    HCI practices and the work of information architects

    We interviewed 26 information architects about their work, their backgrounds and their perceptions of their roles as information architects. Our research aimed to identify and understand the work practices that define the position of information architect as well as the human-computer interaction and usability issues that are relevant to their work. Our findings show that the work practices of information architects are far broader than those included in the popular technology design literature. A major issue that emerged from the research was the ongoing struggle of information architects to bring user-centred design methods into the design and development processes used in their organisations. A thorough knowledge of human-computer interaction and usability principles increased the ability of individual information architects to influence design processes. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2004

    The Grindelwald Fluctuation (1560–1630) was a cooling phase during the ‘Little Ice Age’ (c.1300–1850). Poor weather during the Fluctuation contributed to harvest failures, mass starvation and political crises across the globe. This paper examines information taken from Bristol chronicles that discuss some of the extreme weather events of the period. The entries support the notion that the Grindelwald Fluctuation featured some extraordinarily poor weather, such as great frosts, floods, severe storms, unseasonal snowfalls and droughts

    Risk Management for Ag Families: Evaluation of an Integrated Educational Program for Producers on the Northern Plains

    This article analyzes the impact of a series of educational programs focusing on risk management for agricultural families structured as a series of short educational sessions coupled with hands-on learning activities. Responses of program participants to pre- and post-workshop questionnaires, series questionnaires, and a follow-up mail survey are analyzed using non-parametric statistics. Results indicate that this integrated format, focusing on areas of risk affecting agricultural family businesses, had a positive impact on knowledge levels and behavior. Overall, these results suggest this type of educational format may have merit as compared to more didactic approaches for delivering risk management education

    Item Development and Face Validity of the Rheumatoid Arthritis Patient Priorities in Pharmacological Interventions Outcome Measures

    © 2015, Springer International Publishing Switzerland. Background: The assessment of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is dominated by core sets and indices that have been developed by RA professionals. Previous research developed a set of eight priority treatment outcomes generated by patients to complement the professionally developed core sets for RA. Objective: This study aimed to facilitate quantitative measurement of these outcomes. Methods: Two consultation meetings with patient research partners diagnosed with RA (n=18) were held to identify face validity in existing instruments (Phase 1) at the Bristol Royal Infirmary. Where validated measures did not exist, new numerical rating scales (NRS) were constructed and discussed at two focus groups with patients diagnosed with RA (n=8) at the Bristol Royal Infirmary and the Royal National Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (Phase 2). Feedback on the stem question, time frame, anchors and layout was recorded and transcribed verbatim. Results: Of the eight priorities, existing NRS for pain, activities of daily living and fatigue were voted as acceptable (Phase 1), but new NRS were required for five priorities. The partners strongly recommended that the three separate domains of severity, effect and ability to cope in each measurement area be assessed, as in the existing validated fatigue NRS. Focus group participants (Phase 2) made significant contributions to the phrasing of questions, for example how to ensure ‘mobility’ could be uniformly understood and how changes in valued activities be judged appropriately. Conclusion: Through extensive patient feedback, 24 NRS were constructed based on priorities identified by patients and encompassing domains where existing questionnaires contain many more items and do not address three important concepts endorsed by patients: severity, effect and coping.     The disappearing act: a dusty wind eclipsing RW Aur

ST/K502339/1 and ST/M001296/1, and the Science Foundation Ireland through grant no. 10/RFP/AST2780.RW Aur is a young binary star that experienced a deep dimming in 2010-11in component A and a second even deeper dimming from summer 2014 to summer 2016. We present new unresolved multi-band photometry during the 2014-16 eclipse, new emission line spectroscopy before and during th dimming, archive infrared photometry between 2014-15, as well as an overview of literature data. Spectral observations were carried out witht he Fibre-fed RObotic Dual-beam Optical Spectrograph on the Liverpool Telescope. Photometric monitoring was done with the Las Cumbres Observatory Global Telescope Network and James Gregory Telescope. Ourphotometry shows that RW Aur dropped in brightness to R = 12.5 in March 2016. In addition to the long-term dimming trend, RW Aur is variable on time-scales as short as hours. The short-term variation is most likely due to an unstable accretion flow. This, combined with the presence of accretion-related emission lines in the spectra suggest that accretion flows in the binary system are at least partially visible during the eclipse. The equivalent width of [O I] increases by a factor of ten in 2014, coinciding with the dimming event, confirming previous reports.The blueshifted part of the Hα profile is suppressed during the eclipse. In combination with the increase in mid-infrared brightness during the eclipse reported in the literature and seen in WISE archival data, and constraints on the geometry of the disk around RW Aur A we arrive at the conclusion that the obscuring screen is part of a wind emanating from the inner disc.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe

