Congenital heart disease (CHD) entails structural defects in the morphogenesis of the heart or its main vessels. Analyzing exercise capacity of children and adolescents with CHD is important to improve their functional condition and quality of life, since it can allow timely intervention on poor prognostic factors associated with higher risk of morbidity and mortality. To describe exercise capacity in children and adolescents with CHD compared with healthy controls.A systematic review was carried out. Randomized clinical trials and observational studies were included assessing exercise capacity through direct and indirect methods in children and adolescents between 5 and 17 years-old. A sensitive analysis was performed including studies with CHD repaired participants. Additionally, it was sub-analyzed by age range (< and ? 12 years old). Two independent reviewers analyzed the studies, extracted the data, and assessed the quality of the evidence.5619 articles were found and 21 were considered for the review. Eighteen articles used the direct exercise capacity measurement method by cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET). The CHD group showed significant differences in peak oxygen consumption (VO2peak) with a value of -7.9 ml/Kg/min (95% CI: -9.9, -5.9, p = 0.00001), maximum workload (Wmax) -41.5 (95% CI: -57.9, -25.1 watts, p = 0.00001), ventilatory equivalent (VE/VCO2 ) slope 2.6 (95% CI: 0.3, 4.8), oxygen pulse (O2 pulse)-2.4 ml/beat (95% CI: -3.7, -1.1, p = 0.0003), and maximum heart rate (HRmax) -15 bpm (95% CI: -18, -12 bpm, p = 0.00001), compared with healthy controls. Adolescents (? 12 yrs) with CHD had a greater reduction in VO2peak (-10.0 ml/Kg/min (95% CI: -12.0, -5.3), p < 0.00001), Wmax (-45.5 watts (95% CI: -54.4, -36.7), p < 0.00001) and HRmax (-21 bpm (95% CI: -28, -14), p<0.00001).Suffering CHD in childhood and adolescence is associated with lower exercise capacity as shown by worse VO2peak, Wmax, VE/VCO2 slope, O2 pulse, and HRmax compared with matched healthy controls. The reduction in exercise capacity was greater in adolescents.www.crd.york.ac.uk/prospero/display_record.php?RecordID=208963, identifier: CRD42020208963.Copyright © 2022 Villaseca-Rojas, Varela-Melo, Torres-Castro, Vasconcello-Castillo, Mazzucco, Vilaró and Blanco

ONCOVER project: Volatile compound detection system for early cancer diagnosis.Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) is routinely used to detect biomolecules related to several diseases facilitating diagnosis and monitoring of these, as well as the possibility of decreasing their mortality rate. Several methods have been carried out to improve the ELISA sensitivity through antibodies immobilization on the microtiter plates. Here, we have developed a strategy of antibodies immobilization to improve the ELISA sensitivity increasing the antibody density surface through the tetrazine (Tz)-trans-cyclooctene (TCO) reaction. For this, we prepared surfaces with tetrazine groups while the captured antibody was conjugated with TCO. The tetrazine surfaces were prepared in two different ways: (1) from aminated plates and (2) from Tz-BSA-coated plates. The surfaces were evaluated using two sandwich ELISA models, one of them using the low-affinity antibody anti-c-myc as a capture antibody to detect the c-myc-GST-IL8h recombinant protein, and the other one to detect the carcinoembryonic human protein (CEA). The sensitivity increased in both surfaces treated with tetrazine in comparison with the standard unmodified surface. The c-myc-GST-IL8h detection was around 10-fold more sensible on both tetrazine surfaces, while CEA ELISA detection increased 12-fold on surfaces coated with Tz-BSA. In conclusion, we show that it is possible to improve the ELISA sensitivity using this immobilization system, where capture antibodies bond covalently to surfaces.Compra Publica Precomercial, Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad, Espana 2012/00006

    What makes a galaxy radio-loud?

We compare the Spectral Energy Distribution (SED) of radio-loud and radio-quiet AGNs in three different samples observed with SDSS: radio-loud AGNs (RLAGNs), Low Luminosity AGNs (LLAGNs) and AGNs in isolated galaxies (IG-AGNs). All these galaxies have similar optical spectral characteristics. The median SED of the RLAGNs is consistent with the characteristic SED of quasars, while that of the LLAGNs and IG-AGNs are consistent with the SED of LINERs, with a lower luminosity in the IG-AGNs than in the LLAGNs. We infer the masses of the black holes (BHs) from the bulge masses. These increase from the IG-AGNs to the LLAGNs and are highest for the RLAGNs. All these AGNs show accretion rates near or slightly below 10% of the Eddington limit, the differences in luminosity being solely due to different BH masses. Our results suggests there are two types of AGNs, radio quiet and radio loud, differing only by the mass of their bulges or BHs.Comment: 3 pages, 3 figures; to appear in Proceedings of IAU Symposium No. 284, The Spectral Energy Distribution of Galaxies (SED2011), Preston, UK, 5-9 sep. 201

Balmer jump temperature determination in a large sample of low-metallicity H II regions

Aims. Continuing the systematic determination of the electron temperature of H II regions using the Balmer and/or Paschen discontinuities by Guseva et al. (2006) we focus here on 3.6m ESO telescope observations of a large new sample of 69 H II regions in 45 blue compact dwarf (BCD) galaxies. This data set spans a wide range in metallicity (Zsun/60<Z<Zsun/3) and, combined with the sample of 47 H II regions from Guseva et al. (2006), yields the largest spectroscopic data set ever used to derive the electron temperature in the H+ zone. Methods. In the same way as in Guseva et al. (2006) we have used a Monte Carlo technique to vary free parameters and to calculate a series of model spectral energy distributions (SEDs) for each H II region. The electron temperature in the H+ zones was derived from the best fitting synthetic and observed SEDs in the wavelength range ~3200-5100A, which includes the Balmer jump. Results. On the base of the present large spectroscopic sample we find that in hot (Te(H+)>11000 K) H II regions the temperature of the O2+ zone, determined from doubly ionised oxygen forbidden lines, does not differ statistically from the temperature of the H+ zone. Thus, we confirm and strengthen the finding by Guseva et al. (2006). We emphasize that due to a number of modelling assumptions and the observational uncertainties for individual objects, only a large, homogeneous sample, as the one used here, can enable a conclusive study of the relation between Te(H+) and Te(O III).Comment: 39 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

Global change and direct sun near the ecuador increase the temperature of cities whereas forests regulate such temperature. We therefore assessed the structure and above ground biomass of two forest remnants nearby a newly built urbanization in Daule, Ecuador (Daule 1-2). We made n=5 transects (25 m × 4 m) covering 0.05 ha/site, then measured all trees ≥2.5 cm dbh (1.3 m above ground level) and compared with other forests studied by Alwyn Gentry. Daule-1 and Daule-2 had 39 and 35 individuals, respectively whereas Gentry found 159 and 216 individuals at Capeira and Esmeraldas. The densities for our n=5 transects (average ± standard error) were smaller for (Daule-1=780±37.42 ind/ha) and (Daule-2=740±40.00 ind/ha) while Capeira and Esmeraldas (n=10 transects for each site) which had (2270±211.37 ind/ha) and (3540±265.50 ind/ha), respectively (ANOVA, P<0.001). The carbon captured was Daule-1=131.6 Mg/ha, Daule-2=111.7 Mg/ha, Daule-1+Daule-2=243.3 Mg/ha likewise Capeira 210.6 Mg / ha and Esmeraldas 181.5 Mg / ha. Such results suggest that forest remnants play an important role for people’s life quality by capturing carbon dioxide and producing oxygen; role they would play better if the forests would have more extensive. &nbsp
