Island dynamics and anisotropy during vapor phase epitaxy of m-plane GaN
Using in situ grazing-incidence x-ray scattering, we have measured the diffuse scattering from islands that form during layer-by-layer growth of GaN by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy on the (101⎯⎯0)(101¯0)(101¯0) m-plane surface. The diffuse scattering is extended in the (0001)(0001)(0001) in-plane direction in reciprocal space, indicating a strong anisotropy with islands elongated along [12⎯⎯10][12¯10] [12¯10] and closely spaced along [0001][0001][0001]. This is confirmed by atomic force microscopy of a quenched sample. Islands were characterized as a function of growth rate F and temperature. The island spacing along [0001][0001][0001] observed during the growth of the first monolayer obeys a power-law dependence on growth rate F−nF−nF−n, with an exponent n=0.25±0.02n=0.25±0.02n=0.25±0.02. The results are in agreement with recent kinetic Monte Carlo simulations, indicating that elongated islands result from the dominant anisotropy in step edge energy and not from surface diffusion anisotropy. The observed power-law exponent can be explained using a simple steady-state model, which gives n = 1/4
Disease characteristics, treatments, and outcomes of patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension treated with selexipag in real-world settings from the SPHERE registry (SelexiPag: tHe usErs dRug rEgistry)
BACKGROUND: Selexipag is an oral prostacyclin receptor agonist, indicated for pulmonary arterial hypertension to delay disease progression and reduce the risk of pulmonary arterial hypertension-related hospitalization. SelexiPag: tHe usErs dRug rEgistry (NCT03278002) was a US-based, prospective, real-world registry of selexipag-treated patients.
METHODS: Adults with pulmonary hypertension (enrolled 2016-2020) prescribed selexipag were followed for ≤18 months, with data collected at routine clinic visits. Patients were defined as newly or previously initiated if they had started selexipag ≤60 days or \u3e60 days, respectively, before enrollment.
RESULTS: The registry included 829 patients (430 newly initiated, 399 previously initiated; 759 with pulmonary arterial hypertension), of whom 55.6% were World Health Organization functional class (FC) 3/4; 57.3% were intermediate or high risk per Registry to Evaluate Early and Long-Term PAH Disease Management (REVEAL) 2.0. In patients with pulmonary arterial hypertension, 18-month discontinuation rates for adverse events were 22.0%, 32.0%, and 11.9%, and 18-month survival rates were 89.4%, 84.2%, and 94.5% in the overall, newly, and previously initiated patient populations, respectively. From baseline to month 18, most patients had stable or improved FC and stable or improved REVEAL 2.0 risk category status. Discontinuation for adverse events, hospitalization, and survival were similar regardless of patients\u27 individually tolerated selexipag maintenance dose. No new safety signals were identified.
CONCLUSIONS: In this real-world analysis of patients initiating selexipag, most patients had stable or improved FC and REVEAL 2.0 risk category. Similar to the GRIPHON trial, outcomes with selexipag in this real-world study were comparable across maintenance dose strata, with no new safety signals

Theoretical methods for the calculation of Bragg curves and 3D distributions of proton beams
The well-known Bragg-Kleeman rule RCSDA = A dot E0p has become a pioneer work
in radiation physics of charged particles and is still a useful tool to
estimate the range RCSDA of approximately monoenergetic protons with initial
energy E0 in a homogeneous medium. The rule is based on the
continuous-slowing-down-approximation (CSDA). It results from a generalized
(nonrelativistic) Langevin equation and a modification of the phenomenological
friction term. The complete integration of this equation provides information
about the residual energy E(z) and dE(z)/dz at each position z (0 <= z <=
RCSDA). A relativistic extension of the generalized Langevin equation yields
the formula RCSDA = A dot (E0 +E02/2M dot c2)p. The initial energy of
therapeutic protons satisfies E0 << 2M dot c2 (M dot c2 = 938.276 MeV), which
enables us to consider the relativistic contributions as correction terms.
