    Allelopathic effects of Juglone and decomposed walnut leaf juice on muskmelon and cucumber seed germination and seedling growth

    In this study, effects of juglone and decomposed walnut leaf juice on muskmelon (Cucumis melo cv. Galia) and cucumber (Cucumis sativus cv. Beith Alpha) seed germination percentage and postgerminationseedling growth were investigated. Decomposition was carried out by keeping the leaves in distilled water. Muskmelon and cucumber seeds were germinated in Petri dishes at 25°C. Seed germination, seedling elongation and weights were determined at day 10. No significant effect of juglone and decomposed walnut leaf juice on muskmelon seed germination percentage was observed. However, germination of cucumber seed was inhibited significantly. It was found that while both the dry weight root and stems elongation of muskmelon and cucumber seedlings were affected negatively by juglone and undiluted decomposed walnut leaf juices. The negative effect decreased as dilution ratios of decomposed leaf juice increased

    Juglone effects on seedling growth in intact and coatless seeds of muskmelon

    Elongation, fresh and dry weights of muskmelon seedlings (Cucumis melo cv. Ký kavunu) were enhanced by juglone in intact seeds. In the case of coatless seeds, root elongation decreased but fresh and dry weight of the seedlings were increased by juglone. While protein content was slightly increased by juglone in cotyledons of intact seeds, it did not change significantly in coatless seeds. Catechol oxidizing activity of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) enzyme increased in cotyledons of juglone treated intactseeds whereas it did not change significantly in coatless seeds

    Acculturation and Adaptation of Syrian Refugees in Turkey: The role of (dis)concordance of acculturation orientations and identity threat

    The present chapter examined the social-psychological factors associated with the adaptation of Syrian refugees in Turkey. Specifically, building on the mutuality approach to acculturation, the current research considered both the role of refugees’ acculturation orientations towards culture maintenance and contact with the Turkish society, refugees’ meta-perceived acculturation orientations of the Turkish host society and the impact of perceived (dis)concordance of acculturation orientations and perceived identity threat (i.e., discrimination) on their psychological and sociocultural adaptation. This research extends previous research conducted with Syrian refugees in Turkey by examining both psychological and sociocultural adaptation of refugees and by considering the specific impact of (dis)concordance of acculturation orientations. Using data from a survey (109 participants) the results showed a negative association between own culture maintenance and psychological adaptation, whereas own desire for contact was not associated with sociocultural adaptation. Extending previous research, refugees’ perceived acculturation orientations from Turkish society, particularly perceived desire for contact, were positively related to psychological and sociocultural adaptation (albeit marginally for the latter). Finally, perceived discordance of acculturation was negatively related to psychological and sociocultural adaptation and positively related to perceived discrimination.     Industry 4.0 Driven Result-oriented PSS: An Assessment in the Energy Management

    Sustainability is a current challenge and all sectors, including the buildings one, are being called upon to provide a solution to mitigate climate change. The state of the art of energy management using Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) technology in building systems industry is characterized by a traditional monitoring approach which could assess the energy consumption of the building but that cannot manage and act the required action to improve the energy management according to a demand side approach. The aim of this paper is to overcome this traditional monitoring approach, presenting Simon, a new model proposed by Evogy, enabling a result-oriented product service system (PSS) for buildings through cyber physical systems, artificial intelligence, and internet of things adoption. The main findings highlight the benefits associated with the Simon model by virtue of digital-based predictive maintenance on the real system. In addition, its adoption allows the PSS provider to aggregate energy demand from the plethora of buildings and, according to digital technologies, not only monitor consumption but also implement equipment. Finally, the application case highlights the benefits are different and thus stands as a best practice for combining sustainability and digitization

    Tree-based channel assignment schemes for multi-channel wireless sensor networks

    Many sensor node platforms used for establishing wireless sensor networks (WSNs) can support multiple radio channels for wireless communication. Therefore, rather than using a single radio channel for whole network, multiple channels can be utilized in a sensor network simultaneously to decrease overall network interference, which may help increase the aggregate network throughput and decrease packet collisions and delays. This method, however, requires appropriate schemes to be used for assigning channels to nodes for multi-channel communication in the network. Because data generated by sensor nodes are usually delivered to the sink node using routing trees, a tree-based channel assignment scheme is a natural approach for assigning channels in a WSN. We present two fast tree-based channel assignment schemes (called bottom up channel assignment and neighbor count-based channel assignment) for multi-channel WSNs. We also propose a new interference metric that is used by our algorithms in making decisions. We validated and evaluated our proposed schemes via extensive simulation experiments. Our simulation results show that our algorithms can decrease interference in a network, thereby increasing performance, and that our algorithms are good alternatives for static channel assignment in WSNs.     Network patterns and strength of orbital currents in layered cuprates

