    Constraints on Omega_Lambda and Omega_m from Distant Type 1a Supernovae and Cosmic Microwave Background Anisotropies

    We perform a combined likelihood analysis of the latest cosmic microwave background anisotropy data and distant Type 1a Supernova data of Perlmutter etal (1998a). Our analysis is restricted to cosmological models where structure forms from adiabatic initial fluctuations characterised by a power-law spectrum with negligible tensor component. Marginalizing over other parameters, our best fit solution gives Omega_m = 0.25 (+0.18, -0.12) and Omega_Lambda = 0.63 (+0.17, -0.23) (95 % confidence errors) for the cosmic densities contributed by matter and a cosmological constant respectively. The results therefore strongly favour a nearly spatially flat Universe with a non-zero cosmological constant.Comment: 6 pages, 6 Postscript figures, uses mn.sty. submitted to MNRA

    Distribution patterns of HP1, a heterochromatin-associated nonhistone chromosomal protein of Drosophila

    We have previously reported the identification of a nonhistone chromosomal protein (nhcp-19; now called HP1) preferentially associated with the heterochromatin of Drosophila melanogaster. A detailed study of the HP1 distribution pattern on polytene chromosomes by immunofluorescent staining, using monoclonal antibody C1A9, has been carried out. The results indicate that this protein is found within the centric beta-heterochromatin, in cytological regions 31, 41 and 80, and throughout polytene chromosome 4. Staining of telomeres is frequently observed, those of chromosome arms 2R and 3R and the X chromosome being the most conspicuous. Analysis of a fourth chromosome insertional translocation T(3;4)f/In(3L)P confirms an autonomous interaction with chromosome 4 material. Similarly, the beta-heterochromatin distal to light on chromosome arm 2L, moved to position 97D2 on chromosome arm 3R in the rearrangement ltx13, is prominently stained using the C1A9 antibody. Staining of intact salivary glands indicates that this rearranged segment of beta-heterochromatin is not associated with the polytene chromocenter, but provides an independent structural reference point. HP1 is not observed in the nuclei of the early syncytial embryo, but becomes concentrated in the nuclei at the syncytial blastoderm stage (ca. nuclear division cycle 10). This suggests that heterochromatin formation occurs at approximately the same stage at which nuclei first become transcriptionally competent. Thus, the C1A9 antibody may serve as a useful marker for both structural and functional studies of the Drosophila nucleus

    Mathematics teacher quality has become a major focus in national education reform efforts. In addition, there is an increasing interest in the effectiveness of teacher preparation programs and the undergraduate preparation of elementary mathematics teachers. Empirical evidence suggests that teacher attitudes, behaviors and values, or dispositions, towards teaching have a significant impact on student outcomes. The purpose of this study is to survey juniors and seniors in an undergraduate teacher preparation program to gauge their perceptions of self-efficacy and comfort with teaching mathematics. The results have implications for, and reaffirm concerns about the undergraduate preparation of elementary mathematics teachers

    The efficacy of group delivered mentalization-based parenting interventions: a systematic review of the literature

    Mentalization refers to the capacity to understand and interpret oneā€™s own and others mental states. There is good evidence for individualised treatments aimed at increasing this capacity with children and adolescents. However, there has been no focused synthesis of the literature concerning specifically group delivered mentalization-based parenting interventions. The current study aimed to systematically review the literature in relation to group delivered mentalization-based parenting interventions. Three databases were searched to identify N=515 studies that were screened and reported according to PRISMA guidelines. Inclusion criteria were met by N=10 studies. Interventions varied in terms of content, but often included psychoeducation, experiential group exercises and homework tasks. The length and setting of interventions did not appear to influence outcomes. Significant improvements in parental reflective functioning were found in eight of the ten studies. There was mixed evidence for the efficacy in terms of other parental and child outcomes. This may be due to the lack of high quality studies and the absence of longer-term follow-ups. There is a need for future research to conduct high quality studies with greater diversity in participating parents and long-term follow-up

    Iron deficiency anaemia (IDA) is a worldwide healthcare problem affecting approximately 25% of the global population. The most common IDA treatment is oral iron supplementation, which has been associated with gastrointestinal (GI) side effects such as constipation and bloating. These can result in treatment non-adherence and the persistence of IDA. Intravenous iron does not cause GI side effects, which may be due to the lack of exposure to the intestinal lumen. Luminal iron can cause changes to the gut microbiota, aiding the promotion of pathogenic species and decreasing beneficial protective species. Iron is vital for methanogenic archaea, which rely on iron for growth and metabolism. Increased intestinal methane has been associated with slowing of intestinal transit, constipation, and bloating. Here we explore the literature to understand a potential link between iron and methanogenesis as a novel way to understand the mechanism of oral iron supplementation induced GI side effects

