Estimated Mask Use and Temporal Relationship to COVID-19 Epidemiology of Black Lives Matter Protests in 12 Cities
Background: There is an increased risk of SARS-CoV-2 transmission during mass gatherings and a risk of asymptomatic infection. We aimed to estimate the use of masks during Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests and whether these protests increased the risk of COVID-19. Two reviewers screened 496 protest images for mask use, with high inter-rater reliability. Protest intensity, use of tear gas, government control measures, and testing rates were estimated in 12 cities. A correlation analysis was conducted to assess the potential effect of mask use and other measures, adjusting for testing rates, on COVID-19 epidemiology 4 weeks (two incubation periods) post-protests. Mask use ranged from 69 to 96% across protests. There was no increase in the incidence of COVID-19 post-protest in 11 cities. After adjusting for testing rates, only Miami, which involved use of tear gas and had high protest intensity, showed a clear increase in COVID-19 after one incubation period post-protest. No significant correlation was found between incidence and protest factors. Our study showed that protests in most cities studied did not increase COVID-19 incidence in 2020, and a high level of mask use was seen. The absence of an epidemic surge within two incubation periods of a protest is indicative that the protests did not have a major influence on epidemic activity, except in Miami. With the globally circulating highly transmissible Alpha, Delta, and Omicron variants, layered interventions such as mandated mask use, physical distancing, testing, and vaccination should be applied for mass gatherings in the future
Factors Associated with SARS-CoV-2 Attack Rates in Aged Care-A Meta-Analysis
Background: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has resulted in significant morbidity and mortality in aged-care facilities worldwide. The attention of infection control in aged care needs to shift towards the built environment, especially in relation to using the existing space to allow social distancing and isolation. Physical infrastructure of aged care facilities has been shown to present challenges to the implementation of isolation procedures. To explore the relationship of the physical layout of aged care facilities with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) attack rates among residents, a meta-Analysis was conducted. Methods: Using the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis Protocol (PRISMA-P), studies were identified from 5 databases using a registered search strategy with PROSPERO. Meta-Analysis for pooled attack rates of SARS-CoV-2 in residents and staff was conducted, with subgroup analysis for physical layout variables such as total number of beds, single rooms, number of floors, number of buildings in the facility, and staff per 100 beds. Results: We included 41 articles across 11 countries, reporting on 90 657 residents and 6521 staff in 757 facilities. The overall pooled attack rate was 42.0% among residents (95% CI, 38.0%-47.0%) and 21.7% in staff (95% CI, 15.0%-28.4%). Attack rates in residents were significantly higher in single-site facilities with standalone buildings than facilities with smaller, detached buildings. Staff-To-bed ratio significantly explains some of the heterogeneity of the attack rate between studies. Conclusions: The design of aged care facilities should be smaller in size, with adequate space for social distancing

New differential equations for on-shell loop integrals
We present a novel type of differential equations for on-shell loop
integrals. The equations are second-order and importantly, they reduce the loop
level by one, so that they can be solved iteratively in the loop order. We
present several infinite series of integrals satisfying such iterative
differential equations. The differential operators we use are best written
using momentum twistor space. The use of the latter was advocated in recent
papers discussing loop integrals in N=4 super Yang-Mills. One of our
motivations is to provide a tool for deriving analytical results for scattering
amplitudes in this theory. We show that the integrals needed for planar MHV
amplitudes up to two loops can be thought of as deriving from a single master
topology. The master integral satisfies our differential equations, and so do
most of the reduced integrals. A consequence of the differential equations is
that the integrals we discuss are not arbitrarily complicated transcendental
functions. For two specific two-loop integrals we give the full analytic
solution. The simplicity of the integrals appearing in the scattering
amplitudes in planar N=4 super Yang-Mills is strongly suggestive of a relation
to the conjectured underlying integrability of the theory. We expect these
differential equations to be relevant for all planar MHV and non-MHV
amplitudes. We also discuss possible extensions of our method to more general

Generalised ladders and single-valued polylogarithms
We introduce and solve an infinite class of loop integrals which generalises
the well-known ladder series. The integrals are described in terms of
single-valued polylogarithmic functions which satisfy certain differential
equations. The combination of the differential equations and single-valued
behaviour allow us to explicitly construct the polylogarithms recursively. For
this class of integrals the symbol may be read off from the integrand in a
particularly simple way. We give an explicit formula for the simplest
generalisation of the ladder series. We also relate the generalised ladder
integrals to a class of vacuum diagrams which includes both the wheels and the

