Evaluation of a putatively very high yielding "miracle" spring wheat
Non-Peer ReviewedA supposedly very high yielding branched spike wheat (BSW) was shown to yield as much as 75 % less than standard Canada Western Red Spring (CWRS) cultivars when severely infected with leaf and stem rust. With little or no disease pressure BSW still yielded 25-30% less than semi-dwarf wheat cultivars under both dryland and irrigated conditions. The BSW was very tall and later maturing than HY 320. Kernel and quality characteristics of BSW would appear to limit its market potential regardless of yield

FAIR Practices in Africa
This article investigates expansion of the Internet of FAIR Data and Services (IFDS) to Africa, through the three GO FAIR pillars: GO CHANGE, GO BUILD and GO TRAIN. Introduction of the IFDS in Africa has a focus on digital health. Two examples of introducing FAIR are compared: a regional initiative for digital health by governments in the East Africa Community (EAC) and an initiative by a local health provider (Solidarmed) in collaboration with Great Zimbabwe University in Zimbabwe. The obstacles to introducing FAIR are identified as underrepresentation of data from Africa in IFDS at this moment, the lack of explicit recognition of situational context of research in FAIR at present and the lack of acceptability of FAIR as a foreign and European invention which affects acceptance. It is envisaged that FAIR has an important contribution to solve fragmentation in digital health in Africa, and that any obstacles concerning African participation, context relevance and acceptance of IFDS need to be removed. This will require involvement of African researchers and ICT-developers so that it is driven by local ownership. Assessment of ecological validity in FAIR principles would ensure that the context specificity of research is reflected in the FAIR principles. This will help enhance the acceptance of the FAIR Guidelines in Africa and will help strengthen digital health research and services. Computer Systems, Imagery and Medi
Rotational Cooling of Polar Molecules by Stark-tuned Cavity Resonance
A general scheme for rotational cooling of diatomic heteronuclear molecules
is proposed. It uses a superconducting microwave cavity to enhance the
spontaneous decay via Purcell effect. Rotational cooling can be induced by
sequentially tuning each rotational transition to cavity resonance, starting
from the highest transition level to the lowest using an electric field.
Electrostatic multipoles can be used to provide large confinement volume with
essentially homogeneous background electric field.Comment: 10 pages, 6 figure
Unified dark energy models : a phenomenological approach
A phenomenological approach is proposed to the problem of universe
accelerated expansion and of the dark energy nature. A general class of models
is introduced whose energy density depends on the redshift in such a way
that a smooth transition among the three main phases of the universe evolution
(radiation era, matter domination, asymptotical de Sitter state) is naturally
achieved. We use the estimated age of the universe, the Hubble diagram of Type
Ia Supernovae and the angular size - redshift relation for compact and
ultracompact radio structures to test whether the model is in agreement with
astrophysical observation and to constrain its main parameters. Although
phenomenologically motivated, the model may be straightforwardly interpreted as
a two fluids scenario in which the quintessence is generated by a suitably
chosen scalar field potential. On the other hand, the same model may also be
read in the context of unified dark energy models or in the framework of
modified Friedmann equation theories.Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication on Physical Review
Engineering the Photonic Density of States with metamaterials
The photonic density of states (PDOS), like its' electronic coun- terpart, is
one of the key physical quantities governing a variety of phenom- ena and hence
PDOS manipulation is the route to new photonic devices. The PDOS is
conventionally altered by exploiting the resonance within a device such as a
microcavity or a bandgap structure like a photonic crystal. Here we show that
nanostructured metamaterials with hyperbolic dispersion can dramatically
enhance the photonic density of states paving the way for metamaterial based
PDOS engineering
