Seismicity and Focal Mechanisms at the Calabro-Lucanian boundary along the Apennine chain (southern Italy)

    Get PDF
The Calabro-Lucanian boundary is a complex geological zone marking the transition between the highly seismogenic tectonic domains of Southern Apennines and the Calabrian Arc. Historical catalogues include earthquakes with macroseismic effects up to VII-VIII MCS (CPTI WORKING GROUP, 2004) and paleoseismological investigations suggested that earthquakes of magnitude between 6.5 and 7 may have occurred in this area, between the 6th and the 15th century (MICHETTI et alii, 2000). More recently, on 9 September 1998, an earthquake of moment magnitude M5.6 occurred at the north-western margin of the Pollino massif (GUERRA et alii, 2005; ARRIGO et alii, 2006) and since the second half of 2010 the same region was interested by a noteworthy seismic activity characterized by several swarms with thousands of events with a maximum magnitude of 3.6

Behaviour of the plasma concentration of gelatinases and their tissue inhibitors in subjects with venous leg ulcers.

Venous leg ulcers are common in subjects with chronic venous insufficiency. The increased intraluminal pressure causes alteration of the skin microcirculation, leukocyte activation and release of proteolytic enzymes leading to ulceration. An impaired expression and activity of matrix metalloproteases (MMPs) and their tissue inhibitors (TIMPs) might influence extracellular matrix degradation and deposition in chronic venous ulcers with the failure of the healing process. Our aim was to evaluate plasma concentration of gelatinases (MMP-2 and MMP-9) and their inhibitors (TIMP-1 and TIMP-2) in subjects with venous leg ulcers before and after the compression therapy. We enrolled 36 subjects (12 men and 24 women, mean age 67.38 ± 12.7 yrs) with non-infected venous leg ulcers (CEAP C6), which underwent a color Duplex scan examination of the veins and arteries of the inferior limbs and were treated with a multi-layer bandaging system. The ulcer healing was obtained in 23 subjects only (9 men and 14 women). We evaluated, on fasting venous blood, the plasma levels of MMP-2, MMP-9, TIMP-1 and TIMP-2 using ELISA kit, before and after the treatment. We observed a significant increase in plasma concentration of gelatinases and their inhibitors and in MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratio in subjects with leg ulcers in comparison with normal controls. In subjects with healed ulcers we found a decrease in MMP-9 and TIMP-1 levels and in MMP-2/TIMP-2 ratio compared to the baseline values, although higher levels of all the examined parameters in comparison with normal controls. In conclusion, plasma MMPs profile is impaired in subjects with venous leg ulcers and it improves after the healing, persisting anyway altered in respect to healthy controls

Early intestinal perforation secondary to congenital mesenteric defects

    Get PDF
Gastrointestinal perforation (GIP) in preterm neonates may be idiopathic, due to necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), or mechanical obstruction. The predominant cause of GIP in the neonatal period is NEC. Differential diagnosis with congenital malformations, including mesenteric defects leading to internal hernias, is mandatory if the onset is early. We describe two newborns with trans-mesenteric herniation resulting in GIP, and we discuss the presence of possible additional risk factors such as prematurity and predisposing vascular disruption in connective tissue disorders (Ehlers-Danlos syndrome), twinning, and use of assisted reproductive technologies. These cases prompted us to review our exploratory laparotomies performed for intestinal obstruction, complicated/or not with perforation, to identify the frequency of neonatal trans-mesenteric hernias in a referral hospital. The prevalence of GIP and of internal hernia was 25% and 3.3%, respectively. In conclusion, time-onset and particular conditions associated with GIP should lead to a high index of suspicion for internal hernias in order to achieve appropriate diagnosis and therapy