From correlation functions to scattering amplitudes
We study the correlators of half-BPS protected operators in N=4
super-Yang-Mills theory, in the limit where the positions of the adjacent
operators become light-like separated. We compute the loop corrections by means
of Lagrangian insertions. The divergences resulting from the light-cone limit
are regularized by changing the dimension of the integration measure over the
insertion points. Switching from coordinates to dual momenta, we show that the
logarithm of the correlator is identical with twice the logarithm of the
matching MHV gluon scattering amplitude. We present a number of examples of

AccessLab: Workshops to broaden access to scientific research
AccessLabs are workshops with two simultaneous motivations, achieved through direct citizen-scientist pairings: (1) to decentralise research skills so that a broader range of people are able to access/use scientific research, and (2) to expose science researchers to the difficulties of using their research as an outsider, creating new open access advocates. Five trial AccessLabs have taken place for policy makers, media/journalists, marine sector participants, community groups, and artists. The act of pairing science academics with local community members helps build understanding and trust between groups at a time when this relationship appears to be under increasing threat from different political and economic currents in society. Here, we outline the workshop motivations, format, and evaluation, with the aim that others can build on the methods developed
From counting to construction of BPS states in N=4 SYM
We describe a universal element in the group algebra of symmetric groups,
whose characters provides the counting of quarter and eighth BPS states at weak
coupling in N=4 SYM, refined according to representations of the global
symmetry group. A related projector acting on the Hilbert space of the free
theory is used to construct the matrix of two-point functions of the states
annihilated by the one-loop dilatation operator, at finite N or in the large N
limit. The matrix is given simply in terms of Clebsch-Gordan coefficients of
symmetric groups and dimensions of U(N) representations. It is expected, by
non-renormalization theorems, to contain observables at strong coupling. Using
the stringy exclusion principle, we interpret a class of its eigenvalues and
eigenvectors in terms of giant gravitons. We also give a formula for the action
of the one-loop dilatation operator on the orthogonal basis of the free theory,

Hybridization as a threat in climate relict Nuphar pumila (Nymphaeaceae)
Field studies and conceptual work on hybridization-mediated extinction risk in climate relicts are extremely rare. Nuphar pumila (Nymphaeaceae) is one of the most emblematic climate relicts in Europe with few isolated populations in the Alpine arc. The extent of introgression with related lowland and generalist species Nupharlutea has never been studied using molecular methods. All biogeographical regions where N.pumila naturally occurs in the neighbourhood of the Alpine arc were sampled and studied using nuclear microsatellite markers. Furthermore, we used forward-in-time simulations and Approximate Bayesian Computation to check whether an introgression scenario fits with the observed admixture patterns and estimated the demographic parameters associated with this process. Our study confirms ongoing hybridization between N.pumila and N.lutea and validates it by the use of population models. More than 40 % of investigated N.pumila individuals were admixed and hybrids were found in over 60 % of studied populations. The introgression is bidirectional and is most likely a result of very recent gene flow. Our work provides strong evidence for rapid extinction risk and demographic swamping between specialized climatic relicts and closely related generalists. The remaining pure populations of N.pumila are rare in the Alpine arc and deserve high conservation priority
Temporal Dissociation between Myeloperoxidase (MPO)-Modified LDL and MPO Elevations during Chronic Sleep Restriction and Recovery in Healthy Young Men
OBJECTIVES: Many studies have evaluated the ways in which sleep disturbances may influence inflammation and the possible links of this effect to cardiovascular risk. Our objective was to investigate the effects of chronic sleep restriction and recovery on several blood cardiovascular biomarkers. METHODS AND RESULTS: Nine healthy male non-smokers, aged 22-29 years, were admitted to the Sleep Laboratory for 11 days and nights under continuous electroencephalogram polysomnography. The study consisted of three baseline nights of 8 hours sleep (from 11 pm to 7 am), five sleep-restricted nights, during which sleep was allowed only between 1 am and 6 am, and three recovery nights of 8 hours sleep (11 pm to 7 am). Myeloperoxidase-modified low-density lipoprotein levels increased during the sleep-restricted period indicating an oxidative stress. A significant increase in the quantity of slow-wave sleep was measured during the first recovery night. After this first recovery night, insulin-like growth factor-1 levels increased and myeloperoxidase concentration peaked. CONCLUSIONS: We observed for the first time that sleep restriction and the recovery process are associated with differential changes in blood biomarkers of cardiovascular disease
