Teamwork assessment in order to promote engineering students innovative attitude

This paper presents an outline of the evaluation of the active learning taking place in an engineering course1 in the Universidad de los Andes in Colombia. The course intends to contribute to the development of the innovative attitude of Systems and Computing Engineering and Industrial Engineering students (average age is 20), through the development of competences such as: - Engineering teamwork - Effective communication in engineering processes - Engineering systems design - Management of engineering projects Throughout the course the students work in interdisciplinary teams (5 students each). Each team has the following of the teachers (One Computing Engineering professor and one Industrial engineering professor) and one member of the entrepreneurs staff (ICT leaders). Each team should propose and develop an engineering project based on ICT innovation. This course is inspired on the CDIO proposal (Conceive, Design, Implement, Operate), with a particular emphasis in one additional first step: the Observe step. The OCDIO steps (observation, conception, design, implementation and operation) of the project are developed during two academic semesters. At the end of this process, the teams present their project in a fair that’s open for the business public and in a contest. The winners of the contest continue the next year with the implementation of the project [1]. So far, 20 groups have participated each semester and there have been 4 winning teams (20 students). We tried to assess the teamwork evolution along the process and its relation with the innovation attitude. In order to achieve this, we’ve had gathered information from the entrepreneurs, teachers and students who, through observation tools, have allowed us to define indicators related to teamwork. For the analysis we have relied on the different evaluation instances (oral presentations, papers, the fair, and the contest), the tools we have designed (surveys), and video recordings of different processes.Peer Reviewe

Efecto del campo magnético en el tratamiento de aguas residuales en las industrias

At present, different techniques have been developed for the treatment of wastewater generated mainly by large industries, since these are part of a large percentage of environmental pollution. For this problem, in this academic article we propose a technique for the decontamination of water in the industrial sector through the implementation of magnetic field, where we expose different methods of handling magnetism and the reactions it has with water. The magnetic field is a feasible alternative to wastewater due to its different methods in various fields, through the electrical charges that the field generates, the pollutants that are in the wastewater caused by garbage and chemical waste can be separated.En la actualidad se han desarrollado diferentes técnicas para el tratamiento de aguas residuales generadas principalmente por las grandes industrias, puesto que estas hacen parte de un gran porcentaje de contaminación del medio ambiente. Para esta problemática en el presente artículo académico proponemos una técnica para la descontaminación de las aguas en el sector industrial por medio de la implementación de campo magnético, en donde exponemos diferentes métodos del manejo del magnetismo y las reacciones que tiene este con el agua. Identification of Six New World Leishmania species through the implementation of a High-Resolution Melting (HRM) genotyping assay

Background: Leishmaniases are tropical zoonotic diseases, caused by parasites from the genus Leishmania. New World (NW) species are related to sylvatic cycles although urbanization processes have been reported in some South American Countries such as Colombia. This eco-epidemiological complexity imposes a challenge to the detection of circulating parasite species, not only related to human cases but also infecting vectors and reservoirs. Currently, no harmonized methods have been deployed to discriminate the NW Leishmania species. Findings: Herein, we conducted a systematic and mechanistic High-Resolution Melting (HRM) assay targeted to HSP70 and ITS1. Specific primers were designed that coupled with a HRM analyses permitted to discriminate six NW Leishmania species. In order to validate the herein described algorithm, we included 35 natural isolates obtained from human cases, insect vectors and mammals. Our genotyping assay allowed the correct assignment of the six NW Leishmania species (L. mexicana, L. infantum (chagasi), L. amazonensis, L. panamensis, L. guyanensis and L. braziliensis) based on reference strains. When the algorithm was applied to a set of well-characterized strains by means of PCR-RFLP, MLEE and monoclonal antibodies (MA) we observed a tailored concordance between the HRM and PCR-RFLP/MLEE/MA (KI = 1.0). Additionally, we tested the limit of detection for the HRM method showing that this is able to detect at least 10 equivalent-parasites per mL. Conclusions: This is a rapid and reliable method to conduct molecular epidemiology and host-parasite association studies in endemic areas. © 2014 Baleela et al

Professional formation in e-learning environments. Case study about the Project-Based Learning (PBL) in postgraduate virtual course

