Simulation of the Mechanical Characteristics of a Granular Matter Tested under Biaxial Loading
The mechanical characteristics of granular matter tested under biaxial loading are studied by numerical simulation. The stress-strain process, volume strain, coordination number, and shear zone are analyzed. The results indicate that the shear zone develops along with the coordination number and volume strain. With an increase in strain, the shear zone is centralized gradually. Moreover, the force transfer in the granular matter is also discussed.Выполнено численное моделирование механических характеристик гранулята, испытуемого в условиях двухосного нагружения. Neutron Scattering Study of Crystal Field Energy Levels and Field Dependence of the Magnetic Order in Superconducting HoNi2B2C
Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering measurements have been carried out
to investigate the magnetic properties of superconducting (Tc~8K) HoNi2B2C. The
inelastic measurements reveal that the lowest two crystal field transitions out
of the ground state occurat 11.28(3) and 16.00(2) meV, while the transition of
4.70(9) meV between these two levels is observed at elevated temperatures. The
temperature dependence of the intensities of these transitions is consistent
with both the ground state and these higher levels being magnetic doublets. The
system becomes magnetically long range ordered below 8K, and since this
ordering energy kTN ~ 0.69meV << 11.28meV the magnetic properties in the
ordered phase are dominated by the ground-state spin dynamics only. The low
temperature structure, which coexists with superconductivity, consists of
ferromagnetic sheets of Ho{3+ moments in the a-b plane, with the sheets coupled
antiferromagnetically along the c-axis. The magnetic state that initially forms
on cooling, however, is dominated by an incommensurate spiral antiferromagnetic
state along the c-axis, with wave vector qc ~0.054 A-1, in which these
ferromagnetic sheets are canted from their low temperature antiparallel
configuration by ~17 deg. The intensity for this spiral state reaches a maximum
near the reentrant superconducting transition at ~5K; the spiral state then
collapses at lower temperature in favor of the commensurate antiferromagnetic
state. We have investigated the field dependence of the magnetic order at and
above this reentrant superconducting transition. Initially the field rotates
the powder particles to align the a-b plane along the field direction,
demonstrating that the moments strongly prefer to lie within this plane due to

Backward pion-nucleon scattering
A global analysis of the world data on differential cross sections and
polarization asymmetries of backward pion-nucleon scattering for invariant
collision energies above 3 GeV is performed in a Regge model. Including the
, , and trajectories, we
reproduce both angular distributions and polarization data for small values of
the Mandelstam variable , in contrast to previous analyses. The model
amplitude is used to obtain evidence for baryon resonances with mass below 3
GeV. Our analysis suggests a resonance with a mass of 2.83 GeV as
member of the trajectory from the corresponding Chew-Frautschi

Species’ life-history traits explain interspecific variation in reservoir competence: a possible mechanism underlying the dilution effect
Hosts species for multi-host pathogens show considerable variation in the species' reservoir competence, which is usually used to measure species' potential to maintain and transmit these pathogens. Although accumulating research has proposed a trade-off between life-history strategies and immune defences, only a few studies extended this to host species' reservoir competence. Using a phylogenetic comparative approach, we studied the relationships between some species' life-history traits and reservoir competence in three emerging infectious vector-borne disease systems, namely Lyme disease, West Nile Encephalitis (WNE) and Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE). The results showed that interspecific variation in reservoir competence could be partly explained by the species' life histories. Species with larger body mass (for hosts of Lyme disease and WNE) or smaller clutch size (for hosts of EEE) had a higher reservoir competence. Given that both larger body mass and smaller clutch size were linked to higher extinction risk of local populations, our study suggests that with decreasing biodiversity, species with a higher reservoir competence are more likely to remain in the community, and thereby increase the risk of transmitting these pathogens, which might be a possible mechanism underlying the dilution effect
Traveling wave solutions for a predator-prey system with Sigmoidal response function
We study the existence of traveling wave solutions for a diffusive
predator-prey system. The system considered in this paper is governed by a
Sigmoidal response function which is more general than those studied
previously. Our method is an improvement to the original method introduced in
the work of Dunbar \cite{Dunbar1,Dunbar2}. A bounded Wazewski set is used in
this work while unbounded Wazewski sets were used in \cite{Dunbar1,Dunbar2}.
The existence of traveling wave solutions connecting two equilibria is
established by using the original Wazewski's theorem which is much simpler than
the extended version in Dunbar's work
Exposure Path Perceptions and Protective Actions in Biological Water Contamination Emergencies
This study extends the Protective Action Decision Model, developed to address disaster warning responses in the context of natural hazards, to “boil water” advisories. The study examined 110 Boston residents’ and 203 Texas students’ expectations of getting sick through different exposure paths for contact with contaminated water. In addition, the study assessed respondents’ actual implementation (for residents) or behavioral expectations (for students) of three different protective actions – bottled water, boiled water, and personally chlorinated water – as well as their demo-graphic characteristics and previous experience with water contamination. The results indicate that people distinguish among the exposure paths, but the differences are small (one-third to one-half of the response scale). Nonetheless, the perceived risk from the exposure paths helps to explain why people are expected to consume (or actually consumed) bottled water rather than boiled or personally chlorinated water. Overall, these results indicate that local authorities should take care to communicate the relative risks of different exposure paths and should expect that people will respond to a boil water order primarily by consuming bottled water. Thus, they should make special efforts to increase supplies of bottled water in their communities during water contamination emergencies
Measurements of the observed cross sections for exclusive light hadrons containing at , 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV
By analyzing the data sets of 17.3, 6.5 and 1.0 pb taken,
respectively, at , 3.650 and 3.6648 GeV with the BES-II
detector at the BEPC collider, we measure the observed cross sections for
, , ,
and at the three energy
points. Based on these cross sections we set the upper limits on the observed
cross sections and the branching fractions for decay into these
