Spontaneous symmetry breaking as a resource for noncritically squeezed light
In the last years we have proposed the use of the mechanism of spontaneous
symmetry breaking with the purpose of generating perfect quadrature squeezing.
Here we review previous work dealing with spatial (translational and
rotational) symmetries, both on optical parametric oscillators and four-wave
mixing cavities, as well as present new results. We then extend the phenomenon
to the polarization state of the signal field, hence introducing spontaneous
polarization symmetry breaking. Finally we propose a Jaynes-Cummings model in
which the phenomenon can be investigated at the single-photon-pair level in a
non-dissipative case, with the purpose of understanding it from a most
fundamental point of view.Comment: Review for the proceedings of SPIE Photonics Europe. 11 pages, 5

Adenosine Signaling in Mast Cells and Allergic Diseases.
Adenosine is a nucleoside involved in the pathogenesis of allergic diseases. Its effects are mediated through its binding to G protein-coupled receptors: A1, A2a, A2b and A3. The receptors differ in the type of G protein they recruit, in the effect on adenylyl cyclase (AC) activity and the downstream signaling pathway triggered. Adenosine can produce both an enhancement and an inhibition of mast cell degranulation, indicating that adenosine effects on these receptors is controversial and remains to be clarified. Depending on the study model, A1, A2b, and A3 receptors have shown anti- or pro-inflammatory activity. However, most studies reported an anti-inflammatory activity of A2a receptor. The precise knowledge of the adenosine mechanism of action may allow to develop more efficient therapies for allergic diseases by using selective agonist and antagonist against specific receptor subtypes
Design strategies for positively charged endolysins : Insights into Artilysin development
Altres ajuts: acords transformatius de la UABEndolysins are bacteriophage-encoded enzymes that can specifically degrade the peptidoglycan layer of bacterial cell wall, making them an attractive tool for the development of novel antibacterial agents. The use of genetic engineering techniques for the production and modification of endolysins offers the opportunity to customize their properties and activity against specific bacterial targets, paving the way for the development of personalized therapies for bacterial infections. Gram-negative bacteria possess an outer membrane that can hinder the action of recombinantly produced endolysins. However, certain endolysins are capable of crossing the outer membrane by virtue of segments that share properties resembling those of cationic peptides. These regions increase the affinity of the endolysin towards the bacterial surface and assist in the permeabilization of the membrane. In order to improve the bactericidal effectiveness of endolysins, approaches have been implemented to increase their net charge, including the development of Artilysins containing positively charged amino acids at one end. At present, there are no specific guidelines outlining the steps for implementing these modifications. There is an ongoing debate surrounding the optimal location of positive charge, the need for a linker region, and the specific amino acid composition of peptides for modifying endolysins. The aim of this study is to provide clarity on these topics by analyzing and comparing the most effective modifications found in previous literature

In this work we describe part of the process carried out to adapt to the EEES two subjects (Algorithms and Programming - AP and Programming Languages - LP) of the degree on Computer Science at UAB. The adaptation is based on the utilization of a Project-Based Learning methodology.AP is a subject devoted to explain the theoretical basis of the analysis and design of algorithms, whereas LP applies these theoretical concepts using the C programming language. In the past, both subjects were seen as independent units although their contents are clearly complementary. In order to exploit this complementarity we decided to work towards a greater coordination of activities. The basis of this coordination is the development of a common programming project along all the semester. In this way, both subjects share the same piece of work and the students can acquire a global view of the programming basis. At the beginning of the semester we propose a generic problem that the students must solve and implement. We try to propose projects that can be appealing and motivating to the students. A good source of inspiration for that is programming videogames. As the semester advances we provide more details about the work to be done at the level of the design of the algorithm (AP) and at the level of programming in C (LP). The results of using this methodology are quite satisfactory. We have observed a greater interest and motivation of the students. Besides we have also quantitatively improved the academic results
GOLLUM: a next-generation simulation tool for electron, thermal and spin transport
We have developed an efficient simulation tool 'GOLLUM' for the computation
of electrical, spin and thermal transport characteristics of complex
nanostructures. The new multi-scale, multi-terminal tool addresses a number of
new challenges and functionalities that have emerged in nanoscale-scale
transport over the past few years. To illustrate the flexibility and
functionality of GOLLUM, we present a range of demonstrator calculations
encompassing charge, spin and thermal transport, corrections to density
functional theory such as LDA+U and spectral adjustments, transport in the
presence of non-collinear magnetism, the quantum-Hall effect, Kondo and Coulomb
blockade effects, finite-voltage transport, multi-terminal transport, quantum
pumps, superconducting nanostructures, environmental effects and pulling curves
and conductance histograms for mechanically-controlled-break-junction
experiments.Comment: 66 journal pages, 57 figure
Lowering the background level and the energy threshold of Micromegas x-ray detectors for axion searches
Axion helioscopes search for solar axions by their conversion in x-rays in
the presence of high magnetic fields. The use of low background x-ray detectors
is an essential component contributing to the sensitivity of these searches. In
this work, we review the recent advances on Micromegas detectors used in the
CERN Axion Solar Telescope (CAST) and proposed for the future International
Axion Observatory (IAXO). The actual setup in CAST has achieved background
levels below 10 keV cm s, a factor 100 lower than
the first generation of Micromegas detectors. This reduction is based on active
and passive shielding techniques, the selection of radiopure materials, offline
discrimination techniques and the high granularity of the readout. We describe
in detail the background model of the detector, based on its operation at CAST
site and at the Canfranc Underground Laboratory (LSC), as well as on Geant4
simulations. The best levels currently achieved at LSC are low than 10
keV cm s and show good prospects for the application of
this technology in IAXO. Finally, we present some ideas and results for
reducing the energy threshold of these detectors below 1 keV, using
high-transparent windows, autotrigger electronics and studying the cluster
shape at different energies. As a high flux of axion-like-particles is expected
in this energy range, a sub-keV threshold detector could enlarge the physics
case of axion helioscopes.Comment: Proceedings of 3rd International Conference on Technology and
