    The effects of localized damping on structural response

    The effect of localized structural damping on the excitability of higher order normal modes of the large space telescope was investigated. A preprocessor computer program was developed to incorporate Voigt structural joint damping models in a NASTRAN finite-element dynamic model. A postprocessor computer program was developed to select critical modes for low-frequency attitude control problems and for higher frequency fine-stabilization problems. The mode selection is accomplished by ranking the flexible modes based on coefficients for rate gyro, position gyro, and optical sensors, and on image-plane motions due to sinusoidal or random power spectral density force and torque inputs

    Fuels treatment and wildfire effects on runoff from Sierra Nevada mixed-conifer forests

    We applied an eco-hydrologic model (Regional Hydro-Ecologic Simulation System [RHESSys]), constrained with spatially distributed field measurements, to assess the impacts of forest-fuel treatments and wildfire on hydrologic fluxes in two Sierra Nevada firesheds. Strategically placed fuels treatments were implemented during 2011–2012 in the upper American River in the central Sierra Nevada (43 km2) and in the upper Fresno River in the southern Sierra Nevada (24 km2). This study used the measured vegetation changes from mechanical treatments and modelled vegetation change from wildfire to determine impacts on the water balance. The well-constrained headwater model was transferred to larger catchments based on geologic and hydrologic similarities. Fuels treatments covered 18% of the American and 29% of the Lewis catchment. Averaged over the entire catchment, treatments in the wetter central Sierra Nevada resulted in a relatively light vegetation decrease (8%), leading to a 12% runoff increase, averaged over wet and dry years. Wildfire with and without forest treatments reduced vegetation by 38% and 50% and increased runoff by 55% and 67%, respectively. Treatments in the drier southern Sierra Nevada also reduced the spatially averaged vegetation by 8%, but the runoff response was limited to an increase of less than 3% compared with no treatment. Wildfire following treatments reduced vegetation by 40%, increasing runoff by 13%. Changes to catchment-scale water-balance simulations were more sensitive to canopy cover than to leaf area index, indicating that the pattern as well as amount of vegetation treatment is important to hydrologic response

    Keluarga memiliki peran yang begitu penting bagi lansia yang menderita hipertensi khususnya dalam pemberian diet. Peran tersebut antara lain membimbing dan memecahkan masalah sehingga pemberian diet pada lansia dengan hipertensi dapat dikelola dengan baik oleh keluarga. Adapun penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui faktor-faktor yang berhubungan perilaku keluarga dalam pemberian diet hipertensi pada lansia. Faktor-faktornya adalah pengetahuan, sikap, umur, jenis kelamin, pendidikan, ketersediaan fasilitas kesehatan, dan tenaga kesehatan. Penelitian ini bersifat deskriptif analisis kuantitatif dengan menggunakan cross sectional. Jumlah sampel dalam penelitian ini sebanyak 30 responden. Pengambilan sampel menggunakan total sampling. Instrumen yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah dengan wawancara menggunakan kuesioner. Data dianalisis dengan menggunakan analisis univariat dan analisis bivariat. Hasil analisis bivariat menunjukkan bahwa (a) ada hubungan antara pengetahuan dengan perilaku keluarga dalam pemberian diet hipertensi pada lansia ; (b) ada hubungan antara sikap dengan perilaku keluarga dalam pemberian diet hipertensi pada lansia ; (c) ada hubungan antara umur dengan perilaku keluarga dalam pemberian diet hipertensi pada lansia; (d) tidak ada hubungan antara jenis kelamin dengan perilaku keluarga dalam pemberian diet hipertensi pada lansia; (e) tidak ada hubungan antara pendidikan dengan perilaku keluarga dalam pemberian diet hipertensi pada lansia; (f) tidak ada hubungan antara ketersediaan fasilitas kesehatan dengan perilaku keluarga dalam pemberian diet hipertensi pada lansia; (g) tidak ada hubungan antara tenaga kesehatan dengan perilaku keluarga dalam pemberian diet hipertensi pada lansia. Keluarga perlu menyadari tentang pentingnya perannya dalam menjaga atau memantau nutrisi yang diberikan pada lansia dengan hipertensi. Keluarga dan penderita hipertensi harus bekerja sama agar penderita hipertensi patuh menjalani diet rendah garam agar tekanan darah penderita hipertensi dapat terkontrol dengan baik. Pada penelitian ini bahwa tingkat Pengaruh Pendidikan Kesehatan terhadap Pengetahuan Lansia di Posyandu Lansia Kelurahan Manisrenggo sebelum kita melakukan penyuluhan pada lansia dari 23 responden memiliki kategori cukup atau 43% dari 23 responden yaitu 10 responden. Namun, setelah kita melakukan penyuluhan tentang pengaruh pendidikan kesehatan terhadap pengetahuan lansia mengalami kenaikan dari 43% kategori cukup menjadi 52% memiliki kategori baik yaitu 12 orang

    Temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering fine structure in equiatomic CuAu

