In the presented study a special test-pump with 2D curvature blade geometry in cavitating and non-cavitating conditions was investigated using different experimental techniques and a 3D numerical model of cavitating flows. Experimental and numerical results concerning pump characteristics and performance breakdown were compared at different flow conditions. Appearing types of cavitation and the spatial distribution of vapour structures within the runner were also analysed

In the presented study a special test pump with two-dimensional curvature blade geometry was investigated in cavitating and noncavitating conditions using different experimental techniques and a three-dimensional numerical model implemented to study cavitating flows. Experimental and numerical results concerning pump characteristics and performance breakdown were compared at different flow conditions. Appearing types of cavitation and the spatial distribution of vapor structures within the impeller were also analyzed. These results show the ability of the model to simulate the complex three-dimensional development of cavitation in a rotating machinery, and the associated effects on the performance

Through-substrate terahertz time-domain reflection spectroscopy for environmental graphene conductivity mapping

    Get PDF
We demonstrate how terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) operating in reflection geometry can be used for quantitative conductivity mapping of large area chemical vapor deposited graphene films through silicon support. We validate the technique against measurements performed using the established transmission based THz-TDS. Our through-substrate approach allows unhindered access to the graphene top surface and thus, as we discuss, opens up pathways to perform in situ and in-operando THz-TDS using environmental cells

Comprehensive characterization of a mesoporous cerium oxide nanomaterial with high surface area and high thermal stability

In the present study, the pore space of a mesoporous cerium oxide material is investigated, which forms by the self-assembly of primary particles into a spherical secondary structure possessing a disordered mesopore space. The material under study exhibits quite stable mesoporosity upon aging at high temperatures (800 °C) and is, thus, of potential interest in high-temperature catalysis. Here, different characterization techniques were applied to elucidate the structural evolution taking place between heat treatment at 400 °C and aging at 800 °C, i.e., in a water-containing atmosphere, which is usually detrimental to nanoscaled porosity. The changes in the mesoporosity were monitored by advanced physisorption experiments, including hysteresis scanning, and electron tomography analysis coupled with a 3D reconstruction of the mesopore space. These methods indicate that the 3D spatial arrangement of the primary particles during the synthesis under hydrothermal conditions via thermal hydrolysis is related to the thermal stability of the hierarchical mesopore structure. The assembly of the primary CeO2_{2} particles (∼4 nm in size) results in an interparticulate space constituting an open 3D mesopore network, as revealed by skeleton analysis of tomography data, being in conformity with hysteresis scanning. At elevated temperatures (800 °C), sinter processes occur resulting in the growth of the primary particles, but the 3D mesopore network and the spherical secondary structure are preserved

The Eighteenth Text RETrieval Conference (TREC 2009) Proceedings. Gaithersburg, Maryland, USA; 2009.This paper reports on the work that has been conducted by Fraunhofer SCAI for Trec Chemistry (Trec-Chem) track 2009. The team of Fraunhofer SCAI participated in two tasks, namely Technology Survey and Prior Art Search. The core of the framework is an index of 1.2 million chemical patents provided as a data set by Trec. For the technology survey, three runs were submitted based on semantic dictionaries and noun phrases. For the prior art search task, several elds were introduced into the index that contained normalized noun phrases, biomedical as well as chemical entities. Altogether, 36 runs were submitted for this task that were based on automatic querying with tokens, noun phrases and entities along with dierent search strategies
