    An exploration of the assessment experiences of new academics as they engage with a community of practice in higher education

    This paper considers a phenomenological research study that attempted to explore how new academics were introduced to the assessment process within a Higher Education context. Two key educational perspectives have shaped the interpretation of the studies findings. These are Nonaka and Takeuchi’s [Nonaka, I., Takeuchi, H., 1995. The Knowledge Creating Company: How Japanese Companies Create the Dynamics of Innovation. Oxford University Press, New York] model of knowledge conversion and Lave and Wenger’s work on communities of practice (1991, 2002). Three key findings emerged from this work. Firstly, the study highlights a number of issues relating to the types of support and guidance that new academics receive. These were divided into formal and informal types that either promoted conformity or facilitated challenge. Secondly, the study suggests that the ways in which experienced academic staff communicate their assessment knowledge and interact with new academics may require further consideration. Finally, the study raises questions about the type of academic that the organisation would wish to develop

    Two-Timescale Learning Using Idiotypic Behaviour Mediation For A Navigating Mobile Robot

    A combined Short-Term Learning (STL) and Long-Term Learning (LTL) approach to solving mobile-robot navigation problems is presented and tested in both the real and virtual domains. The LTL phase consists of rapid simulations that use a Genetic Algorithm to derive diverse sets of behaviours, encoded as variable sets of attributes, and the STL phase is an idiotypic Artificial Immune System. Results from the LTL phase show that sets of behaviours develop very rapidly, and significantly greater diversity is obtained when multiple autonomous populations are used, rather than a single one. The architecture is assessed under various scenarios, including removal of the LTL phase and switching off the idiotypic mechanism in the STL phase. The comparisons provide substantial evidence that the best option is the inclusion of both the LTL phase and the idiotypic system.     Human and Non-Human Primate Intestinal FcRn Expression and Immunoglobulin G Transcytosis

    PURPOSE: To evaluate transcytosis of immunoglobulin G (IgG) by the neonatal Fc receptor (FcRn) in adult primate intestine to determine whether this is a means for oral delivery of monoclonal antibodies (mAbs). METHODS: Relative regional expression of FcRn and localization in human intestinal mucosa by RT-PCR, ELISA & immunohistochemistry. Transcytosis of full-length mAbs (sandwich ELISA-based detection) across human intestinal segments mounted in Ussing-type chambers, human intestinal (caco-2) cell monolayers grown in transwells, and serum levels after regional intestinal delivery in isoflurane-anesthetized cynomolgus monkeys. RESULTS: In human intestine, there was an increasing proximal-distal gradient of mucosal FcRn mRNA and protein expression. In cynomolgus, serum mAb levels were greater after ileum-proximal colon infusion than after administration to stomach or proximal small intestine (1–5 mg/kg). Serum levels of wild-type mAb dosed into ileum/proximal colon (2 mg/kg) were 124 ± 104 ng/ml (n = 3) compared to 48 ± 48 ng/ml (n = 2) after a non-FcRn binding variant. In vitro, mAb transcytosis in polarized caco-2 cell monolayers and was not enhanced by increased apical cell surface IgG binding to FcRn. An unexpected finding in primate small intestine, was intense FcRn expression in enteroendocrine cells (chromagranin A, GLP-1 and GLP-2 containing). CONCLUSIONS: In adult primates, FcRn is expressed more highly in distal intestinal epithelial cells. However, mAb delivery to that region results in low serum levels, in part because apical surface FcRn binding does not influence mAb transcytosis. High FcRn expression in enteroendocrine cells could provide a novel means to target mAbs for metabolic diseases after systemic administration

    The One with the Feminist Critique: Revisiting Millennial Postfeminism with Friends

    In the aftermath of its initial broadcast run, iconic millennial sitcom Friends (NBC, 1994–2004) generated some quality scholarship interrogating its politics of gender. But as a site of analysis, it remains a curious, almost structuring absence from the central canon of the first wave of feminist criticism of postfeminist culture. This absence is curious not only considering the place of Friends at the forefront of millennial popular culture but also in light of its long-term syndication in countries across the world since that time. And it is structuring in the sense that Friends was the stage on which many of the familiar tropes of postfeminism interrogated across the body of work on it appear in retrospect to have been tried and tested. This article aims to contribute toward redressing this absence through interrogation and contextualization of the series’ negotiation of a range of structuring tropes of postfeminist media discourse, and it argues for Friends as an unacknowledged ur-text of millennial postfeminism

