Regaining the Shore Agency of Maracaibo. Coastal Waste Narratives
Maracaibo has lived from its territory, particularly the Maracaibo Lake. Throughout the years the lake has been exploited for its oil, resulting in a clear degradation. If design can serve as a narrative by interpreting the traces of the space, how can we read this broken space from the perception of its inhabitants? Understanding the notion of the area’s vulnerability, how can we acknowledge and have preferable measures for recognition and respectful use of the shore? The research is based on the concepts of spatial justice, community participation and empowerment to accomplish the regaining of this coastal space.
It was observed through a historical and geographical analysis that the city has had little concern in integrating the coast to its planning, causing a fragmented space, and looks on the reasons and consequences this has had. This research develops a proposal through the selection of a case study community, Lago y Sol. This is made recollecting the community’s insight and narratives through participation methods like workshops and interviews. The data compiled served as a base to develop the design that aims to create a place for them to enjoy while addressing the issue of coastal waste. The intent is to present an example of how the natural and the built environment can bridge for a better urban development based on the imaginary of its direct users. Responding to the necessity for a better development, especially because of its rich potential for social encounter, in a country where much reconciliation is needed
Hydrogen-Bonding Organocatalysis Enabled Photocatalytic Intramolecular [2+2]-Cycloaddition Reaction
The combination of organocatalytic activation and photocatalysis for enabling the intramolecular [2+2]‐cycloaddition of enone‐ene substrates bearing one Lewis base binding site is reported. While in a variety of solvents a poor conversion or no reaction takes place in the absence of a hydrogen bonding catalyst, the corresponding ring‐fused cyclobutane products could be built in moderate to good yields using a synergistic dual iridium‐urea co‐catalytic system. Control and mechanistic studies supported the postulated interaction between the organocatalyst and the substrate, which proved essential for an efficient energy transfer from the photosensitizer
Quality Control Analysis to Detect Defects in Drywall Fastener Screws
Screws are pieces designed to join two or more elements, they are composed of three parts that are thread, neck, and head. Depending on the type of material they are made of their size and functionality can acquire different characteristics. This article describes the way in which a sample of 200 2-inch screws used for drywall were evaluated to detect potential failures in their manufacturing, through the application of quality tools, with which the main factors that intervene to achieve the best quality of these products were determined. In addition, the study of a real case allowed us to demonstrate feasible improvements that can be applied not only in a certain area, but in the whole industry, since the quality of a product also determines the potential growth of a company. The results obtained showed the degree of affectation of each defect, being advisable for the company to focus on bent screws, screws with deformed tips and screws with incorrect measurements, as these represent greater losses. In conclusion, in the industry it is necessary to use and manage tools to increase the productivity and quality of the processes, thus having a significant impact on all areas of production, achieving the best possible final product
The Socio-Educational Adaptation of Secondary School Migrant Students in Sicily: Migrant Generation, School Linguistic Mediation and Teacher Proactivity Factors
This study aims to analyze the implications of linguistic mediation processes and educational proactivity in schools for the socio-educational adaptation of immigrant students. The study
is based on empirical research and the perspectives of the main actors: the immigrant students
themselves. To this end, a non-experimental and descriptive quantitative methodology was used.
The sample consisted of 100 students of foreign origin enrolled in an Italian school located in a
typical socio-cultural environment. The results show significant differences in linguistic mediation
and socio-educational variables and differences in expectations of progress and social adaptation
of students born outside Italy vis-a-vis students who, although born in Italy, are still considered
foreigners. It will also analyze teaching proactivity as a communication facilitator for first-generation
immigrant pupils born outside Italy. In conclusion, it is noted that, to favor multicultural environments where all students, regardless of their origin, feel accepted, integrated, and welcomed, it is
necessary to utilize all available resources to promote improvements in teaching-learning processes
and strengthen social relation
Experimental Analysis of the Reaction Rate of Hydrated Class G Cement Powder at 11 bar PCO2 and Ambient Temperature
The aim of this work is to study the alteration of class G Cement at ambient temperature under a relatively high CO2 partial pressure through suitably designed laboratory experiments, in which cement hydration and carbonation are taken into account separately. First, the hydration process was carried out for 28 days to identify and quantify the hydrated solid phases formed. After the completion of hydration, accompanied by partial carbonation under atmospheric conditions, the carbonation process was investigated using a stirred micro-reactor by reacting cement powder with pure CO2(g) (PCO2 = 11 bar) and MilliQ water for different reaction times. The reaction time was varied to constrain the reaction kinetics of the carbonation process and to investigate the evolution of primary and secondary solid phases. Mineralogical analyses (X-ray Powder Diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscope) were carried out to this purpose. Water analyses were also performed by ion chromatography at the end of each experimental run to investigate the chemical effects of cement carbonation on the aqueous solution. The carbonation degree was calculated from the results of Thermo-Gravimetric analysis (TGA). The main results of these experiments is the quick conversion of portlandite and Ca1.60SiO3.6·2.58H2O (C-S-H) to calcite. In fact, the carbonation degree attains 80% after 6 hours of reaction time. Experimental outcomes will be simulated by means of the PHREEQC software package to obtain further indications on cement carbonatio
Ecological risk assessment of organic waste amendments using the species sensitivity distribution from a soil organisms test battery
Safe amendment rates (the predicted no-effect concentration or PNEC) of seven organic wastes were estimated from the species sensitivity distribution of a battery of soil biota tests and compared with different realistic amendment scenarios (different predicted environmental concentrations or PEC). None of the wastes was expected to exert noxious effects on soil biota if applied according either to the usual maximum amendment rates in Europe or phosphorus demands of crops (below 2 tonnes DM ha−1). However, some of the wastes might be problematic if applied according to nitrogen demands of crops (above 2 tonnes DM ha−1). Ammonium content and organic matter stability of the studied wastes are the most influential determinants of the maximum amendment rates derived in this study, but not pollutant burden. This finding indicates the need to stabilize wastes prior to their reuse in soils in order to avoid short-term impacts on soil communities
