Stryker Osteonics: Prosthetic Knee Joint
We examine, within a simple bearing model of a knee joint that only consideres pure sliding, the effect of the presence of a small vertical hole in the load area on the fluid film properties. The calculations indicate that fluid is entrapped in such a hole, which, for constant load, causes a smaller minimal film separation of the two surfaces.
This will lower the horizontal friction, but may also bring about surface contact in high load situations
High speed video capture for mobile phone cameras
We consider an electromechanical model for the operation of a voice coil motor in a mobile phone camera, with the aim of optimizing how a lens can be moved to a desired focusing motion. Although a methodology is developed for optimizing lens shift, there is some concern about the experimentally-determined model parameters that are at our disposal. Central to the model is the value of the estimated magnetic force constant, Kf: its value determines how far it is actually possible to move lens, but it appears that, from the value given, it would not be possible to shift the lens through the displacements desired. Furthermore, earlier experiments have also estimated the value of the back EMF constant, Kg , to be roughly five times greater than Kf, even though we present two theoretical arguments that show that Kf = Kg: a conclusion supported by readily-available manufacturersâ data
Cost Optimization of Ice Distribution
Two questions regarding minimizing fuel costs while delivering ice along a pre-set route are tackled.
The first question is when demand exceeds the load of a single truck, so that a second truck of ice has to be taken to some point of the route for the driver/salesman to continue with that for the rest of the route: Is it better:
1) for the first truck to deliver starting from the costumer nearest to the base, or
2) for the first truck to start the delivery from the last costumer (the most distant from the base)?
We show that the second strategy was better for the particular data looked at, and we have the basis of an algorithm for deciding which strategy is the better for a given delivery schedule.
The second question concerns how best to modify a regular sales route when an extra delivery has to be made. Again, the basis for an algorithm to decide how to minimize fuel costs is derived
Extreme magnification of an individual star at redshift 1.5 by a galaxy-cluster lens
Galaxy-cluster gravitational lenses can magnify background galaxies by a total factor of up to ~50. Here we report an image of an individual star at redshift zâ=â1.49 (dubbed MACS J1149 Lensed Star 1) magnified by more than Ă2,000. A separate image, detected briefly 0.26âł from Lensed Star 1, is probably a counterimage of the first star demagnified for multiple years by an object of âł3 solar masses in the cluster. For reasonable assumptions about the lensing system, microlensing fluctuations in the starsâ light curves can yield evidence about the mass function of intracluster stars and compact objects, including binary fractions and specific stellar evolution and supernova models. Dark-matter subhaloes or massive compact objects may help to account for the two imagesâ long-term brightness ratio
Same data, different conclusions: Radical dispersion in empirical results when independent analysts operationalize and test the same hypothesis
In this crowdsourced initiative, independent analysts used the same dataset to test two hypotheses regarding the effects of scientistsâ gender and professional status on verbosity during group meetings. Not only the analytic approach but also the operationalizations of key variables were left unconstrained and up to individual analysts. For instance, analysts could choose to operationalize status as job title, institutional ranking, citation counts, or some combination. To maximize transparency regarding the process by which analytic choices are made, the analysts used a platform we developed called DataExplained to justify both preferred and rejected analytic paths in real time. Analyses lacking sufficient detail, reproducible code, or with statistical errors were excluded, resulting in 29 analyses in the final sample. Researchers reported radically different analyses and dispersed empirical outcomes, in a number of cases obtaining significant effects in opposite directions for the same research question. A Boba multiverse analysis demonstrates that decisions about how to operationalize variables explain variability in outcomes above and beyond statistical choices (e.g., covariates). Subjective researcher decisions play a critical role in driving the reported empirical results, underscoring the need for open data, systematic robustness checks, and transparency regarding both analytic paths taken and not taken. Implications for organizations and leaders, whose decision making relies in part on scientific findings, consulting reports, and internal analyses by data scientists, are discussed
