This article offers a theoretical discussion of the importance of the problem of time in social research. Our aim is to contribute to the theory of the “entanglement” of socio-genetic and biographical processes by proposing a framework for understanding how speakers, through their narratives, articulate different biographical, social and historical time scales. Basing ourselves on a case study of an autobiographical discourse, we discuss the specific discursive forms which speakers employ to embed different scales of time in the same discourse. We mainly draw on the interpretations of this subject by Bajtin, Bergson, Deleuze, and Halbwachs. We argue that the unfolding of time can be understood with the help of Nietzsche’s concept of the return, and point out some implications of the theorizing of memory.

This paper examines both the theoretical tensions, and those that exist between theory and practice regarding the incorporation of men in the primary prevention of gender based violence work. The analysis is based on a critical literature review of theoretical, empirical and practical articles, from mainly English-speaking countries. The article explores the definition of gender violence that is dealt with in these works and the role of masculinities as a cause of violence. Moreover, various elements that facilitate and hinder interventions with men in primary prevention are also analyzed. There are different tensions that arise and are discussed in the article. The consequences of these tensions include: a reduced definition of gender-based violence that excludes violence between men and against LGBTIQ+ people, a tendency to binarize gender-based violence as a phenomenon that affects only heterosexual and cisgender couples, an emphasis on individual aspects of men over a social transformation of masculinities, and lastly, an absence of interventions promoted and financed by states through specific social policies. The results presented contribute to systematizing knowledge that is generally scattered in the literature and proposals are made to reduce, and hopefully reverse these tensions.

Nature Is for Trees, Culture Is for Humans: A Critical Reading of the IPCC Report

    No full text
In this article, we problematize conventional views regarding culture presented in the assessment report entitled Climate Change 2014: Impacts, Adaptation, and Vulnerability. This report is a contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report produced by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). We posit that when culture is seen as a stable category and imagined as a space composed of humans—and, more precisely, only certain humans—an epistemological, ontological, and ethical order is reproduced in which (a) nature is framed as a passive and apolitical “out there”, (b) knowledge based on this division is misleading and partial (e.g., social scientists study culture and natural scientists study nature), and (c) dominant humanist assumptions become common-sense explanations for inequalities. We conduct a critical discourse analysis of the IPCC report to better understand which assumptions produce the conceptualization of culture as a stable category. In our conclusion, we offer an example of a semiotic-meaning intervention of a section of the report to demonstrate the vitality of the concepts presented in this document. Subsequently, we discuss the consequences of omitting the vital traffic between the biological, social, and cultural realms from discussions on climate change to reexamine the production and reproduction of inequalities

Diferencia y normalidad: producción etnográfica e intervención en escuelas

This article presents an ethnographic inquiry and intervention circuit created during a research between 2013 and 2015 in five school in Santiago de Chile, which aimed to document the production of normality and difference in school spaces. The theoretical and methodological frameworks answer the question How to do ethnography and intervention when the research question is situated under the normality production. The results show how the neutralized cultural and social processes are a productive space for the reflection necessary to transform the teaching practices.

General statistical framework for quantitative proteomics by stable isotope labeling

Pedro J. Navarro et al.The combination of stable isotope labeling (SIL) with mass spectrometry (MS) allows comparison of the abundance of thousands of proteins in complex mixtures. However, interpretation of the large data sets generated by these techniques remains a challenge because appropriate statistical standards are lacking. Here, we present a generally applicable model that accurately explains the behavior of data obtained using current SIL approaches, including 18O, iTRAQ, and SILAC labeling, and different MS instruments. The model decomposes the total technical variance into the spectral, peptide, and protein variance components, and its general validity was demonstrated by confronting 48 experimental distributions against 18 different null hypotheses. In addition to its general applicability, the performance of the algorithm was at least similar than that of other existing methods. The model also provides a general framework to integrate quantitative and error information fully, allowing a comparative analysis of the results obtained from different SIL experiments. The model was applied to the global analysis of protein alterations induced by low H2O2 concentrations in yeast, demonstrating the increased statistical power that may be achieved by rigorous data integration. Our results highlight the importance of establishing an adequate and validated statistical framework for the analysis of high-throughput data. © 2014 American Chemical Society. This work was supported by grants BIO2009-07990, BIO2009-11735, BFU2009-08004, SAF 2009-07520, and BIO2012-37926 from the Spanish Ministry of Science and Education, CAM BIO/0194/2006 (Cardiovrep) from the Madrid regional government, and an institutional grant from the Fundación Ramón Areces to the CBMSO.
