Passive propellant system
The system utilizes a spherical tank structure A separated into two equal volume compartments by a flat bulkhead B. Each compartment has four similar gallery channel legs located in the principal vehicle axes, ensuring that bulk propellant will contact at least one gallery leg during vehicle maneuvers. The forward compartment gallery channel legs collect propellant and feed it into the aft compartment through communication screens which protrude into the aft compartment. The propellant is then collected by the screened gallery channels in the aft compartment and supplied to the propellant outlet. The invention resides in the independent gallery assembly and screen structure by means of which propellant flow from forward to aft compartments is maintained. Liquid surface tension of the liquid on the screens is used to control liquid flow. The system provides gas-free propellants in low or zero-g environments regardless of axial accelerations and propellant orientation in bulk regions of the vessel
An Isotopic analysis of the hydrology and riparian vegetation water sources on Bishop Creek
Five power generation plants along an eleven kilometer stretch divert Bishop Creek water for hydro-electric power. Stream diversion may be adversely affecting the riparian vegetation. Stable isotopic analysis is employed to determine surface water/ground-water interactions along the creek. surface water originates primarily from three headwater lakes. Discharge into Bishop Creek below the headwaters is primarily derived from ground water. The average δD and δ18O values are significantly different for surface water and ground water that an isotopic analysis can delineate between these two components of flow. Therefore isotopic shifts along the creek can determine gaining reaches. In addition, by knowing the isotopic signatures of various waters in the watershed, it may be possible to examine tree waters to determine their water source(s)
Calculation of compressible flow about three-dimensional inlets with auxiliary inlets, slats and vanes by means of a panel method
An efficient and user oriented method was constructed for calculating flow in and about complex inlet configurations. Efficiency is attained by: (1) the use of a panel method; (2) a technique of superposition for obtaining solutions at any inlet operating condition; and (3) employment of an advanced matrix iteration technique for solving large full systems of equations, including the nonlinear equations for the Kutta condition. User concerns are addressed by the provision of several novel graphical output options that yield a more complete comprehension of the flowfield than was possible previously
Highlights of unsteady pressure tests on a 14 percent supercritical airfoil at high Reynolds number, transonic condition
Steady and unsteady pressures were measured on a 2-D supercritical airfoil in the Langley Research Center 0.3-m Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel at Reynolds numbers from 6 x 1,000,000 to 35 x 1,000,000. The airfoil was oscillated in pitch at amplitudes from plus or minus .25 degrees to plus or minus 1.0 degrees at frequencies from 5 Hz to 60 Hz. The special requirements of testing an unsteady pressure model in a pressurized cryogenic tunnel are discussed. Selected steady measured data are presented and are compared with GRUMFOIL calculations at Reynolds number of 6 x 1,000,000 and 30 x 1,000,000. Experimental unsteady results at Reynolds numbers of 6 x 1,000,000 and 30 x 1,000,000 are examined for Reynolds number effects. Measured unsteady results at two mean angles of attack at a Reynolds number of 30 x 1,000,000 are also examined
Discovery of Very High Energy gamma - ray emission from the extreme BL Lac object H2356-309 with H.E.S.S
The understanding of acceleration mechanisms in active galactic nuclei (AGN)
jets and the measurement of the extragalactic-background-light (EBL) density
are closely linked and require the detection of a large sample of
very-high-energy (VHE) emitting extragalactic objects at varying redshifts. We
report here on the discovery with the H.E.S.S. (High Energy Stereoscopic
System) atmospheric-Cherenkov telescopes of the VHE Gamma-ray emission from
H2356 - 309, an extreme BL Lac object located at a redshift of 0.165. The
observations of this object, which was previously proposed as a
southern-hemisphere VHE candidate source, were performed between June and
December 2004. The total exposure is 38.9 hours live time, after data quality
selection, which yields the detection of a signal at the level of 9.0
(standard deviations) .Comment: To appear on proceeding of 29th International Cosmic Ray Conference

JPL preferred parts list: Reliable electronic components
The JPL Preferred Parts List was prepared to provide a basis for selection of electronic parts for JPL spacecraft programs. Supporting tests for the listed parts were designed to comply with specific spacecraft environmental requirements. The list tabulates the electronic, magnetic, and electromechanical parts applicable to all JPL electronic equipment wherein reliability is a major concern. The parts listed are revelant to equipment supplied by subcontractors as well as fabricated at the laboratory
Quasiparticle Band Structure and Density Functional Theory: Single-Particle Excitations and Band Gaps in Lattice Models
We compare the quasiparticle band structure for a model insulator obtained
from the fluctuation exchange approximation (FEA) with the eigenvalues of the
corresponding density functional theory (DFT) and local density approximation
(LDA). The discontinuity in the exchange-correlation potential for this model
is small and the FEA and DFT band structures are in good agreement. In contrast
to conventional wisdom, the LDA for this model overestimates the size of the
band gap. We argue that this is a consequence of an FEA self-energy that is
strongly frequency dependent, but essentially local.Comment: 8 pages, and 5 figure
Possible Experience: from Boole to Bell
Mainstream interpretations of quantum theory maintain that violations of the
Bell inequalities deny at least either realism or Einstein locality. Here we
investigate the premises of the Bell-type inequalities by returning to earlier
inequalities presented by Boole and the findings of Vorob'ev as related to
these inequalities. These findings together with a space-time generalization of
Boole's elements of logic lead us to a completely transparent Einstein local
counterexample from everyday life that violates certain variations of the Bell
inequalities. We show that the counterexample suggests an interpretation of the
Born rule as a pre-measure of probability that can be transformed into a
Kolmogorov probability measure by certain Einstein local space-time
characterizations of the involved random variables.Comment: Published in: EPL, 87 (2009) 6000
