    Automatic laser shutdown implications for all optical data networks

    Generalized multiprotocol label switching (GMPLS), optical packet, and burst-switched networks in which the synchronous digital hierarchy/synchronous optical network (SDH/SONET) layer is removed may be rendered nonfunctional because the current standard for triggering Automatic Power Reduction (APR) cannot distinguish between a fiber that has been de-energized and a fiber failure. If this standard is applied, without modification, the likelihood of unnecessary amplifier shutdown in optical networks is significant. These shutdown events may impact large regions of the network and render optical links inoperable. To avoid unnecessary amplifier shutdown, amendments to the current operation of APR are suggested

    Monitoring of chicken meat freshness by means of a colorimetric sensor array

    A new optoelectronic nose to monitor chicken meat ageing has been developed. It is based on 16 pigments prepared by the incorporation of different dyes (pH indicators, Lewis acids, hydrogenbonding derivatives, selective probes and natural dyes) into inorganic materials (UVM-7, silica and alumina). The colour changes of the sensor array were characteristic of chicken ageing in a modi¿ed packaging atmosphere (30% CO2¿70% N2). The chromogenic array data were processed with qualitative (PCA) and quantitative (PLS) tools. The PCA statistical analysis showed a high degree of dispersion, with nine dimensions required to explain 95% of variance. Despite this high dimensionality, a tridimensional representation of the three principal components was able to differentiate ageing with 2-day intervals. Moreover, the PLS statistical analysis allows the creation of a model to correlate the chromogenic data with chicken meat ageing. The model offers a PLS prediction model for ageing with values of 0.9937, 0.0389 and 0.994 for the slope, the intercept and the regression coef¿cient, respectively, and is in agreement with the perfect ¿t between the predicted and measured values observed.     Interlinked; A New Approach to Urban Expansion in Papamoa

    New Zealand cities are prone to poor urban planning and have a strong tendency to expand out into widespread suburbs, consuming the fertile farmland and natural landscapes that reside at the fringes of urban development. These types of greenfield development are rampant throughout New Zealand. Posed as the solution to housing issues and a growing population, these developments nullify and alienate the surrounding context. Low-density urban planning is particularly damaging with its maze of curving cul-de-sacs and dead-end streets resulting in an overly complex network with little to no central framework or hierarchy. This lack of internal infrastructure puts a significant strain on static infrastructure such as roads and public transport, which struggle to meet the needs of the end user. The aim of this research is to develop an alternative strategy for urban growth in Papamoa. Located in the Bay of Plenty, Papamoa is a regional community within the Tauranga city limits, currently experiencing unprecedented growth. Current projections show development in Papamoa will exhaust current land reserves by as early as 2028, requiring the development of additional land to the south in order to sustain demand. This research aims to respond to this issue by increasing density within the existing sprawl, specifically focusing on the site of Papamoa Plaza, the original retail centre of the area. By reducing the need for greenfield development and enabling better connectivity across the region, a shift in focus of the use of public space can revitalise the existing urban centre to the benefits of connectivity within urban design. Case studies and literature were reviewed in order to assess their viability within the New Zealand context and to identify key design elements that would be used. Criteria and guiding principles were developed using Assemblage Theory and Space Syntax. Existing developmental framework and growth trends were analysed during the research, then initial design goals and strategies were identified. Using this information, several schemes and approaches were developed. These were evaluated using ‘Space Syntax’ to establish levels and patterns of connectivity. A selection process of the most viable schemes was explored in detail. These were then broken into key components that were progressively developed to generate a range of different options, which were then reflected upon, assessed and, from this, the final scheme emerged

    Economic, Energy and Carbon Footprint Impact of Australia's National Broadband Network

    This study attempts to quantify the economic and environmental impact of the National Broadband Network (NBN) being deployed in Australia. Three key features underpin the results presented in this paper. First, the economic situation in Australia in the long run without the NBN was compared with the economic situation in Australia with the NBN. Second, nowhere in the analysis was it assumed that there is a benefit in providing broadband access per se. Instead, a range of new services that have well-attested economic benefits were included. Third, the study relies on a wellfounded comparative static computable general equilibrium (CGE) economic model of the Australian economy to assess the effects of the NBN in the short and long run. We find that in a typical shortrun year during the construction of the NBN, economic activities increase predominantly in the construction and related industries. The results suggest no net increase in domestic greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the short run. In a typical long-run year post NBN deployment, the continued increase in economic activity results in GHG emissions going up more significantly than during NBN deployment. Achieving a reduction in domestic GHG emissions will require appropriate policy implementation specifically targeting GHG emissions to complement the introduction of ubiquitous broadband in the form of the NBN in Australia. Subject to the cost of domestic abatement policies and purchasing overseas permits, the environmental impact of the NBN in monetary terms can be compensated by economic welfare gains if the expected bandwidth requirements of services included in this study are sufficiently large

    A network-based model of the carbon footprint of the Internet is presented and used to determine the carbon abatement provided by Internet-based telecommuting and teleconferencing services to replace car and air travel. The model includes DSL, FTTN and PON access technologies, edge and core network architectures and is based upon currently commercially available equipment. We show that carbon emissions of the Internet need to be taken into consideration in order to obtain an accurate estimate of carbon abatement provided by the Internet