    Teaching higher education staff to understand and support autistic students: evaluation of a novel training program

    BackgroundAutistic students are particularly vulnerable to stressors within a university environment and are more likely to experience poor mental health than their non-autistic peers. Studentsā€™ experiences of stigma from staff and peers, and the masking behaviors they deploy to minimize it, can also result in worsening mental health. Despite these concerns, there is a lack of tailored support for autistic students at university. The current project assesses a co-created training course for university staff focused on debunking stereotypes, educating about the autistic experience at university, mental health presentation among autistic individuals, and practical strategies to improve interactions with autistic students.MethodsThe Autism Stigma and Knowledge Questionnaire [ASK-Q] was administered before and after the training, to examine changes in traineesā€™ understanding and acceptance of autism and autistic people. Post-training interviews and surveys were also conducted with trainees, covering the impact the training has had on their perceptions of autism, the strategies they found beneficial, and how they will use the materials in future.ResultsThere were no statistically significant differences between pre- and post-training scores on the ASK-Q, likely due to ceiling effects as pre-training scores were high. Thematic analysis of interviews identified five themes: value of lived experience; developing nuanced, in-depth knowledge of autism; training as acceptable and feasible; links to professional practice; and systemic barriers.ConclusionAlthough ceiling effects meant there were no changes to participantā€™s knowledge about autism and autistic people statistically, the qualitative data reveals the extensive benefits they gained from taking part in the training programs. Scoring highly on the ASK-Q did not mean that people could not learn important new information and benefit from the course. This more nuanced understanding of autism led to practical changes in their practice. Listening to and learning from autistic people was seen as particularly important, highlighting the value of co-production. Our results also emphasize the need for varied approaches to evaluating training effectiveness, as reliance on quantitative data alone would have missed the subtler, but impactful, changes our participants experienced. This has important implications for professional practice, both within higher education and more broadly

    Morpho-functional evaluation of small bowel using wireless motility capsule and video capsule endoscopy in patients with known or suspected Crohnā€™s disease: pilot study

    Background and study aims: SmartPill(Ā®) (Given Imaging Corp.,Yoqneam,Israel) is an ingestible, non-imaging capsule that records physiological data including contractions and pH throughout the gastrointestinal tract. There are scarce data looking at SmartPill(Ā®) assessment of patients with known/suspected small-bowel Crohnā€™s Disease (CD). This pilot study aims to investigate feasibility and safety of SmartPill(Ā®) to assess gut motility in this group.ā€Š Patients and methods: Over 1 year, patients with known/suspected CD, referred for small-bowel capsule endoscopy (SBCE), were invited to participate and 12 were recruited (7 female, 5 male, mean age 44.2ā€ŠĀ±ā€Š16.6 years). They underwent hydrogen breath test to exclude small-bowel bacterial overgrowth, patency capsule (Agile(Ā®)), and provided stool samples for fecal calprotectin (FC). Patients ingested PillCam(Ā®)SB2 and SmartPill(Ā®) 4 hours apart. Using unpublished data, 33 healthy controls also were identified for the study. Pā€Š<ā€Š0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Of the 12 patients enrolled, 10 underwent complete Smartpill(Ā®) examination (1 stomach retention, 1 dropout). Pillcam(Ā®) was complete in 10 (1 dropout, 1 stomach retention). Mean fecal calprotectin was 340ā€ŠĀ±ā€Š307.71 mcg/g. The study group had longer transit times and lower gut motility index than did the controls. The difference in motility appears to be statistically significant (Pā€Š<ā€Š0.05). Longer transit times for SmartPill(Ā®) (not statistically significant) may have been due to different specifications between the capsules. Limitations included transient Smartpill(Ā®) signal loss (5/10 studies). Conclusions: This is the first pilot to attempt combining SBCE and SmartPill(Ā®) to assess small-bowel CD. Data on motility in CD are scarce. Multimodal information can provide a clearer clinical picture. Despite concerns about capsule retention in CD patients, SmartPill(Ā®) seems safe for use if a patency capsule is employed beforehand

I consider the neo-Agrarian strains within his work, as well as Bragg's responses to the globalization of the region.     Estimating the bispectrum of the Very Small Array data

    We estimate the bispectrum of the Very Small Array data from the compact and extended configuration observations released in December 2002, and compare our results to those obtained from Gaussian simulations. There is a slight excess of large bispectrum values for two individual fields, but this does not appear when the fields are combined. Given our expected level of residual point sources, we do not expect these to be the source of the discrepancy. Using the compact configuration data, we put an upper limit of 5400 on the value of f_NL, the non-linear coupling parameter, at 95 per cent confidence. We test our bispectrum estimator using non-Gaussian simulations with a known bispectrum, and recover the input values.Comment: 17 pages, 16 figures, replaced with version accepted by MNRAS.