    The temperature dependence of the diffuse scattering fine structure from disordered equiatomic CuAu was studied using {\it in situ} x-ray scattering. In contrast to Cu3_3Au the diffuse peak splitting in CuAu was found to be relatively insensitive to temperature. Consequently, no evidence for a divergence of the antiphase length-scale at the transition temperature was found. At all temperatures studied the peak splitting is smaller than the value corresponding to the CuAuII modulated phase. An extended Ginzburg-Landau approach is used to explain the temperature dependence of the diffuse peak profiles in the ordering and modulation directions.     Evolution of the Seasonal Surface Mixed Layer of the Ross Sea, Antarctica, Observed With Autonomous Profiling Floats

    Oceanographic conditions on the continental shelf of the Ross Sea, Antarctica, affect sea ice production, Antarctic Bottom Water formation, mass loss from the Ross Ice Shelf, and ecosystems. Since ship access to the Ross Sea is restricted by sea ice in winter, most upper ocean measurements have been acquired in summer. We report the first multiyear time series of temperature and salinity throughout the water column, obtained with autonomous profiling floats. Seven Apex floats were deployed in 2013 on the midcontinental shelf, and six Air‐Launched Autonomous Micro Observer floats were deployed in late 2016, mostly near the ice shelf front. Between profiles, most floats were parked on the seabed to minimize lateral motion. Surface mixed layer temperatures, salinities, and depths, in winter were −1.8 °C, 34.34, and 250–500 m, respectively. Freshwater from sea ice melt in early December formed a shallow (20 m) surface mixed layer, which deepened to 50–80 m and usually warmed to above −0.5 °C by late January. Upper‐ocean freshening continued throughout the summer, especially in the eastern Ross Sea and along the ice shelf front. This freshening requires substantial lateral advection that is dominated by inflow from melting of sea ice and ice shelves in the Amundsen Sea and by inputs from the Ross Ice Shelf. Changes in upper‐ocean freshwater and heat content along the ice shelf front in summer affect cross‐ice front advection, ice shelf melting, and calving processes that determine the rate of mass loss from the grounded Antarctic Ice Sheet in this sector

    Kruppel-like factor 4 signals through microRNA-206 to promote tumor initiation and cell survival

    Tumor cell heterogeneity poses a major hurdle in the treatment of cancer. Mammary cancer stem-like cells (MaCSCs), or tumor-initiating cells, are highly tumorigenic sub-populations that have the potential to self-renew and to differentiate. These cells are clinically important, as they display therapeutic resistance and may contribute to treatment failure and recurrence, but the signaling axes relevant to the tumorigenic phenotype are poorly defined. The zinc-finger transcription factor Kruppel-like factor 4 (KLF4) is a pluripotency mediator that is enriched in MaCSCs. KLF4 promotes RAS-extracellular signal-regulated kinase pathway activity and tumor cell survival in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) cells. In this study, we found that both KLF4and a downstream effector, microRNA-206 (miR-206), are selectively enriched in the MaCSC fractions of cultured human TNBC cell lines, as well as in the aldehyde dehydrogenase-high MaCSC sub-population of cells derived from xenografted human mammary carcinomas. The suppression of endogenous KLF4 or miR-206 activities abrogated cell survival and in vivo tumor initiation, despite having only subtle effects on MaCSC abundance. Using a combinatorial approach that included in silico as well as loss- and gain-of-function in vitro assays, we identified miR-206-mediated repression of the pro-apoptotic molecules programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4) and connexin 43 (CX43/GJA1). Depletion of either of these two miR-206-regulated transcripts promoted resistance to anoikis, a prominent feature of CSCs, but did not consistently alter MaCSC abundance. Consistent with increased levels of miR-206 in MaCSCs, the expression of both PDCD4 and CX43 was suppressed in these cells relative to control cells. These results identify miR-206 as an effector of KLF4-mediated prosurvival signaling in MaCSCs through repression of PDCD4 and CX43. Consequently, our study suggests that a pluripotency factor exerts prosurvival signaling in MaCSCs, and that antagonism of KLF4-miR-206 signaling may selectively target the MaCSC niche in TNBC

    Influence of permanent night work on the circadian rhythm of blood pressure

    Abstract. Night workers exercise their labours activities and rest in contrary schedules to the chronobiological standards. This inversion leads the body to several adaptations, including changes in the circadian rhythm of blood pressure (BP). Objectives: To evaluate the BP in individuals who perform work at night, in order to objectively detail the BP circadian rhythm adaptations infixed night workers. Methods: A cross-sectional study enrolling 23 fixed night workers, both genders, was performed, with 24h BP measured with ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) during a normal working day. Risk factors, anthropometric and lifestyle information were collected using a standard questionnaire. Results: Ambulatory BP demonstrated a pattern of adaptation to the sleep/activity cycle in all participants. BP dropped during the sleeping period (mean drop: -11.35±6.85) and was higher during the awakening period, reaching the highest results and greater BP variability during the working period. The chronobiological adaptation of the 24h BP was not dependent on sociodemographic or clinical characteristics. In addition, age, male gender, obesity, and those working less time were associated with higher BP mean values.
