadura, Loureiro and Pedernã), by using the BBCH scale. The highest total spore concentrations during the grapevine cycle were recorded in 2007 in both locations (Cenlle:16,145 spores; Amares:1,858 spores), and the lowest, in 2005 in Cenlle (1,700 spores) and in Amares (800 spores) in 2006. In Cenlle, the best adjusted model was an ARIMA (0,2,2), including the relative humidity four days earlier, while in Amares there was an ARIMA (1,2,3), considering the relative humidity three days earlier and rainfall two days earlier. The t-test showed no significant difference between observed and predicted data by the model. The study was partially supported by the University of Vigo (Bolsas de Estadías en centros de Investigación)S

In vitro exposure of acer negundo pollen to atmospheric levels of SO2 and NO2: effects on allergenicity and germination
In the last years, a rising trend of pollen allergies in urban areas
has been attributed to atmospheric pollution. In this work, we investigated the
effects of SO2 and NO2 on the protein content, allergenicity, and germination
rate of Acer negundo pollen. A novel environmental chamber was assembled to
exposure pollen samples with SO2 or NO2 at two different levels: just below
and two times the atmospheric hour-limit value acceptable for human health
protection in Europe. Results showed that protein content was lower in SO2-
exposed pollen samples and slightly higher in NO2-exposed pollen compared
to the control sample. No different polypeptide profiles were revealed by SDSPAGE
between exposed and nonexposed pollen, but the immunodetection
assays indicated higher IgE recognition by all sera of sensitized patients to Acer
negundo pollen extracts in all exposed samples in comparison to the
nonexposed samples. A decrease in the germination rate of exposed in
contrast to nonexposed pollen was verified, which was more pronounced for NO2-exposed samples. Our results indicated that in
urban areas, concentrations of SO2 and NO2 below the limits established for human protection can indirectly aggravate pollen
allergy on predisposed individuals and affect plant reproduction
