    The Serret-Andoyer Riemannian metric and Euler-Poinsot rigid body motion

    The Euler-Poinsot rigid body motion is a standard mechanical system and is the model for left-invariant Riemannian metrics on SO(3). In this article, using the Serret-Andoyer variables we parameterize the solutions and compute the Jacobi fields in relation with the conjugate locus evaluation. Moreover the metric can be restricted to a 2D surface and the conjugate points of this metric are evaluated using recent work [4] on surfaces of revolution

    Geometric Approach to Pontryagin's Maximum Principle

    Since the second half of the 20th century, Pontryagin's Maximum Principle has been widely discussed and used as a method to solve optimal control problems in medicine, robotics, finance, engineering, astronomy. Here, we focus on the proof and on the understanding of this Principle, using as much geometric ideas and geometric tools as possible. This approach provides a better and clearer understanding of the Principle and, in particular, of the role of the abnormal extremals. These extremals are interesting because they do not depend on the cost function, but only on the control system. Moreover, they were discarded as solutions until the nineties, when examples of strict abnormal optimal curves were found. In order to give a detailed exposition of the proof, the paper is mostly self\textendash{}contained, which forces us to consider different areas in mathematics such as algebra, analysis, geometry.Comment: Final version.     Experimental and theoretical studies of tetramethoxy-p-benzoquinone: infrared spectra, structural and lithium insertion properties

    International audienceIn the search for low-polluting electrode materials for batteries, the use of redox-active organic compounds represents a promising alternative to conventional metal-based systems. In this article we report a combined experimental and theoretical study of tetramethoxy-p-benzoquinone (TMQ). In carbonate-based electrolytes, electrochemical behaviour of this compound is characterized by a reversible insertion process located at approximately 2.85 V vs. Li+/Li0. This relatively high potential reactivity, coupled with our effort to develop computational methodologies in the field of organic electrode materials, prompted us to complement these experimental data with theoretical studies performed using density functional theory (DFT). Single crystals of TMQ were synthesized and thoroughly characterized showing that this quinonic species crystallised in the P21/n space group. The experimental crystal structure of TMQ was then used to assess various DFT methods. The structural features and vibrational spectra were thus predicted by using as a whole five common density functionals (PBE, LDA, revPBE, PBEsol, B3PW91) with and without a semi-empirical correction to account for the van der Waals interactions using either Grimme's (DFT-D2) or Tkatchenko-Scheffler (TS) scheme. The most reliable combination of the DFT functional and the explicit dispersion correction was chosen to study the Li-intercalated molecular crystal (LiTMQ) with the view of indentifying Li insertion sites. A very close agreement with the experiment was found for the average voltage by using the most stable relaxed hypothetical LiTMQ structure. Additionally, a comparison of vibrational spectra gained either for TMQ molecule and its dimer in gas phase or through periodic calculation was undertaken with respect to the experimentally measured infrared spectra. The topological features of the bonds were also investigated in conjunction with estimates of net atomic charges to gain insight into the effect of chemical bonding and intermolecular interaction on Li intercalation. Finally, π-electron delocalization of both quinone and alkali salts of p-semiquinone were determined using the Harmonic Oscillator model of Aromaticity (HOMA) or aromatic fluctuation index (FLU) calculations

    A connection between optimal control theory and adiabatic passage techniques in quantum systems

    This work explores the relationship between optimal control theory and adiabatic passage techniques in quantum systems. The study is based on a geometric analysis of the Hamiltonian dynamics constructed from the Pontryagin Maximum Principle. In a three-level quantum system, we show that the Stimulated Raman Adiabatic Passage technique can be associated to a peculiar Hamiltonian singularity. One deduces that the adiabatic pulse is solution of the optimal control problem only for a specific cost functional. This analysis is extended to the case of a four-level quantum system.Comment: 19 pages, 6 figure

    Paraphrastic Reformulations in Spoken Corpora

    International audienceOur work addresses the automatic detection of paraphrastic reformulation in French spoken corpora. The proposed approach is syn-tagmatic. It is based on specific markers and the specificities of the spoken language. Manual multi-dimensional annotation performed by two annotators provides fine-grained reference data. An automatic method is proposed in order to decide whether sentences contain or not paraphras-tic relations. The obtained results show up to 66.4% precision. Analysis of the manual annotations indicates that few paraphrastic segments show morphological modifications (inflection, derivation or compounding) and that the syntactic equivalence between the segments is seldom respected, as these usually belong to different syntactic categories

    Hamiltonian dynamics and constrained variational calculus: continuous and discrete settings

    The aim of this paper is to study the relationship between Hamiltonian dynamics and constrained variational calculus. We describe both using the notion of Lagrangian submanifolds of convenient symplectic manifolds and using the so-called Tulczyjew's triples. The results are also extended to the case of discrete dynamics and nonholonomic mechanics. Interesting applications to geometrical integration of Hamiltonian systems are obtained.Comment: 33 page