    Shape asymmetry : a morphological indicator for automatic detection of galaxies in the post-coalescence merger stages

    We present a new morphological indicator designed for automated recognition of galaxies with faint asymmetric tidal features suggestive of an ongoing or past merger. We use the new indicator, together with pre-existing diagnostics of galaxy structure to study the role of galaxy mergers in inducing (post-) starburst spectral signatures in local galaxies, and investigate whether (post-) starburst galaxies play a role in the build-up of the 'red sequence'. Our morphological and structural analysis of an evolutionary sample of 335 (post-) starburst galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 with starburst ages 0 <t(SB) <0.6 Gyr, shows that 45 per cent of galaxies with young starbursts (t(SB) <0.1 Gyr) show signatures of an ongoing or past merger. This fraction declines with starburst age, and we find a good agreement between automated and visual classifications. The majority of the oldest (post-) starburst galaxies in our sample (t(SB) similar to 0.6 Gyr) have structural properties characteristic of early-type discs and are not as highly concentrated as the fully quenched galaxies commonly found on the 'red sequence' in the present day Universe. This suggests that, if (post-) starburst galaxies are a transition phase between active star-formation and quiescence, they do not attain the structure of presently quenched galaxies within the first 0.6 Gyr after the starburst.Peer reviewe

    Bivariate stochastic modeling of functional response with natural mortality

    A correction due to Abbott (1925) is the standard method of dealing with control mortality in insect bioassay to estimate the mortality of an insect conditional on control mortality not having occurred. In this article a bivariate stochastic process for overall mortality is developed in which natural mortality and predation are jointly modeled to take account of the competing-risks associated with prey loss. The total mortality estimate from this model is essentially identical with that from more classical modeling. However, when predation loss is estimated in the absence of control mortality the results are somewhat different, with the estimate from the bivariate model being lower than that from using Abbott’s formula in conjunction with the classical model. It is argued that overdispersion in observed mortality data corresponds to correlated outcomes (death or survival) for the prey initially present, while Abbott’s correction relies implicitly on independence

    The host galaxies of FeLoBAL quasars at z ∼ 0.9 are not dominated by recent major mergers

    Theoretical models have suggested an evolutionary model for quasars, in which most of luminous quasars are triggered by major mergers. It is also postulated that reddening as well as powerful outflows indicate an early phase of activity, close to the merger event. We test this model on a sample of quasars with powerful low ionization outflows seen in broad Iron absorption lines (FeLoBAL). This sample of objects show strong reddening in the optical and fast (\sim0.1c) high column density outflows. We present HST WFC3/IR F160W imaging of 10 FeLoBAL host galaxies at redshifts z\sim0.9 (λrest8500A˚\lambda_{rest}\sim8500\AA). We compare the host galaxy morphologies and merger signatures of FeLoBALs to luminous blue non-BAL quasars from Villforth et al. 2017 of comparable luminosity, which show no excess of merger features compared to inactive control samples. If FeLoBAL quasars are indeed in a young evolutionary state, close in time to the initial merging event, they should have strong merger features. We find that the host galaxies of FeLoBAL quasars are of comparable luminosity to the host galaxies of optical quasars and show no enhanced merger rates. When looking only at quasars without strong PSF residuals, an enhancement in disturbed and merger rates is seen. While FeLoBAL hosts show weak enhancements over a control of blue quasars, their host galaxies are not dominated by recent major mergers.Comment: accepted for publication in MNRA