Besides this phenomenological starting-point, a complete integration of the
Bethe-Bloch equation (BBE) is developed, which also provides the determination
of RCSDA, E(z) and dE(z)/dz and uses only those parameters given by the BBE
itself (i.e., without further empirical parameters like modification of
friction). The results obtained in the context of the aforementioned methods
are compared with Monte-Carlo calculations (GEANT4); this Monte-Carlo code is
also used with regard to further topics such as lateral scatter, nuclear
interactions, and buildup effects. In the framework of the CSDA, the energy
transfer from protons to environmental atomic electrons does not account for

Population-based genetic effects for developmental stuttering
Despite a lifetime prevalence of at least 5%, developmental stuttering, characterized by prolongations, blocks, and repetitions of speech sounds, remains a largely idiopathic speech disorder. Family, twin, and segregation studies overwhelmingly support a strong genetic influence on stuttering risk; however, its complex mode of inheritance combined with thus-far underpowered genetic studies contribute to the challenge of identifying and reproducing genes implicated in developmental stuttering susceptibility. We conducted a trans-ancestry genome-wide association study (GWAS) and meta-analysis of developmental stuttering in two primary datasets: The International Stuttering Project comprising 1,345 clinically ascertained cases from multiple global sites and 6,759 matched population controls from the biobank at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC), and 785 self-reported stuttering cases and 7,572 controls ascertained from The National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health (Add Health). Meta-analysis of these genome-wide association studies identified a genome-wide significant (GWS) signal for clinically reported developmental stuttering in the general population: a protective variant in the intronic or genic upstream region of SSUH2 (rs113284510, protective allele frequency = 7.49%, Z = −5.576, p = 2.46 × 10−8) that acts as an expression quantitative trait locus (eQTL) in esophagus-muscularis tissue by reducing its gene expression. In addition, we identified 15 loci reaching suggestive significance (p < 5 × 10−6). This foundational population-based genetic study of a common speech disorder reports the findings of a clinically ascertained study of developmental stuttering and highlights the need for further research
The liquid scintillator neutrino detector and LAMPF neutrino source
A search for neutrino oscillations of the type ν̄μ → ν̄c has been conducted at the Los Alamos Meson Physics Facility using ν̄μ from muon decay at rest. Evidence for this transition has been reported previously. This paper discusses in detail the experimental setup, detector operation and neutrino source, including aspects relevant to oscillation searches in the muon decay-at-rest and pion decay in flight channels
Bud Necrosis: A Disease of Groundnut Caused by Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus
This is the first ICRISAT Information Bulletin that deals with a virus disease of groundnut. Attention is focused on bud necrosis disease, caused by tomato spotted wilt virus, because of its economic significance on three continents. Epidemics build up rapidly with little warning and cause serious losses to growers. Protocols for purification and identification of the virus are given in detail. The symptoms of the disease in groundnut are illustrated. Procedures for a simple enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for the detection of the virus are given. The identification of the vector insects—species of Thysanoptera (thrips)—is difficult, and is still to be fully resolved. But a key is provided as an aid in identifying seven thrips species that have been implicated as vectors of tomato spotted wilt virus on groundnut. The current situation concerning management of bud necrosis disease is outlined. Suitable insecticides, cultural practices, biological control, and host-plant resistance are discussed to assist crop protection and extension workers in formulating integrated management systems appropriate to their particular situations
The CERES/NA45 Radial Drift Time Projection Chamber
The design, calibration, and performance of the first radial drift Time
Projection Chamber (TPC) are presented. The TPC was built and installed at the
CERES/NA45 experiment at the CERN SPS in the late nineties, with the objective
to improve the momentum resolution of the spectrometer. The upgraded experiment
took data twice, in 1999 and in 2000. After a detailed study of residual
distortions a spatial resolution of 340 um in the azimuthal and 640 um in the
radial direction was achieved, corresponding to a momentum resolution of Dp/p =
sqrt{(1% * p/GeV)^2 + (2%)^2}.Comment: 57 pages, 59 figure