    Dans cette contribution, nous prĂ©sentons la base CLAPI dĂ©veloppĂ©e au laboratoire ICAR dans le contexte de l’évolution des bases de donnĂ©es de langues parlĂ©es en France au cours des trente derniĂšres annĂ©es. Nous dĂ©taillons les deux composantes de CLAPI, l’archive de corpus de langue parlĂ©e en interaction audio et vidĂ©o enregistrĂ©s dans des situations sociales naturelles variĂ©es, et la plateforme d’outils.L’usage et l’apport de CLAPI sont illustrĂ©s par deux Ă©tudes. L’une dĂ©crit comment la base peut ĂȘtre utilisĂ©e pour des travaux de linguistique interactionnelle intĂ©grant la multimodalitĂ© (« oh lĂ  là ») ; l’autre concerne une recherche combinant donnĂ©es et mĂ©tadonnĂ©es (« trop »). L’article est aussi l’occasion d’un bilan plus gĂ©nĂ©ral. La mise en perspective montre en effet qu’aprĂšs la pĂ©riode des questions est venue celle des dilemmes. La pĂ©riode des questions, choix et dĂ©cisions Ă  toutes sortes de niveaux a accompagnĂ© la mise en place des bases de donnĂ©es. L’expĂ©rience permet maintenant de mesurer leurs indĂ©niables apports en termes non seulement de quantitĂ© de donnĂ©es disponibles (et traitables grĂące aux outils), mais aussi de qualitĂ© (comme consĂ©quence des exigences de standardisation liĂ©es au partage des donnĂ©es). La pĂ©riode des dilemmes nous conduit Ă  nous interroger sur les meilleurs choix Ă  opĂ©rer aujourd’hui dans les relations entre la poursuite des recherches sur des corpus variĂ©s (et parfois sensibles) et les exigences des bases de donnĂ©es ouvertes.In this contribution, we present the development of the CLAPI by the ICAR Lab in the context of the evolution of the databases of spoken languages in France during the last thirty years. We describe the two components of CLAPI, the archive of corpus of spoken languages in interaction, audio and video, recorded in varied naturally-occurring social situations, and the plateform of tools.The use and the support of CLAPI the research are shown out of two studies. One illustrates how the database can be used for working in an interactional linguistic perspective, including multimodality (“oh lĂ  là”); the other concerns a research combining data and metadata (“trop”).The article is also the occasion of a more general assessment. The perspective on the last thirty years shows that after a period of questions came that of dilemmas. The period of questions, choices and decisions at various levels accompanied the implementation of the databases. The experience enables now to measure their undeniable contributions in terms not only of quantity of available data (and possibly dealt with supported by the tools), but also of quality of the data (as a consequence of the requirements of standardization linked to the needs of sharing the data). The period of the dilemmas leads us to wonder about the best choices to be operated today among continuing research on varied corpuses (sometimes delicate) and the requirements of the databases

    Outcome of alimentary tract duplications operated on by minimally invasive surgery: a retrospective multicenter study by the GECI (Groupe d'Etude en Coeliochirurgie Infantile).

    BACKGROUND: Alimentary tract duplications (ATD) are a rare cause of intestinal obstruction in childhood. There are many case reports but few series about laparoscopy or thoracoscopy for ATD. The aim of our study was to report the outcome of minimally invasive surgery (MIS) for ATD. METHODS: This was a retrospective multicenter study from the GECI (Groupe d\u27Etude en Coeliochirurgie Infantile). We reviewed the charts of 114 patients operated on by MIS for ATD from 1994 to 2009. RESULTS: Sixty-two patients (54 %) had a prenatal diagnosis. Forty-nine patients (43 %) were symptomatic before surgery: 33 of those patients (63 %) with postnatal diagnosis compared to 16 (25 %) with prenatal diagnosis (P < 0.01). In this last group, the median age at onset of symptoms was 16 days (range = 0-972). One hundred and two patients had laparoscopy (esophageal to rectal duplications) and 12 patients had thoracoscopy for esophageal duplications. The mean operative time was 90 min (range = 82-98). There were 32 (28 %) resection anastomoses, 55 (48 %) enucleations, and 27 (24 %) unroofings. The conversion rate was 32 %, and in a multivariate analysis, it was significantly higher, up to 41 % for patients weighing <10 kg (P < 0.01). Ten patients (8 %) had unintentional perioperative opening of the digestive tract during the dissection. Eight patients had nine postoperative complications, including six small bowel obstructions. The median length of hospital stay was 4 days (range = 1-21) without conversion and 6 days (range = 1-27) with conversion (P = 0.01). The median follow-up was 3 months (range = 1-120). Eighteen of the 27 patients who underwent partial surgery had an ultrasound examination during follow-up. Five (18 %) of them had macroscopic residue. CONCLUSION: This study showed that MIS for ATD is feasible with a low rate of complications. Patients with prenatal diagnosis should have prompt surgery to prevent symptoms, despite a high rate of conversion in small infants

The aim was to make possible experimentation and analysis of data for institutes, which otherwise could not be realized due to lack of resources.
