This work proposes a new approach for automatic fingerprint recognition. Differently from traditional techniques, based on the analysis of peculiarities existing in fingerprint patterns and dedicated search algorithms for that purpose, it is suggested a methodology centred in signal representation tools and connectionist classification models. Basically, the methodology proposed here supports itself in two main techniques: the FBI’s Wavelet Scalar Quantization standard for fingerprint image compression as method for the feature extraction; and Artificial Neural Networks models that use linear training techniques as method for the classification of the resulting patterns. The main objective of the suggested method is the development of a recognition system independent from specific fingerprint image analysis techniques, looking for low false acceptance and false rejection rates, with priority for the false acceptance rate. The methodologies and results achieved in the executed experiments are presented, as well as their respective analysis and yet some proposals for future work and enhancements. Some aspects pertinent to the image acquisition hardware and some digital image processing techniques are also presented.CNPq, CAPESEste trabalho propõe uma nova abordagem para o reconhecimento automático de impressões digitais.

Funding Information: This research was supported by research found ICBAS-PDBiomedical Sciences-200203100 and Portuguese League Against Cancer—Northern Branch (LPCC-NRN).Genetic factors are among the major contributors to athletic performance. Although more than 150 genetic variants have been correlated with elite athlete status, genetic foundations of competition-facilitating behavior influencing elite performances are still scarce. This is the first study designed to examine the distribution of genetic determinants in the athletic performance of elite rink-hockey players. A total of 116 of the world’s top best rink-hockey players (28.2 ± 8.7 years old; more than 50% are cumulatively from the best four world teams and the best five Portuguese teams), who participated at the elite level in the National Rink-Hockey Championship in Portugal, were evaluated in anthropometric indicators/measurements, training conditions, sport experience and sport injuries history. Seven genetic polymorphisms were analyzed. Polymorphism genotyping was performed using the TaqMan® Allelic Discrimination Methodology. Rink-hockey players demonstrated significantly different characteristics according to sex, namely anthropometrics, training habits, sports injuries and genetic variants, such as Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) rs731236 (p < 0.05). The Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase (FAAH) rs324420 A allele was significantly associated with improved athletic performance (AA/AC vs. CC, OR = 2.80; 95% Cl, 1.23–6.35; p = 0.014; p = 0.008 after Bootstrap) and confirmed as an independent predictor among elite rink-hockey players (adjusted OR = 2.88; 95% Cl, 1.06–7.80; p = 0.038). Our results open an interesting link from FAAH-related biology to athletic performance.publishersversionpublishe

Circulating inflammatory mediators and organ dysfunction after cardiovascular surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass: a prospective observational study

    Get PDF
INTRODUCTION: Cardiovascular surgery with cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has improved in past decades, but inflammatory activation in this setting is still unpredictable and is associated with several postoperative complications. Perioperative levels of macrophage migration inhibitory factor (MIF) and other inflammatory mediators could be implicated in adverse outcomes in cardiac surgery. METHODS: Serum levels of MIF, monocyte chemoattractant protein (MCP)-1, soluble CD40 ligand, IL-6 and IL-10 from 93 patients subjected to CPB were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and compared with specific and global postoperative organ dysfunctions through multiple organ dysfunction score (MODS) and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA). RESULTS: Most of the cytokines measured had a peak of production between 3 and 6 hours after CPB, but maximum levels of MIF occurred earlier, at the cessation of CPB. Among specific organ dysfunctions, the most frequent was hematological, occurring in 82% of the patients. Circulatory impairment was observed in 73.1% of the patients, and 51% of these needed inotropics or vasopressors within the first 24 hours after surgery. The third most frequent dysfunction was pulmonary, occurring in 48.4% of the patients. Preoperative levels of MIF showed a relevant direct correlation with the intensity of global organ dysfunction measured by SOFA (ρ = 0.46, p < 0.001) and MODS (ρ = 0.50, p < 0.001) on the third day after surgery. MCP-1 production was associated with postoperative thrombocytopenia, and MIF was related to the use of a high dose of vasopressors in patients with cardiovascular impairment and also to lower values of the ratio of partial arterial oxygen tension (PaO(2)) to fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO(2)) registered in the first 24 hours after CPB. CONCLUSION: Despite the multifactorial nature of specific or multiple organ dysfunctions, MIF should be explored as a predicting factor of organ dysfunction, or even as a potential therapeutic target in decreasing postoperative complications

Cancer treatment has been constantly improved to cause the least possible harm to the patient. New therapies are being researched, many of them having as object of scientific-academic and pharmacological research the use of cyanogenic plants and their antitumor chemical compounds that can bring benefits to human health, having the potential to be associated with the magnetic Field and thus achieve a better benefit and with reduced adverse effects in cancer treatment. This study aimed to review the effect of cyanogenic substances and magnetic Field on tumor evolution in the literature. The integrative review of the literature was carried out in the databases EMBASE, PUBMED, LILACS, VHL, SCOPUS and MEDLINE. A final sample of 14 scientific articles, published from 2011 to 2020, was obtained, highlighting that cyanogenic substances and the magnetic Field can help reduce tumors. The most common studies were on the magnetic Field, and the studies were carried out mainly in vitro, with a frequency of 50 Hz that stood out from the others. Among the cyanogenic substances, the most prevalent was tonsillin, with the most used dosage of 10mg / ml. It was possible to conclude that both the magnetic Field and cyanogenic substances can reduce tumors

Canine babesiosis is a hemoparasitosis caused by a protozoan of the genusBabesia spp., that parasitize the erythrocytes of infected animals. This study aimed to analyze the hematological and epidemiological profile of dogs diagnosed with babesiosis, through visualization in blood smear ofmerozoitesinside erythrocytes, in the city of Fortaleza/CE, for five years (2015 to 2019). During the period, 38 affected dogs were observed. The second half, the dry period, was the one with the highest number of cases (60.5%). A higher frequency was observed in male dogs (57.8%), mixed breed (57.8%) under one year of age (73.6%). The most frequent hematological changes were thrombocytopenia (86.8%) and anemia (81.5%). In these cases, it is suggested to include babesiosis as a differential diagnosis. Despite the low sensitivity, the search for hemoparasites in the blood smear can be used in the clinical routine.
