Events leading up to the June 2015 outburst of V404 Cyg
On 2015 June 15 the burst alert telescope (BAT) on board {\em Swift} detected
an X-ray outburst from the black hole transient V404 Cyg. We monitored V404 Cyg
for the last 10 years with the 2-m Faulkes Telescope North in three optical
bands (V, R, and i). We found that, one week prior to this outburst, the
optical flux was 0.1--0.3 mag brighter than the quiescent orbital modulation,
implying an optical precursor to the X-ray outburst. There is also a hint of a
gradual optical decay (years) followed by a rise lasting two months prior to
the outburst. We fortuitously obtained an optical spectrum of V404 Cyg 13 hours
before the BAT trigger. This too was brighter () than
quiescence, and showed spectral lines typical of an accretion disk, with
characteristic absorption features of the donor being much weaker. No He II
emission was detected, which would have been expected had the X-ray flux been
substantially brightening. This, combined with the presence of intense
H emission, about 7 times the quiescent level, suggests that the disk
entered the hot, outburst state before the X-ray outburst began. We propose
that the outburst is produced by a viscous-thermal instability triggered close
to the inner edge of a truncated disk. An X-ray delay of a week is consistent
with the time needed to refill the inner region and hence move the inner edge
of the disk inwards, allowing matter to reach the central BH, finally turning

Crystallization of the regulatory and effector domains of the key sporulation response regulator Spo0A
The key response-regulator gene of sporulation, spo0A, has been cloned from Bacillus stearothermophilus and the encoded protein purified. The DNA-binding and phospho-acceptor domains of Spo0A have been prepared by tryptic digestion of the intact protein and subsequently crystallized in forms suitable for X-ray crystallographic studies. The DNA-binding domain has been crystallized in two forms, one of which diffracts X-rays to beyond 2.5 Angstrom spacing. Electron-impact excitation of X 1Sigma<sub>g</sub><sup>+</sup>(v[double-prime]=0) to the a[double-prime] 1Sigma<sub>g</sub><sup>+</sup>, b 1Piu, c3 1Piu, o3 1Piu, b[prime] 1Sigma<sub>u</sub><sup>+</sup>, c<sub>4</sub><sup>[prime]</sup> 1Sigma<sub>u</sub><sup>+</sup>, G 3Piu, and F 3Piu states of molecular nitrogen
Measurements of differential cross sections (DCSs) for electron-impact excitation of the a[double-prime] 1Sigmag+, b 1Piu, c3 1Piu, o3 1Piu, b[prime] 1Sigmau+, c4[prime] 1Sigmau+, G 3Piu, and F 3Piu states in N2 from the X 1Sigmag+(v[double-prime]=0) ground level are presented. The DCSs were obtained from energy-loss spectra in the region of 12 to 13.82 eV measured at incident energies of 17.5, 20, 30, 50, and 100 eV and for scattering angles ranging from 2° to 130°. The analysis of the spectra follows a different algorithm from that employed in a previous study of N2 for the valence states [Khakoo et al. Phys. Rev. A 71, 062703 (2005)], since the 1Piu and 1Sigmau+ states form strongly interacting Rydberg-valence series. The results are compared with existing data
The X-ray Size-Temperature Relation for Intermediate Redshift Galaxy Clusters
We present the first measurements of the X-ray size-temperature (ST) relation
in intermediate redshift (z~0.30) galaxy clusters. We interpret the local ST
relation (z~0.06) in terms of underlying scaling relations in the cluster dark
matter properties, and then we use standard models for the redshift evolution
of those dark matter properties to show that the ST relation does not evolve
with redshift. We then use ROSAT HRI observations of 11 clusters to examine the
intermediate redshift ST relation; for currently favored cosmological
parameters, the intermediate redshift ST relation is consistent with that of
local clusters. Finally, we use the ST relation and our evolution model to
measure angular diameter distances; with these 11 distances we evaluate
constraints on Omega_M and Omega_L which are consistent with those derived from
studies of Type Ia supernovae. The data rule out a model with Omega_M=1 and
Omega_L=0 with 2.5 sigma confidence. When limited to models where
Omega_M+Omega_L=1, these data are inconsistent with Omega_M=1 with 3 sigma

Noether's Theorem and time-dependent quantum invariants
The time dependent-integrals of motion, linear in position and momentum
operators, of a quantum system are extracted from Noether's theorem
prescription by means of special time-dependent variations of coordinates. For
the stationary case of the generalized two-dimensional harmonic oscillator, the
time-independent integrals of motion are shown to correspond to special
Bragg-type symmetry properties. A detailed study for the non-stationary case of
this quantum system is presented. The linear integrals of motion are
constructed explicitly for the case of varying mass and coupling strength. They
are obtained also from Noether's theorem. The general treatment for a
multi-dimensional quadratic system is indicated, and it is shown that the
time-dependent variations that give rise to the linear invariants, as conserved
quantities, satisfy the corresponding classical homogeneous equations of motion

An extreme proto-cluster of luminous dusty starbursts in the early Universe
We report the identification of an extreme proto-cluster of galaxies in the
early Universe whose core (nicknamed Distant Red Core, DRC) is formed by at
least ten dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs), confirmed to lie at via detection of [CI](1-0), CO(6-5), CO(4-3),
CO(2-1) and emission lines, detected
using ALMA and ATCA. The spectroscopically-confirmed components of the
proto-cluster are distributed over a region
and have a collective obscured star-formation rate (SFR) of , considerably higher than has been seen before in any
proto-cluster of galaxies or over-densities of DSFGs at . Most of
the star formation is taking place in luminous DSFGs since no Ly
emitters are detected in the proto-cluster core, apart from a Ly blob
located next to one of the DRC dusty components and extending over . The total obscured SFR of the proto-cluster could rise to if all the members of an over-density
of bright DSFGs discovered around DRC in a wide-field LABOCA 870-m image
are part of the same structure. The total halo mass of DRC could be as high as
and could be the progenitor of a Coma-like
cluster at . The relatively short gas-depletion times of the DRC
components suggest either the presence of a mechanism able to trigger extreme
star formation simultaneously in galaxies spread over a few hundred kpc or the
presence of gas flows from the cosmic web able to sustain star formation over

Transport, optical and electronic properties of the half metal CrO2
The electronic structure of CrO_2 is critically discussed in terms of the
relation of existing experimental data and well converged LSDA and GGA
calculations of the electronic structure and transport properties of this half
metal magnet, with a particular emphasis on optical properties. We find only
moderate manifestations of many body effects. Renormalization of the density of
states is not large and is in the typical for transition metals range. We find
substantial deviations from Drude behavior in the far-infrared optical
conductivity. These appear because of the unusually low energy of interband
optical transitions. The calculated mass renormalization is found to be rather
sensitive to the exchange-correlation functional used and varies from 10%
(LSDA) to 90% (GGA), using the latest specific heat data. We also find that
dressing of the electrons by spin fluctuations, because of their high energy,
renormalizes the interband optical transition at as high as 4 eV by about 20%.
Although we find no clear indications of strong correlations of the Hubbard
type, strong electron-magnon scattering related to the half metallic band
structure is present and this leads to a nontrivial temperature dependence of
the resistivity and some renormalization of the electron spectra.Comment: 9 Revtex 2 column pages, including 8 postscript figures. Two more
