    Competitor recruitment : theory and practice-based explorations

    This dissertation deals with the reasons for, and characteristics and consequences of Competitor Recruitment (CR), i.e. poaching employee(s) from rival firms from the perspective of the hiring firm. Major conclusions are that CR often concerns individuals or teams of middle or higher managers and specialists, is done both directly or indirectly with the help of a personnel search firm, and may pay off when driven by motives, such as the need for industry-specific human capital or a fast integration process. Whether the hiring firm can finally appropriate the expected human capital value depends on the fit between the recruit and the new organizational environment, and required employee deployment practices post-hire

    Genetic parameters of fillet fatty acids and fat deposition in gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata) using the novel 30 k Medfish SNP array

    Lipid-related traits are important candidates for a breeding goal for gilthead seabream, because they affect both fish and human health, as well as production efficiency. However, to date there have been very few estimates of genetic parameters for these traits, and the genetic relationship between fatty acids and other important traits have never been reported for gilthead seabream. Therefore, the aim of this study was to estimate genomic heritability and genetic relationships of fat deposition traits and individual muscle fatty acids in a commercial population of gilthead seabream using the novel ~30 k MedFish SNP array. In total 967 gilthead seabream fed with a commercial feed were genotyped with the MedFish SNP chip which included ~30 K informative markers for this species. On average, the fish weighed 372 g. The mean content of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) + docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) was 822 mg per 100 g fillet. The heritability of muscle fat, viscera weight and percentage viscera were in the range of 0.34–0.46. The genetic correlation of body weight with muscle fat was 0.12, indicating that genetic variation in muscle fat is largely independent of the weight of the fish. The heritability of the product of endogenous fatty acid synthesis (n = 240), palmitoleic acid (16:1n-7), was high (0.43). The estimated heritability of EPA (%) and DHA (%) was 0.39 and 0.33, respectively. Both EPA and DHA had low, non-significant genetic correlations with body weight, and DHA had a negative genetic correlation with muscle fat (−0.53). It is possible to increase EPA and DHA content in gilthead seabream fillets by selective breeding. The high heritability of 16:1n-7, a marker of de novo lipogenesis, suggests that there is a strong genetic component to this metabolic pathway in gilthead seabream. Muscle fat deposition and body weight seem to be independent traits, and selective breeding for faster growth is not likely to influence the proportional content of EPA and DHA

    Charmless Bs→PP,PV,VVB_s\to PP, PV, VV Decays Based on the six-quark Effective Hamiltonian with Strong Phase Effects II

    We provide a systematic study of charmless Bs→PP,PV,VVB_s \to PP, PV, VV decays (PP and VV denote pseudoscalar and vector mesons, respectively) based on an approximate six-quark operator effective Hamiltonian from QCD. The calculation of the relevant hard-scattering kernels is carried out, the resulting transition form factors are consistent with the results of QCD sum rule calculations. By taking into account important classes of power corrections involving "chirally-enhanced" terms and the vertex corrections as well as weak annihilation contributions with non-trivial strong phase, we present predictions for the branching ratios and CP asymmetries of BsB_s decays into PP, PV and VV final states, and also for the corresponding polarization observables in VV final states. It is found that the weak annihilation contributions with non-trivial strong phase have remarkable effects on the observables in the color-suppressed and penguin-dominated decay modes. In addition, we discuss the SU(3) flavor symmetry and show that the symmetry relations are generally respected

    P-wave excited baryons from pion- and photo-induced hyperon production

    We report evidence for N(1710)P11N(1710)P_{11}, N(1875)P11N(1875)P_{11}, N(1900)P13N(1900)P_{13}, Δ(1600)P33\Delta(1600)P_{33}, Δ(1910)P31\Delta(1910)P_{31}, and Δ(1920)P33\Delta(1920)P_{33}, and find indications that N(1900)P13N(1900)P_{13} might have a companion state at 1970\,MeV. The controversial Δ(1750)P31\Delta(1750)P_{31} is not seen. The evidence is derived from a study of data on pion- and photo-induced hyperon production, but other data are included as well. Most of the resonances reported here were found in the Karlsruhe-Helsinki (KH84) and the Carnegie-Mellon (CM) analyses but were challenged recently by the Data Analysis Center at GWU. Our analysis is constrained by the energy independent πN\pi N scattering amplitudes from either KH84 or GWU. The two πN\pi N amplitudes from KH84 or GWU, respectively, lead to slightly different πN\pi N branching ratios of contributing resonances but the debated resonances are required in both series of fits.Comment: 22 pages, 28 figures.     Diet of two syntopic species of Crenuchidae (Ostariophysi: Characiformes) in an Amazonian rocky stream

    Abstract This study assessed the diet of two poorly known syntopic fish species of the family Crenuchidae, Characidium aff. declivirostre and Leptocharacidium omospilus, in a Presidente Figueiredo´ rocky stream, Amazonas, Brazil. The stomach contents were analyzed and their Frequency of Occurrence (FO %) and Relative Volume (Vol %) were combined in a Feeding Index (IAi). We examined 20 individuals of C. aff. declivirostre and 23 of L. omospilus. The Morisita-Horn Index was used to estimate the overlap between the diets of these species. Immature insects were the most valuable items consumed by both fish species. The diet of C. aff. declivirostre was mainly composed of larvae and pupae of Chironomidae, while L. omospilus predominantly consumed larvae of Hydroptilidae, Hydropyschidae and Pyralidae. Thus, both species were classified as autochthonous insectivorous. Characidium aff. declivirostre was considered a more specialized species, probably reflecting lower feeding plasticity or the use of more restricted microhabitats compared to L. omospilus. When the food items were analyzed at the family taxonomic level, the diet overlap between these species was considered moderate (Morisita-Horn Index = 0.4). However, a more thorough analysis, at the genus level, indicates a very low diet overlap. Therefore, we conclude that the feeding segregation between C. aff. declivirostre and L. omospilus may favor their co-existence, despite their high phylogenetic closeness

    We present a measurement of the deuteron spin-dependent structure function g1d based on the data collected by the COMPASS experiment at CERN during the years 2002-2004. The data provide an accurate evaluation for Gamma_1^d, the first moment of g1d(x), and for the matrix element of the singlet axial current, a0. The results of QCD fits in the next to leading order (NLO) on all g1 deep inelastic scattering data are also presented. They provide two solutions with the gluon spin distribution function Delta G positive or negative, which describe the data equally well. In both cases, at Q^2 = 3 (GeV/c)^2 the first moment of Delta G is found to be of the order of 0.2 - 0.3 in absolute value.Comment: fits redone using MRST2004 instead of MRSV1998 for G(x), correlation matrix adde

    A new measurement of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries on a transversely polarised deuteron target

    New high precision measurements of the Collins and Sivers asymmetries of charged hadrons produced in deep-inelastic scattering of muons on a transversely polarised 6LiD target are presented. The data were taken in 2003 and 2004 with the COMPASS spectrometer using the muon beam of the CERN SPS at 160 GeV/c. Both the Collins and Sivers asymmetries turn out to be compatible with zero, within the present statistical errors, which are more than a factor of 2 smaller than those of the published COMPASS results from the 2002 data. The final results from the 2002, 2003 and 2004 runs are compared with naive expectations and with existing model calculations.Comment: 40 pages, 28 figure
