In recent years the most advanced societies are beginning to rethink the principles applied in river management methods. This shift in the way we think about our river heritage is what is called in this paper: fluvial thought. This thinking implies overthrowing incomplete or erroneous ideas about what is a river and acknowledge it as a dynamic natural system. But the fluvial thought also invites discussion on how to conserve and restore rivers. In this sense, the fluvial geomorphology emerges like the basic science for designing conservation plans and restoration (geo-restoration). In fact, over the last two decades the interest in fluvial geomorphic processes has left the purely scientific level, becoming a line of applied research useful for territorial management.
Safeguarding Health at the Workplace: A Study of Work Engagement, Authenticity and Subjective Wellbeing among Religious Workers
: Research in work and organizational psychology has paid little attention to religious workers, something certainly surprising as faith-based organizations play a key role in the welfare state of many countries. This research shows that religious workers in a Catholic order present a high degree of subjective wellbeing, both in terms of flourishing and satisfaction with life in general,
and a positive balance of positive and negative feelings. More specifically, this study examines the relationship between authenticity and wellbeing amongst religious workers. Survey responses from 142 religious workers in Spain were analyzed using partial least squares path modelling. The results reveal that subjective wellbeing at work is positively related to authenticity. In addition, this relationship is mediated by their level of work engagement
SIBILA: A novel interpretable ensemble of general-purpose machine learning models applied to medical contexts
Personalized medicine remains a major challenge for scientists. The rapid
growth of Machine learning and Deep learning has made them a feasible al-
ternative for predicting the most appropriate therapy for individual patients.
However, the need to develop a custom model for every dataset, the lack of
interpretation of their results and high computational requirements make many
reluctant to use these methods. Aiming to save time and bring light to the way
models work internally, SIBILA has been developed. SIBILA is an ensemble of
machine learning and deep learning models that applies a range of
interpretability algorithms to identify the most relevant input features. Since
the interpretability algo- rithms may not be in line with each other, a
consensus stage has been imple- mented to estimate the global attribution of
each variable to the predictions. SIBILA is containerized to be run on any
high-performance computing plat- form. Although conceived as a command-line
tool, it is also available to all users free of charge as a web server at
https://bio-hpc.ucam.edu/sibila. Thus, even users with few technological skills
can take advantage of it. SIBILA has been applied to two medical case studies
to show its ability to predict in classification problems. Even though it is a
general-purpose tool, it has been developed with the aim of becoming a powerful
decision-making tool for clinicians, but can actually be used in many other
domains. Thus, other two non-medical examples are supplied as supplementary
material to prove that SIBILA still works well with noise and in regression
problems.Comment: 23 pages, 4 figures, 6 tables, 2 equation
A lithotopo unit definition proposal is made for Galicia. A lithotopo unit will be defined as a sector with equal topography and lithology, therefore, as an area where the ecological processes display similar behaviours. This definition allows the segmentation of rivers as well as the classification of fluvial systems. The lithotopo units have been developed from cartographic analysis, using multivariate techniques for two variables: topography (elevation, slope and roughness) and lithology. Next, several geomorphic parameters (channel slope, hydraulic radius, width/depth ratio of the channel, sediment median size and specific power) were measured in twenty-three working sectors along the Cabe River (Lugo, NW Spain) which encompass different lithotopo units. The results show that the geomorphic descriptors for each lithotopo unit vary within a similar range of values. This range is enough to allow their identification as internally homogeneous and mutually distinguishable units. The territorial mapping into lithotopo units makes it easier both to implement management measuresand to make comparisons between fluvial systems.
A Guarantee Systems Classification: The Latin American Experience
Guarantee systems are financial tools designed to mitigate the dysfunctions, within credit operations, generated from the entrepreneurs’ demand for collaterals. The present work diagnoses the unwanted effects, triggered by international rules, on the access to funds by micro, small, and medium enterprises; it posits as well the guarantee systems as solutions to these specific circumstances. Thus, it examines their legal configurations, their operational features, their relation to the financial system, and the performance levels they have achieved in Latin America. This paper has deemed virtually all the existing systems so that the results are highly significant, providing an outstanding contribution of knowledge to this field of study.
This work purposes and introduces an original compilation of guarantee financial schemes, unveiling a new reality from the perspective of an empirical classification for Latin America. The set has been sorted by the different forms in which they have operated and supported the guarantee coverage on its assets or whether they have merely acted as operators and managers of an autonomous and liquid resource known as guarantee trust or fund –which is predominant within public participation schemes that not often bear the collateral coverage on their own financial equity. This classification defines and establishes diverse operational and administrative situations
On the evolution as a science of dynamic geomorphology in fluvial environments
Dicha
lÃnea del tiempo actúa también como guÃa y argumento en la lectura del textoThis paper analyses the history and development of fluvial geomorphology in dynamic
environments. The goal of the study is to organize the past events that have been making up
the body of what this science is now. The established timeline is divided into different stages,
each of which is defined by its own characteristics resulting in a particular way to conceive
of and practice science; the timeline also serves to guide the reading of this textS