This document is the Accepted Manuscript version of a Published Work that appeared in final form in The Journal of Physical Chemistry C, copyright © American Chemical Society after peer review and technical editing by the publisher. To access the final edited and published work see https://doi.org/10.1021/acs.jpcc.0c06950.[EN] Imines are important building blocks in organic chemistry. Titanium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) MIL-125-NH2(Ti) can photocatalyze, under visible light and at room temperature, the selective aerobic oxidation of benzylamine to N-benzylidenebenzylamine. We investigated the reaction mechanism using catalytic tests, ex situ infrared spectroscopy, and density functional calculations. In the dark, the presence of MIL-125-NH2(Ti) alone does not improve the reaction yield with respect to a blank experiment. This poor catalytic performance in the dark is associated with the absence of polarizing species on the MOF surface, as confirmed by acetonitrile adsorption. Excitation with different spectral regions evidenced the determinant role of the 450 < lambda < 385 nm range for catalyst photoactivation. The calculations show that the last step of the reaction would have an energy barrier of 206 kJ mol(-1) in anhydrous conditions, while it decreases to 88 kJ mol(-1) only if the mechanism is mediated by two water molecules.Financial support by the Spanish Government is acknowledged through projects MAT2017-82288-C2-1-P and the Severo Ochoa program (SEV-2016-0683). Molecular analysis of hepatitis C virus infection in Bulgarian injecting drug users

    Get PDF
Intravenous drug users constitute a group at risk for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Today, no data are available on the molecular epidemiology of HCV in Bulgaria despite the fact that in recent years the incidence of acute hepatitis C infection among Bulgarian intravenous drug users increased sixfold and about 2/3 of them developed a chronic infection. The aim of this study was to determine the circulation of hepatitis C genotypes among drug users and to study the evolution and transmission history of the virus by molecular clock and Bayesian methods, respectively. Sequencing of NS5B gene showed that the genotype 3a was the most prevalent type among intravenous drug users. In the Bayesian tree, the 3a subtypes grouped in one main clade with one small cluster well statistically supported. The root of the tree was dated back to the year 1836, and the main clade from Bulgaria was dated 1960. The effective number of infections remained constant until about years 1950s, growing exponentially from the 1960s to the 1990s, reaching a plateau in the years 2000. The not significant intermixing with isolates from other countries may suggest a segregated circulation of the epidemic between 1940s and 1980s. The plateau reached by the epidemic in the early 2000s may indicate the partial success of the new preventive policies adopted in Bulgaria. J. Med. Virol. 83:1565-1570, 2011. © 2011 Wiley-Liss, Inc

    Tomography of Quantum Operations

    Get PDF
Quantum operations describe any state change allowed in quantum mechanics, including the evolution of an open system or the state change due to a measurement. In this letter we present a general method based on quantum tomography for measuring experimentally the matrix elements of an arbitrary quantum operation. As input the method needs only a single entangled state. The feasibility of the technique for the electromagnetic field is shown, and the experimental setup is illustrated based on homodyne tomography of a twin-beam.Comment: Submitted to Phys. Rev. Testing the stability of moment tensor solutions for small earthquakes in the Calabro-Peloritan Arc region (southern Italy)

    Get PDF
The aim of this study is to test the stability of moment tensor solutions for crustal earthquakes in the Calabro-Peloritan area (southern Italy). We used waveforms recorded by the Italian National Seismic Network managed by the Istituto Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia and the CAT-SCAN (Calabria Apennine Tyrrhenian - Subduction Collision Accretion Network) project. We computed the moment tensor solutions using the Cut And Paste (CAP) method. The technique allows the determination of the source depth, moment magnitude and focal mechanisms using a grid search technique. For the earthquakes investigated, we tried different station distributions and different velocity models. Results were also checked by computing the moment tensor solutions using the SLUMT grid-search method. Both methods (CAP and SLUMT) allow time shifts between synthetic and observed data in order to reduce the dependence of the solution on the assumed velocity model and on earthquake location errors. Comparisons have been made with the available published solutions. The final focal mechanisms were robustly determined. We show that the application of the CAP and SLUMT methods can provide good-quality solutions in a magnitude range not properly represented in the Italian national earthquake catalogues, and where the solutions estimated from Ponset polarities are often poorly constrained
