ATHLETE-SPECIFIC ANALYSES OF LEG JOINT KINETICS DURING MAXIMUM VELOCITY SPRINT RUNNING
The effect of variations in joint kinetics on sprint performance in individual athletes is not yet known. To investigate biomechanical contributions to maximum velocity sprint running, data were collected from one elite male sprinter performing maximum effort 60 m sprints. High-speed video (200 Hz) and ground reaction force (1000 Hz) data were collected at the 45 m mark. Horizontal velocity and joint kinetics, via inverse dynamics, were calculated for two trials. The velocity of the step was closely linked to step length, knee angular velocity before touchdown, peak-to-peak centre of mass oscillation, hip extension moment during stance and ankle positive work before take-off. The study revealed the potential for athlete-specific, detailed biomechanical analysis and feedback to aid the technical work of athletes and their coaches across a range of sporting skills
Comparison between 2-D and 3-D codes in dynamical simulations of gas flow in barred galaxies
Context: One of the ways to determine the contribution of the dark halo to
the gravitational potential of a galaxy is the study of non-circular
(streaming) motions and the associated gas shocks in the bar region. These
motions, determined by the potential in the inner parts, can break the
disk-halo degeneracy. Here, two main fluid dynamical approaches have been
chosen to model the non-circular motions in the bar region; a 2-D Eulerian grid
code for an isothermal gas (FS2) and a 3-D smoothed particle hydrodynamic code
(N-body/SPH). Aims: The aim of this paper is to compare and quantify the
differences of the gas flows in rotating barred potential obtained using two
different fluid dynamical approaches. We analyse the effect of using 2-D and a
3-D codes in the calculation of gas flow in barred galaxies and to which extend
the results are affected by the code. To do this, we derive the velocity field
and density maps for the mass model of NGC 4123 using a 3-D N-body/SPH code and
compare the results to the previous 2-D Eulerian grid code results. Methods:
Numerical modelling, 3-D N-body/SPH simulations Results: The global velocity
field and the gas distribution is very similar in both models. The study shows
that the position and strength of the shocks developed in the SPH simulations
do not vary significantly compared to the results derived from the 2-D FS2
code. The largest velocity difference across the shock is 20\kms between the
2-D and 3-D fluid dynamical models. Conclusions: The results obtained in the
studies deriving the dark matter content of barred galaxies using the bar
streaming motions and strength and position of shocks are robust to the fluid
dynamical model used. The effect of 2-D and 3-D modelling can be neglected in
this type of studies.Comment: 5 pages, accepted for publication in A&
The gravitational instability of a stream of co-orbital particles
We describe the dynamics of a stream of equally spaced macroscopic particles
in orbit around a central body (e.g. a planet or star). A co-orbital
configuration of small bodies may be subject to gravitational instability,
which takes the system to a spreading, disordered and collisional state. We
detail the linear instability's mathematical and physical features using the
shearing sheet model and subsequently track its nonlinear evolution with local
N-body simulations. This model provides a convenient tool with which to
understand the gravitational and collisional dynamics of narrow belts, such as
Saturn's F-ring and the streams of material wrenched from tidally disrupted
bodies. In particular, we study the tendency of these systems to form
long-lived particle aggregates. Finally, we uncover an unexpected connection
between the linear dynamics of the gravitational instability and the
magnetorotational instability.Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures, 1 table. MNRAS, accepte
The isolated interacting galaxy pair NGC 5426/27 (Arp 271)
We present H alpha observations of the isolated interacting galaxy pair NGC
5426/27 using the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer PUMA. The velocity field,
various kinematical parameters and rotation curve for each galaxy were derived.
The FWHM map and the residual velocities map were also computed to study the
role of non-circular motions of the gas. Most of these motions can be
associated with the presence of spiral arms and structure such as central bars.
We found a small bar-like structure in NGC 5426, a distorted velocity field for
NGC 5427 and a bridge-like feature between both galaxies which seems to be
associated with NGC 5426. Using the observed rotation curves, a range of
possible masses was computed for each galaxy. These were compared with the
orbital mass of the pair derived from the relative motion of the participants.
The rotation curve of each galaxy was also used to fit different mass
distribution models considering the most common theoretical dark halo models.
An analysis of the interaction process is presented and a possible 3D scenario
for this encounter is also suggested.Comment: 27 pages, 15 figures, to be published in Astronomy & Astrophysic