Cada vez más gobiernos han sustentado el desarrollo de su conocimiento a través de estrategias y políticas de mejora la educación superior, innovación e investigación. En Latinoamérica es incipiente la incorporación de sistemas tecnológicos para la construcción de ambientes de aprendizaje innovadores. La investigación tiene por objetivo caracterizar el alcance de la metodología de Aprendizaje Basado en Proyectos en la formación profesional de docentes en un ambiente e-learning de aprendizaje. Se diseñó un ambiente de aprendizaje en plataforma virtual Blackboard, con base en la sistematización de cinco fases fundamentadas en la metodología PBL, se empleó el diseño metodológico estudio de caso instrumental con una muestra de 60 estudiantes de diferentes partes de América Latina (92% México, 3% Colombia y 5% Ecuador), los instrumentos que se emplearon fueron cuestionarios ad hoc y rúbricas de evaluación digitales. El análisis cualitativo de contenido evidencia una alta frecuencia en las categorías temáticas: vinculación de conceptos teórico-metodológicos, competencias de colaboración y trabajo en equipo, recursos digitales, programas y plataformas on-line. Se concluye que el impacto del ABP en los cursos de Posgrado favorece la motivación de los docentes en innovar su práctica educativa, así como la generación de un alto compromiso en el trabajo colaborativo enfocado a la resolución de problemas en contextos sociales-educativos en estudiantes de un programa de Maestría en Educación de financiamiento privado, con énfasis en la formación de innovación educativa.More governments have supported the development of their knowledge through strategies and policies to improve higher education, innovation and research. In Latin America, the incorporation of technological systems for the construction of innovative learning environments is still incipient. The objective of the research is to characterize the scope of the Project-Based Learning (PBL) methodology in the professional training of teachers in an e-learning learning environment. A learning environment was designed in the virtual platform Blackboard, based on the systematization of five phases based on the PBL methodology, the methodological design of the instrumental case study was used with a sample of 60 students from different parts of Latin America (92% Mexico, 3% Colombia and 5% Ecuador), the data collection instruments that were used were ad hoc questionnaires and digital evaluation rubrics. The qualitative analysis of content shows a high frequency in the thematic categories of: linking of theoretical-methodological concepts, collaboration and teamwork skills, digital resources, programs and on-line platforms. It is concluded that impact of PBL methodology in Postgraduate courses favors the motivation of teachers in innovating their educational practice, as well as the generation of a high commitment in the collaborative work focused on the resolution of problems in social-educational contexts in students of a Master's program in Education with private funding, and emphasis on educational innovation training.peerReviewe

Efectos meteorológicos generados por ondas tropicales en Colombia

Tropical waves are considered a relevant meteorological phenomenon in Colombia due to the effects that can directly or indirectly affect the north of the country, this phenomenon is considered as an alteration generated by the North African winds that are in constant movement and it is related to other variables such as temperature and precipitation. At present there are different digital platforms that allow us to recognize climatic conditions around the world, where it is possible to evaluate the changes produced by these waves by passing through the tropics. The data from these platforms visualize, manage and analyze geographic information. Therefore, the research development of this article will be based on the applicability of the geographic information systems tool within meteorology, in this case Windy is proposed and will carry out an analysis of the most serious components and effects produced by these waves in Colombia.Las ondas tropicales son consideradas un fenómeno meteorológico relevante en Colombia debido a los efectos que pueden llegar a afectar directa o indirectamente el norte del país, este fenómeno se considera como una alteración generada por los vientos del norte de África que se encuentran en constante movimiento y se relaciona con otras variables como temperatura y precipitación. Identification of a new candidate locus for ebstein anomaly in 1p36.2

Ebstein anomaly (EA) is a rare congenital heart defect (CHD) with a poorly characterized genetic etiology. However, some EA patients carry deletions in 1p36, all of which have been reported to carry distal deletions and share loss of the PRDM16 gene, which is currently considered the most likely candidate for EA development in this region. Here, we report a patient with an 11.96-Mb proximal 1p36 deletion, without loss of PRDM16, who presented with EA and a proximal deletion phenotype. This finding suggests that PRDM16 loss is not required for the development of EA in 1p36 deletions and that the loss of an additional proximal locus in 1p36 is also likely associated with EA. Our data suggest that a distal locus containing the SKI gene and a proximal locus containing the CHD-associated genes RERE and UBE4B are the most probable etiological factors for EA in patients with 1p36 deletion syndrome. © 2018 S.
