Mawenzhangia thamnobryoides (Bryophyta, Lembophyllaceae), a new moss genus and species from the Shangri-la region of Yunnan Province, China

    Get PDF
Mawenzhangia thamnobryoides gen. et sp. nov. (Bryophyta, Lembophyllaceae) is described based on collections from Yunnan, China. It is known from the Niru River watershed and grows on boulders just above the high water zone but can also be seasonally inundated. According to ITS sequences it is closely related to Nogopterium gracile (Pterogonium g.), but can be distinguished by the loosely patent and elliptic vs. imbricate and ovate leaves; much longer, single costa; thinner-walled and less strongly prorate laminal cells; and much smaller group of alar cells. Mawenzhangia thamnobryoides is illustrated in line drawings and an identification key to Chinese genera of the Lembophyllaceae is provided.Peer reviewe

A Caribbean epiphyte community preserved in Miocene Dominican amber

    Get PDF
Fossil tree resins preserve a wide range of animals, plants, fungi and microorganisms in microscopic fidelity. Fossil organisms preserved in an individual piece of amber lived at the same time in Earth history and mostly even in the same habitat, but they were not necessarily parts of the same interacting community. Here, we report on an in situ preserved corticolous community from a piece of Miocene Dominican amber which is composed of a lichen, a moss and three species of leafy liverworts. The lichen is assigned to the extant genus Phyllopsora (Ramalinaceae, Lecanoromycetes) and is described as P. magna Kaasalainen, Rikkinen & A. R. Schmidt sp. nov. The moss, Aptychellites fossilis Schaf.-Verw., Hedenas, Ignatov & Heinrichs gen. & sp. nov., closely resembles the extant genus Aptychella of the family Pylaisiadelphaceae. The three leafy liverworts comprise the extinct Lejeuneaceae species Cheilolejeunea antiqua (Grolle) Ye & Zhu, 2010 and Lejeunea miocenica Heinrichs, Schaf.-Verw., M. A. M. Renner & G. E. Lee sp. nov. and the extinct Radulaceae species Radula intecta M. A. M. Renner, Schaf.-Verw. & Heinrichs sp. nov. The presence of five associated extinct cryptogam species, four of which belong to extant genera, further substantiates the notion of a stasis in morphotype diversity, but a certain turnover of species, in the Caribbean since the early Miocene.Peer reviewe

General Game Playing B-to-B Price Negotiations

    Get PDF
This papers discusses the scientific and practical perspectives of using general game playing in business-to-business price negotiations as a part of Procurement 4.0 revolution. The status quo of digital price negotiations software, which emerged from intuitive solutions to business goals and refereed to as electronic auctions in industry, is summarized in scientific context. Description of such aspects as auctioneers’ interventions, asymmetry among players and time-depended features reveals the nature of nowadays electronic auctions to be rather termed as price games. This paper strongly suggests general game playing as the crucial technology for automation of human rule setting in those games. Game theory, genetic programming, experimental economics and AI human player simulation are also discussed as satellite topics. SIDL-type game descriptions languages and their formal game theoretic foundations are presented

Miscellaneous notes on the genus Forsstroemia in Russia (Neckeraceae, Bryophyta)

Molecular phylogenetic analysis supports the position on the species known as Neckera konoi in the genus Forsstroemia, therefore it is transferred to this genus with a new combination, F. konoi (Broth.) Enroth, Fedosov & Ignatov. Molecular data also confirm the position of F. stricta Laz. described from the Russian Far East in F. producta, a pantropical species. Forstroemia neckeroides is reported from Russia, Primorsky Territory, for the first time.Peer reviewe

On the phylogenetic position of the genus Claopodium: a revival of a 19th century idea

    Get PDF
Molecular phylogenetic analysis of nuclear ITS and plastid rps4–trnS found species of the genus Claopodium in the clade formed by species of Brachytheciaceae and Meteoriaceae, including Trachypodaceae. Claopodium is resolved as sister to Brachytheciaceae, thus we suggest its placement in this family, despite it will be the only taxon of the family with pluripapillose laminal cells. The taxonomic value of the papillose leaf cells in pleurocarpous mosses is discussed.</p

Survival benefit of tamoxifen in male breast cancer : prospective cohort analysis

    Get PDF
Background Due to the lack of prospective data, current treatment of male breast cancer (MBC) is based on information obtained from retrospective analysis or by extrapolation from studies on female patients. In this prospectively enrolled cohort study, we retrospectively examined the survival effect of tamoxifen in MBC patients. Methods In this prospectively enrolled cohort study, 448 patients with MBC were treated between May 2009 and June 2018. The primary endpoint was disease-free survival (DFS). Results Between May 2009 and June 2018, 448 men with breast cancer were identified, with a median age at diagnosis of 69 years (range 27–96 years). The median follow-up was 39 months (range 3–89 months). Most tumours were larger than 20 mm; invasive ductal carcinoma was of no special histological type and with an intermediate grade of differentiation. Almost half of the men were diagnosed with positive axillary lymph nodes (43.5%). Hormone receptor (HR) positivity was observed in 98.4% of the patients. Notably, DFS among men who did not receive tamoxifen was significantly reduced as compared with those who underwent tamoxifen therapy (P = 0.002). The recurrence rate and mortality in the group of patients without and with tamoxifen treatment were 18.2% and 11.2%, respectively. The most common localisation of metastases was the bone. After adjustment for prognostic factors, we found that tamoxifen was found to reduce the recurrence rate by 68% (hazard ratio HR = 0.32; 95% confidence interval, CI: 0.14–0.74). Conclusions Tamoxifen treatment was associated with improved DFS for MBC patients.Projekt DEAL 202

Micropropagation and optimisation of in vitro production of the rare and threatened moss Entosthodon pulchellus (Funariaceae)

The establishment of axenic cultures and the propagation of the rare moss Entosthodon pulchellus (H. Philip.) Brugués (Funariaceae), as well as the optimisation of its ex situ growth conditions and rapid biomass production were the goals of this study. The results obtained also provide insights into the developmental biology of this moss in in vitro conditions, particularly regarding basal media contents with or without supplements of selected plant growth regulators or sugars, i.e. its nutritional needs. The procedure for establishing axenic cultures of this rare and threatened moss species is described. The optimisation protocol of the growth and production conditions is elaborated. The spore germinability of dried herbarium samples remained rather high in the tested laboratory conditions. Suitability tests on different media types showed KNOP basal media to be the best fit for the rapid biomass production of both secondary protonemata and leafy gametophores, without the addition of sugars or plant growth regulators. However, sugar, namely sucrose, induced rapid and massive protonemal development and can be used when this developmental stage is needed

    Coulomb dissociation of 20,21N

Neutron-rich light nuclei and their reactions play an important role in the creation of chemical elements. Here, data from a Coulomb dissociation experiment on N20,21 are reported. Relativistic N20,21 ions impinged on a lead target and the Coulomb dissociation cross section was determined in a kinematically complete experiment. Using the detailed balance theorem, the N19(n,Îł)N20 and N20(n,Îł)N21 excitation functions and thermonuclear reaction rates have been determined. The N19(n,Îł)N20 rate is up to a factor of 5 higher at T<1GK with respect to previous theoretical calculations, leading to a 10% decrease in the predicted fluorine abundance