    In the frame of the t-J-G model we derive a microscopical expression for circulating orbital currents in layered cuprates using the anomalous correlation functions. In agreement with muon spin relaxation, nuclear quadrupolar resonance and neutron scattering (NS) experiments in YBa2Cu3O6+x we successfully explain the order of magnitude and the monotonous increase of the internal magnetic fields resulting from these currents upon cooling. However, the marked enhancement of NS intensity at Tc, reported recently, seems to indicate a non-mean-field feature of coexistence between the current and superconducting states. A relation of this enhancement to the appearance of a small admixture of s-wave symmetry component of the conventional charge-density wave state and also the dependence of the sliding charge-current condensation energy on the phase of the order parameter are discussed

    Polaron effects on superexchange interaction: Isotope shifts of TN, Tc, and T* in layered copper oxides

    A compact expression has been obtained for the superexchange coupling of magnetic ions via intermediate anions with regard to polaron effects on both magnetic ions and intermediate anions. This expression is used to analyze the main features of the behavior of isotope shifts for temperatures of three types in layered cuprates: the Neel temperatures (TN), critical temperatures of transitions to a superconducting state (Tc), and characteristic temperatures of the pseudogap state of normal phases (T*). © 2002 MAIK "Nauka/Interperiodica"

    Organizational, regulatory and legal aspects оf european integration of higher medical education in Ukraine: a critical review

    The aim: The main purpose of this research is to conduct the theoretical and applied study of the legal profile enforcement for state attestation of medical graduates, the relevant legislative system, and its effectiveness; to identify the issues of special legislative requirements, as well as the search for ways to resolve it. Materials and methods: Basic methods: analysis, synthesis and comparison. Object of research: system of state certification of graduates of medical sciences. Investigation of this topic in the paper is carried out in the following logical sequence: firstly, the basic principles of the state integrated qualification exam were determined and analyzed; then the legal enforcement for integrated state qualification exam of master’s degree in discipline “22 Health Care” was considered. Also, a critical review of Ukrainian normative base for holding the state attestation of medical graduates was conducted. Conclusions: In view of foregoing, we can make a conclusion that in the modern globalization world, competition of national educational services should be ensured by a range of different activities: legal, organizational, financial, etc. The legal direction, domestic rules should correspond to similar, uniform rules and practices of the most effective state (regional, international) systems

    Residents' views about family medicine specialty education in Turkey

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Residents are one of the key stakeholders of specialty training. The Turkish Board of Family Medicine wanted to pursue a realistic and structured approach in the design of the specialty training programme. This approach required the development of a needs-based core curriculum built on evidence obtained from residents about their needs for specialty training and their needs in the current infrastructure. The aim of this study was to obtain evidence on residents' opinions and views about Family Medicine specialty training.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is a descriptive, cross-sectional study. The board prepared a questionnaire to investigate residents' views about some aspects of the education programme such as duration and content, to assess the residents' learning needs as well as their need for a training infrastructure. The questionnaire was distributed to the Family Medicine Departments (n = 27) and to the coordinators of Family Medicine residency programmes in state hospitals (n = 11) by e-mail and by personal contact.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 191 questionnaires were returned. The female/male ratio was 58.6%/41.4%. Nine state hospitals and 10 university departments participated in the study. The response rate was 29%. Forty-five percent of the participants proposed over three years for the residency duration with either extensions of the standard rotation periods in pediatrics and internal medicine or reductions in general surgery. Residents expressed the need for extra rotations (dermatology 61.8%; otolaryngology 58.6%; radiology 52.4%). Fifty-nine percent of the residents deemed a rotation in a private primary care centre necessary, 62.8% in a state primary care centre with a proposed median duration of three months. Forty-seven percent of the participants advocated subspecialties for Family Medicine, especially geriatrics. The residents were open to new educational methods such as debates, training with models, workshops and e-learning. Participation in courses and congresses was considered necessary. The presence of a department office and the clinical competency of the educators were more favored by state residents.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study gave the Board the chance to determine the needs of the residents that had not been taken into consideration sufficiently before. The length and the content of the programme will be revised according to the needs of the residents.</p
