Spiritism and Umbanda in Brazil: the Indian as a Figure of Worship and the Dilution of Identity Boundaries

Brazilian Umbanda is a religion supported by trance and worship of ancestors. This religion is very close to Spirits’, codified by Allan Kardec, the magical past and with the worship of ancestors of African origin. In contrast, the Spiritism of French origin, imported by Brazil in the second half of the 19th century, developed an identity close to literacy and science, sensitizing the sociocultural elite. With those characteristics, Spiritism tried to separate from Umbanda as Umbanda tried to get closer to Spiritism. This article  discusses the figure of worship ‘the Brazilian Indian’ in Umbanda and his presence in Spiritism itself that contradict effort of his spokespersons to remove him from everything that could resemble Afro-Brazilian religions

The Religious Project of “Padrinho Laudelino” in Southern Brazil in the First Half of the 20th Century: Between Saint Francis of Assisi and Afro-Indigenous Ancestry

This text is about a religious project carried out in the first half of the 20th century by an African descendant man, an official of the Brazilian Navy, in Porto Alegre, capital of the state of Rio Grande do Sul. Laudelino founded a place of worship, with a diversified pantheon, which ranged from former African enslaved blacks and Brazilian Indians to Catholic bishops. It is the “Spiritist Shelter Francis of Assisi”. The experience is discussed here as being inherent to the multi-differentiated nature of Umbanda: a religion in which both a hierarchical centralization and a rigid doctrinal explicitness are absent. Therefore, being aware of the cultual and doctrinal diversity is crucial to understand Umbanda in its historicity. In this perspective, this text discusses “Padrinho Laudelino’s” experience and his effort to create an Umbanda and a self-image that are able to resemble his horizon of understanding of religion: Catholicism. Procura-se analisar com este artigo, os diversificados rituais católicos de morte na cidade de Florianópolis (SC), no decorrer do século XX, por meio de variadas fontes escritas, imagéticas e orais. The article discusses the construction biographical around Fernando do Ó and its dissemination within the Brazilian Spiritism. In this sense, we mean the biographical genre as a recurring strategy for the dissemination of literacy practices and build memories around members who participated in the organization of spiritism in Brazil.Este artigo discute a construção biográfica em torno de Fernando do Ó e sua disseminação no âmbito do espiritismo brasileiro. Nesse sentido, inferimos o gênero biográfico como uma estratégia recorrente de divulgação de práticas letradas e a construção de memórias em torno de membros que participaram da organização do espiritismo no Brasil.

EDIFICANDO UM CONGÁ PARA A MEMÓRIA JOINVILENSE: AS RELIGIÕES MEDIÚNICAS PRESENTES NA GESTÃO DA MEMÓRIA DE UMA CIDADE

Este texto expõe problematizações acerca da (in)visibilidade da umbanda em Joinville e da pluralidade religiosa presente na cidade. A partir da segunda metade do século XX sobressai em Joinville uma preocupação de preservar o passado da cidade por meio da guarda de documentos e das edificação de espaços de guarda da memória da cidade. No desejo de preservar o passado há uma operação de seletividade em movimento e em meio a esse investimento residem ações que conjugam, somam e subtraem aquilo que deve e merece ser guardado. Assim, ao investigarmos a composição e a dinâmica do campo religioso em Joinville nos deparamos com um exercício de enquadramento e cerceamento das religiões mediúnicas residindo em meio as preocupações de preservação da memória de uma cidade que celebra seu pioneirismo germânico.This paper exposes problematizations about the ( in) visibility of Umbanda in Joinville and religious plurality in this city . From the second half of the twentieth century stands in Joinville a concern to preserve the city's past, keeping the documents, and the building guard spaces for the city's memory. The desire to preserve the past, there is a movement in selectivity operation and in the midst of this investment lie actions combine , add and subtract what should and deserves to be saved. Thus, to investigate the composition and dynamics of the religious field in Joinville we face an exercise framework and curtailment of mediumistic religions residing amid the memory preservation concerns of a city that celebrates its German pioneer
