Occurrence and mineral chemistry of high pressure phases, Portrillo basalt, southcentral New Mexico
Inclusions of clinopyroxenite, kaersutiteclinopyroxenite, kaersutite-rich inclusions, wehrlite and olivine-clinopyroxenite together with megacrysts of feldspar, kaersutite and spinel are found loose on the flanks of cinder cones, as inclusions within lava flows and within the cores of volcanic bombs in the Quaternary alkali-olivine basalt of the West Potrillo Mountains, southcentral New Mexico. Based on petrological and geochemical evidence the megacysts are interpreted to be phenocrysts which formed at great depth rather that xenocrysts of larger crystal aggregates. These large crystals are believed to have formed as stable phases at high temperature and pressure and have partially reacted with the basalt to produce subhedral to anhedral crystal boundaries. It can be demonstrated that the mafic and ultramafic crystal aggregates were derived from an alkali-basalt source rock generated in the mantle. The inclusions are believed to represent a cumulus body or bodies injected within the lower crust or upper mantle
Klaus Mann\u27s Mephisto: A Secret Rivalry
Critics of the 1960s and 1970s have focused their attention on Klaus Mann\u27s use of his former brother-in-law, Gustaf GrĂĽndgens, as the model for the hero of his controversial novel, Mephisto, while more recent critics have emphasized its significance as a work of anti-Fascist literature.
This essay seeks to resolve some of the apparent contradictions in Klaus Mann\u27s motivation for writing Mephisto by viewing the novel primarily in the context of his life and career. Although Mephisto is the only political satire that Klaus Mann wrote, it is consistent with his life-long tendency to use autobiographical material as the basis for much of his plot and characterization. Mann transformed his ambivalent feelings about GrĂĽndgens, which long antedated the writing of Mephisto, into a unique work of fiction which simultaneously expresses his indignation over the moral bankruptcy of the Third Reich and reveals his envy of GrĂĽndgens\u27s career successes
Electrochemical Surface Modification of Aluminium Sheets for Application to Nano-electronic Devices: Anodization Aluminium and Electrodeposition of Cobalt-Copper
A nano-porous anodized aluminium oxide layer was synthesized on the surface of bulk aluminium at a wide range of anodization voltages. The barrier layer at the pore bottom of anodized aluminium oxide layer was chemically etched to make good electrical contact for nanowires electrodeposited in the pores thus formed on metallic aluminium substrates. Cathodic polarization was examined at a wide range of cathode potentials to investigate the electrodeposition behaviour of Cu and Co into the pores. Co81Cu19/Cu multilayered nanowires were fabricated using a pulse-plating technique into the templates. Co-alloy layer and Cu layer thicknesses were adjusted to 10 nm, by controlling the deposition times. The temperature dependence of the resistance of Co81Cu19/Cu multilayered nanowires grown on the template presented clean metallic characteristics and a giant magnetoresistance (GMR) of 23% was reached at 4
Rashba spin-orbit coupling and spin precession in carbon nanotubes
The Rashba spin-orbit coupling in carbon nanotubes and its effect on
spin-dependent transport properties are analyzed theoretically. We focus on
clean non-interacting nanotubes with tunable number of subbands . The
peculiar band structure is shown to allow in principle for Datta-Das
oscillatory behavior in the tunneling magnetoresistance as a function of gate
voltage, despite the presence of multiple bands. We discuss the conditions for
observing Datta-Das oscillations in carbon nanotubes.Comment: 12 pages, published versio
Offline Signature Verification by Combining Graph Edit Distance and Triplet Networks
Biometric authentication by means of handwritten signatures is a challenging
pattern recognition task, which aims to infer a writer model from only a
handful of genuine signatures. In order to make it more difficult for a forger
to attack the verification system, a promising strategy is to combine different
writer models. In this work, we propose to complement a recent structural
approach to offline signature verification based on graph edit distance with a
statistical approach based on metric learning with deep neural networks. On the
MCYT and GPDS benchmark datasets, we demonstrate that combining the structural
and statistical models leads to significant improvements in performance,
profiting from their complementary properties

Considerations on the Castrop formula for calculation of intraocular lens power
Background: To explain the concept of the Castrop lens power calculation formula and show the application and results from a large dataset compared to classical formulae.
Methods: The Castrop vergence formula is based on a pseudophakic model eye with 4 refractive surfaces. This was compared against the SRKT, Hoffer-Q, Holladay1, simplified Haigis with 1 optimized constant and Haigis formula with 3 optimized constants. A large dataset of preoperative biometric values, lens power data and postoperative refraction data was split into training and test sets. The training data were used for formula constant optimization, and the test data for cross-validation. Constant optimization was performed for all formulae using nonlinear optimization, minimising root mean squared prediction error.
Results: The constants for all formulae were derived with the Levenberg-Marquardt algorithm. Applying these constants to the test data, the Castrop formula showed a slightly better performance compared to the classical formulae in terms of prediction error and absolute prediction error. Using the Castrop formula, the standard deviation of the prediction error was lowest at 0.45 dpt, and 95% of all eyes in the test data were within the limit of 0.9 dpt of prediction error.
Conclusion: The calculation concept of the Castrop formula and one potential option for optimization of the 3 Castrop formula constants (C, H, and R) are presented. In a large dataset of 1452 data points the performance of the Castrop formula was slightly superior to the respective results of the classical formulae such as SRKT, Hoffer-Q, Holladay1 or Haigis

Radiosensitization of HNSCC cells by EGFR inhibition depends on the induction of cell cycle arrests
The increase in cellular radiosensitivity by EGF receptor (EGFR) inhibition has been shown to be attributable to the induction of a G1-arrest in p53-proficient cells. Because EGFR targeting in combination with radiotherapy is used to treat head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) which are predominantly p53 mutated, we tested the effects of EGFR targeting on cellular radiosensitivity, proliferation, apoptosis, DNA repair and cell cycle control using a large panel of HNSCC cell lines. In these experiments EGFR targeting inhibited signal transduction, blocked proliferation and induced radiosensitization but only in some cell lines and only under normal (pre-plating) conditions. This sensitization was not associated with impaired DNA repair (53BP1 foci) or induction of apoptosis. However, it was associated with the induction of a lasting G2-arrest. Both, the radiosensitization and the G2-arrest were abrogated if the cells were re-stimulated (delayed plating) with actually no radiosensitization being detectable in any of the 14 tested cell lines. Therefore we conclude that EGFR targeting can induce a reversible G2 arrest in p53 deficient HNSCC cells, which does not consequently result in a robust cellular radiosensitization. Together with recent animal and clinical studies our data indicate that EGFR inhibition is no effective strategy to increase the radiosensitivity of HNSCC cells.</p
