Puumala Hantavirus Excretion Kinetics in Bank Voles (Myodes glareolus)
One-sentence summary for table of contents: Virus may be transmitted by saliva, urine, and feces, and saliva may play a role in transmission to humans
Migrating Birds and Tickborne Encephalitis Virus
During spring and autumn 2001, we screened 13,260 migrating birds at Ottenby Bird Observatory, Sweden, and found 3.4% were infested with ticks. Four birds, each a different passerine species, carried tickborne encephalitis virus (TBEV)âinfected ticks (Ixodes ricinus). Migrating birds may play a role in the geographic dispersal of TBEV-infected ticks
Asteroseismology of solar-type stars with K2
We present the first detections by the NASA K2 Mission of oscillations in
solar-type stars, using short-cadence data collected during K2 Campaign\,1
(C1). We understand the asteroseismic detection thresholds for C1-like levels
of photometric performance, and we can detect oscillations in subgiants having
dominant oscillation frequencies around . Changes to the
operation of the fine-guidance sensors are expected to give significant
improvements in the high-frequency performance from C3 onwards. A reduction in
the excess high-frequency noise by a factor of two-and-a-half in amplitude
would bring main-sequence stars with dominant oscillation frequencies as high
as into play as potential asteroseismic targets for

Prevalence of psychiatric disorders in infertile women and men undergoing in vitro fertilization treatment
BACKGROUND: This study was undertaken to determine the prevalence of psychiatric disorders in infertile women and men undergoing in vitro fertilization (IVF) treatment. METHODS: Participants were 1090 consecutive women and men, 545 couples, attending a fertility clinic in Sweden during a two-year period. The Primary Care Evaluation of Mental Disorders (PRIME-MD), based on the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edn (DSM-IV), was used as the diagnostic tool for evaluating mood and anxiety disorders. RESULTS: Overall, 862 (79.1%) subjects filled in the PRIME-MD patient questionnaire. Any psychiatric diagnosis was present in 30.8 % of females and in 10.2 % of males in the study sample. Any mood disorder was present in 26.2 % of females and 9.2% of males. Major depression was the most common mood disorder, prevalent in 10.9 % of females and 5.1 % of males. Any anxiety disorder was encountered in 14.8 % of females and 4.9 % males. Only 21 % of the subjects with a psychiatric disorder according to DSM-IV received some form of treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Mood disorders are common in both women and men undergoing IVF treatment. The majority of subjects with a psychiatric disorder were undiagnosed and untreated
A five-year perspective on the situation of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome and status of the hantavirus reservoirs in Europe, 2005-2010
Hantavirus infections are reported from many countries in Europe and with highly variable annual case numbers. In 2010, more than 2,000 human cases were reported in Germany, and numbers above the baseline have also been registered in other European countries. Depending on the virus type human infections are characterised by mild to severe forms of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome. The member laboratories of the European Network for diagnostics of Imported Viral Diseases present here an overview of the progression of human cases in the period from 2005 to 2010. Further we provide an update on the available diagnostic methods and endemic regions in their countries, with an emphasis on occurring virus types and reservoirs
Asteroseismology from multi-month Kepler photometry: the evolved Sun-like stars KIC 10273246 and KIC 10920273
The evolved main-sequence Sun-like stars KIC 10273246 (F-type) and KIC
10920273 (G-type) were observed with the NASA Kepler satellite for
approximately ten months with a duty cycle in excess of 90%. Such continuous
and long observations are unprecedented for solar-type stars other than the
Sun.
We aimed mainly at extracting estimates of p-mode frequencies - as well as of
other individual mode parameters - from the power spectra of the light curves
of both stars, thus providing scope for a full seismic characterization.
The light curves were corrected for instrumental effects in a manner
independent of the Kepler Science Pipeline. Estimation of individual mode
parameters was based both on the maximization of the likelihood of a model
describing the power spectrum and on a classic prewhitening method. Finally, we
employed a procedure for selecting frequency lists to be used in stellar
modeling.
A total of 30 and 21 modes of degree l=0,1,2 - spanning at least eight radial
orders - have been identified for KIC 10273246 and KIC 10920273, respectively.
Two avoided crossings (l=1 ridge) have been identified for KIC 10273246,
whereas one avoided crossing plus another likely one have been identified for
KIC 10920273. Good agreement is found between observed and predicted mode
amplitudes for the F-type star KIC 10273246, based on a revised scaling
relation. Estimates are given of the rotational periods, the parameters
describing stellar granulation and the global asteroseismic parameters

What factors affect patients' recall of general practitioners' advice?

Abstract

Background

In order for patients to adhere to advice, provided by family doctors, they must be able to recall it afterwards. However, several studies have shown that most patients do not fully understand or memorize it. The aim of this study was to determine the influence of demographic characteristics, education, amount of given advice and the time between consultations on recalled advice.

Methods

A prospective survey, lasting 30 months, was conducted in an urban family practice in Slovenia. Logistic regression analysis was used to identify the risk factors for poorer recall.

Results

250 patients (87.7% response rate) received at least one and up to four pieces of advice (2.4 ± 0.8). A follow-up consultation took place at 47.4 ± 35.2 days. The determinants of better recall were high school (OR 0.4, 95% CI 0.15-0.99, p = 0.049) and college education (OR 0.3, 95% CI 0.10-1.00, p = 0.050), while worse recall was determined by number of given instructions three or four (OR 26.1, 95% CI 3.15-215.24, p = 0.002; OR 56.8, 95% CI 5.91-546.12, p < 0.001, respectively) and re-test interval: 15-30 days (OR 3.3, 95% CI 1.06-10.13, p = 0.040), 31-60 days (OR 3.2, 95% CI 1.28-8.07, p = 0.013) and more than 60 days (OR 2.5, 95% CI 1.05-6.02, p = 0.038).

Conclusions

Education was an important determinant factor and warrants further study. Patients should be given no more than one or two instructions in a consultation. When more is needed, the follow-up should be within the next 14 days, and would be of a greater benefit to higher educated patients.</p
