Engineering and harnessing giant atoms in high-dimensional baths: a cold atoms' implementation
Emitters coupled simultaneously to distant positions of a photonic bath, the
so-called giant atoms, represent a new paradigm in quantum optics. When coupled
to one-dimensional baths, as recently implemented with transmission lines or
SAW waveguides, they lead to striking effects such as chiral emission or
decoherence-free atomic interactions. Here, we show how to create giant atoms
in dynamical state-dependent optical lattices, which offers the possibility of
coupling them to structured baths in arbitrary dimensions. This opens up new
avenues to a variety of phenomena and opportunities for quantum simulation. In
particular, we show how to engineer unconventional radiation patterns, like
multi-directional chiral emission, as well as collective interactions that can
be used to simulate non-equilibrium many-body dynamics with no analogue in
other setups. Besides, the recipes we provide to harness giant atoms in high
dimensions can be exported to other platforms where such non-local couplings
can be engineered.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figures. Title changed to accommodate to the new focus of

Identification of the optical and near-infrared counterpart of GRS 1758-258
Context. Understood to be a microquasar in the Galactic center region, GRS
1758-258 has not yet been unambiguously identified to have an
optical/near-infrared counterpart, mainly because of the high absorption and
the historic lack of suitable astrometric stars, which led to the use of
secondary astrometric solutions. Although it is considered with 1E 1740.7-2942
as the prototypical microquasar in the Galactic center region, the Galactic
origin of both sources has not yet been confirmed. Aims. We attempt to improve
previous astrometry to identify a candidate counterpart to GRS 1758-258. We
present observations with the Gran Telescopio de Canarias (GTC), in which we
try to detect any powerful emission lines that would infer an extragalactic
origin of this source. Methods. We use modern star catalogues to reanalyze
archival images of the GRS 1758-258 field in the optical and near-infrared
wavelengths, and compute a new astrometric solution. We also reanalyzed
archival radio data of GRS 1758-258 to determine a new and more accurate radio
position. Results. Our improved astrometric solution for the GRS 1758-258 field
represents a significant advancement on previous works and allows us to
identify a single optical/near-infrared source, which we propose as the
counterpart of GRS 1758-258. The GTC spectrum of this source is however of low
signal-to-noise ratio and does not rule out a Galactic origin. Hence, new
spectral observations are required to confirm or discard a Galactic nature.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted by Astronomy and Astrophysic
Plastic bowing of a bone is a rare entity that some-
times goes unnoticed. It’s a typical injury in children, who
have more elastic bones than adults. Most of the plastic
bowing of the forearm take place by falls with an outstretched
arm, causing deformities, pain and a limitation of pronation
and supination. In order to reduce the curvature of the bone,
opposing forces to those that produced the injury are needed,
maintained for a long time. In children younger than 4 years,
with an enormous remodelling capacity, only great deformi-
ties >20º should be reduced. For those older than 10 years,
with little remodelling capacity, angulations >10-15º must be
manipulated. The greatest complication derived from a bad
reduction is the limitation of the pronation and supination,
which in most cases does not modify the functionality of the
extremity
Single-photon source over the terahertz regime
We present a proposal for a tunable source of single photons operating in the
terahertz (THz) regime. This scheme transforms incident visible photons into
quantum THz radiation by driving a single polar quantum emitter with an optical
laser, with its permanent dipole enabling dressed THz transitions enhanced by
the resonant coupling to a cavity. This mechanism offers optical tunability of
properties such as the frequency of the emission or its quantum statistics
(ranging from antibunching to entangled multi-photon states) by modifying the
intensity and frequency of the drive. We show that the implementation of this
proposal is feasible with state-of-the-art photonics technology.Comment: 18 pages, 14 figure
Perception of electronic cigarettes in the general population: does their usefulness outweigh their risks?
Objective: To describe and compare the perceptions of the general population about the harmful effects of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) on users and on those passively exposed to e-cigarettes and the perceptions about e-cigarette usefulness for reducing or eliminating tobacco smoking. Design, setting, and participants: We analysed cross-sectional data from a longitudinal study of a representative sample of the general adult (≥16 years) population of Barcelona, Spain (336 men and 400 women). The fieldwork was conducted between May 2013 and February 2014. We computed the percentages, adjusted OR and their corresponding 95% CI among participants with some awareness of e-cigarettes (79.2% of the sample). Primary and secondary outcome measures: We assessed the perception about harmfulness for e-cigarette users and for passively exposed non-e-cigarette users, as well as the perception of usefulness for smokers of cigarette cessation and reduction

Cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the Spanish version of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons-Foot and Ankle Module (AAOS-FAMsp)
Background The current study performed a cross-cultural adaptation to Spanish and examined the internal and external validation of the AAOS-FAM questionnaire. Methods A direct translation (English to Spanish) and a reverse translation (Spanish to English) were performed by two independent professional native translators. Cronbach’s α coefficients were calculated to analyse the internal consistency of the measure. The factor structure and construct validity were analysed after extraction by maximum likelihood (EML); extraction was necessary if the following three requirements were met: accounting for ≥10 % of variance, Eigenvalue >1.0 and a scree plot inflexion point. The standard error of measurement and minimal detectable change 90 (MDC90) were calculated. Criterion validity was calculated by analysing the correlation between the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons-Foot and Ankle Module (Spanish version) (AAOS-FAMsp) and Spanish versions of the questionnaires FFI and FHSQ. Results Regarding internal consistency, Cronbach’s α was 0.877, and in the test-retest analysis, the ICC ranged between 0.899 and 0.942. Error measures were calculated by MDC90 and SEM, which showed values of 3.444 and 1.476 %, respectively. The analysis demonstrated a goodness of fit chi-squared value of 803.166 (p p r = 0.206 (p r = 0.665 (p Conclusions The results indicate that AAOS-FAMsp has satisfactory psychometric properties, facilitating the inclusion of Spanish-speaking individuals into both research and clinical practice

Influence of climate change on the flowering of temperate fruit trees
It is well known that winter chilling is necessary for the flowering of temperate trees. The chilling requirement is a criterion for choosing a species or variety at a given location. Also chemistry products can be used for reducing the chilling-hours needs but make our production more expensive. This study first analysed the observed values of chilling hours for some representative agricultural locations in Spain for the last three decades and their projected changes under climate change scenarios. Usually the chilling is measured and calculated as chilling-hours, and different methods have been used to calculate them (e.g. Richarson et al., 1974 among others) according to the species considered. For our objective North Carolina method (Shaltout and Unrath, 1983) was applied for apples, Utah method (Richardson et al. 1974) for peach and grapevine and the approach used by De Melo-Abreu et al. (2004) for olive trees. The influence of climate change in temperate trees was studied by calculating projections of chilling-hours with climate data from Regional Climate Models (RCMs) at high resolution (25 km) from the European Project ENSEMBLES (http://www.ensembles-eu.org/). These projections will allow for analysing the modelled variations of chill-hours between 2nd half of 20C and 1st half of 21C at the study locations