    The development and validation of a scoring tool to predict the operative duration of elective laparoscopic cholecystectomy

    Background: The ability to accurately predict operative duration has the potential to optimise theatre efficiency and utilisation, thus reducing costs and increasing staff and patient satisfaction. With laparoscopic cholecystectomy being one of the most commonly performed procedures worldwide, a tool to predict operative duration could be extremely beneficial to healthcare organisations. Methods: Data collected from the CholeS study on patients undergoing cholecystectomy in UK and Irish hospitals between 04/2014 and 05/2014 were used to study operative duration. A multivariable binary logistic regression model was produced in order to identify significant independent predictors of long (> 90 min) operations. The resulting model was converted to a risk score, which was subsequently validated on second cohort of patients using ROC curves. Results: After exclusions, data were available for 7227 patients in the derivation (CholeS) cohort. The median operative duration was 60 min (interquartile range 45–85), with 17.7% of operations lasting longer than 90 min. Ten factors were found to be significant independent predictors of operative durations > 90 min, including ASA, age, previous surgical admissions, BMI, gallbladder wall thickness and CBD diameter. A risk score was then produced from these factors, and applied to a cohort of 2405 patients from a tertiary centre for external validation. This returned an area under the ROC curve of 0.708 (SE = 0.013, p  90 min increasing more than eightfold from 5.1 to 41.8% in the extremes of the score. Conclusion: The scoring tool produced in this study was found to be significantly predictive of long operative durations on validation in an external cohort. As such, the tool may have the potential to enable organisations to better organise theatre lists and deliver greater efficiencies in care

    Perhaps not immediately considered the crown jewels of our collections-rich and research-focused university library systems, undergraduate libraries are well-positioned to grow in importance moving forward, as large universities are challenged to deepen their commitment to holistic undergraduate student support, through academics, extracurriculars, and service, and all at scale. The undergraduate library’s historic focus on teaching, learning spaces, and community enables an ideal setting to experiment with collaborative partnerships that cut across departmental divisions. By establishing and fostering a new normal of interdisciplinary, collaborative work that both inspires change among campus departments and models partnership for our users, undergraduate libraries and librarians can provide leadership for their institutions

    This chapter details how the Undergraduate Student Success team at the University of Washington’s Odegaard Library designed new student-focused programming and created a program of outreach assessment to demonstrate value and impact. The chapter describes the outreach and assessment planning processes, the creation of a flexible outreach assessment toolkit, the qualitative and quantitative assessment methods employed, the results of our assessment program, and the best practices that emerged. This assessment project requires staff time and resources, ongoing project management, and several months of collection and analysis of data, but is highly replicable in a variety of institutional contexts

    An Assessment of Maternal Health Issues in Two Villages in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa

    The fifth Millennium Development Goal of improving maternal health was placed on the international agenda and endorsed by global leaders at the Millennium Summit held in 2000. The aim of this baseline study was to conduct a situational analysis of key maternal health issues in two rural Eastern Cape villages in South Africa: Glenmore and Ndwayana. Ten focus group discussions were conducted with village leaders, community health workers and three different women self-help groups from Glenmore and Ndwayana, with five to eight voluntary participants in each focus group discussion. One of the themes highlighted was inadequate service delivery of ambulance services, which frequently failed to timeously reach expectant mothers in urgent need of transportation to a referral hospital. Adolescent pregnancy was highlighted as the maternal health issue of most concern to the community participants. In this context, a consensus was reached to design and implement an educational intervention to address adolescent pregnancy, which will form the focus of the next phase of this project

    The University of Washington recently completed an award-­‐winning $16 million renovation of the Odegaard Undergraduate Library that includes two state of the art Active Learning Classrooms (ALCs). The classrooms are designed to encourage student engagement and active learning. A major goal of the assessment project for 2013-­‐14 was to understand what challenges and opportunities for teaching and learning instructors and students would perceive in these new environments.University Librarie
