    New Reports of Exotic and Native Ambrosia and Bark Beetle Species (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) From Ohio

    In a 2007 survey of ambrosia and bark beetles (Coleoptera: Curculionidae: Scolytinae) along a transect in northeastern Ohio, we collected six exotic and three native species not previously reported from the state. These species include the exotic ambrosia beetles Ambrosiodmus rubricollis (Eichhoff), Dryoxylon onoharaensum (Murayama), Euwallacea validus (Eichhoff), Xyleborus californicus Wood, Xyleborus pelliculosusEichhoff, and Xylosandrus crassiusculus (Motschulsky). The native ambrosia beetle Corthylus columbianus Hopkins, and the native bark beetles Dryocoetes autographus (Ratzeburg) and Hylastes tenuis Eichhoff are also reported from Ohio for the first time. Our study suggests a northward range expansion for five of the six exotic species including, X. crassiusculus, which is an important pest of nursery and orchard crops in the southeastern United States

    Minimal realization of light thermal Dark Matter

    We propose a minimal UV-complete model for kinematically forbidden Dark Matter (DM) leading to a sub-GeV thermal relic. Our crucial realization is that the two-Higgs-doublet model can provide a light mediator through which the DM can annihilate into SM leptons, avoiding indirect detection constraints. The DM mass is predicted to be very close to the mass of the leptons, which can potentially be identified from DM annihilation into gamma-rays. Due to sizable couplings to muons in reproducing the DM relic abundance, this framework naturally favors a resolution to the (g2)μ(g-2)_\mu anomaly. Furthermore, by embedding this setup to the Zee model, we show that the phenomenon of neutrino oscillations is inherently connected to the observed relic abundance of DM. All new physics involved in our framework lies at or below the electroweak scale, making it testable at upcoming colliders, beam-dump experiments, and future sub-GeV gamma-ray telescopes

    Groundwater characterization of a heterogeneous granitic rock massif for shallow tunneling

    Shallow tunneling may encounter a number of problems, the most important of which is high water inflows in transmissive areas that are often associated with fractures or discontinuities. Moreover, research into shallow tunneling may be limited by the duration and cost of the civil engineering works. Two important aspects that are often overlooked are: variable groundwater behavior of faults (conduit, barrier, conduit-barrier), and role of groundwater connectivity between fractures that cross the tunnel and the rest of the rock massif. These two aspects should be taken into account in the geological and groundwater characterization to correct the tunnel design and minimize hazards. A geological study and a preliminary hydrogeological characterization (including a prior steady state investigation and cross bore-hole tests) were carried out in a granitic sector during the construction of Line 9 of the Barcelona subway (B-20 area). The hydrogeological conceptual model was constructed using a quasi-3D numerical model, and different scenarios were calibrated. Faults and dikes show a conduit-barrier behavior, which partially compartmentalized the groundwater flow. The barrier behavior, which is the most marked effect, is more prominent in faults, whereas conduit behavior is more notable in dikes. The characterization of groundwater media entailed a dewatering plan and changes in the tunnel course. This enabled us to construct the tunnel without any problems

    Las acciones explosivas en el fútbol se triplican respecto a los años 60, llegando a las 200-215 acciones explosivas/partido. Esto supone que la potencia muscular y la capacidad de recuperación sean factores limitantes, pudiendo ser frecuentes las lesiones musculares. Durante la lesión se pierden las cualidades condicionales, menos cuanto más corto sea este periodo. Existen diversos métodos para la mejora de la fuerza y capacidad de recuperación mediante las plataformas vibratorias y la hipoxia intermitente (HI). Mostramos resultados de una intervención con plataforma vibratoria y HI en futbolistas convalescientes de una rotura fibrilar. Este nuevo modelo de entrenamiento puede permitir mejoras la fuerza máxima (p<0,05) y capacidadde recuperación (p<0,05) ayudando en gran medida a no perder las cualidades condicionales.Explosive actions in football are three times over 60 years, reaching 200-215 explosive actions /match. This means that for an elite player, muscular power and resilience are performance limiting factors, which may be frequent muscular injuries. During the injury, conditional qualities are lost, the less the shorter the period. There are several methods for improving the strength and resilience, emphasizing the body vibration training and intermittent hypoxia (IH). In this study, results of an intervention HI vibrating platform and players who have been convalescing from a hamstring injury are shown. The results obtained suggest that this new training model allows for improvements in the levels of maximum force (p <0.05) and resilience (p <0.05). This helps keep the conditional qualities greatly

    Implications of Climate Change for Agricultural Pest Management

    Termination ReportThe University Archives has determined that this item is of continuing value to OSU's history.The thermal requirements of crops and insect pests differ significantly; their differential thermal requirements will govern how climate change impacts pest management needs and practices. To investigate the impact of climate change on pest management and the implications for farming communities, we have connected EPIC, a field-scale crop management model, with a temperature-driven model of insect population development (GILSM). EPIC was used to model the corn and soybean rotation common in the Midwest, and GILSM was programmed to model the growth of nine insect pests of corn and/or soybeans. Output from the model system was input to a geographic information system covering the eight-state corn-belt (Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Missouri, Nebraska and Ohio). The models were driven using GFDL-CM2 climate scenario data developed for the period 1901-2100 as part of NOA and IPCC investigations of global climate change. Over the past 100 years, crop productivity has increased several fold as a result of improved cultivation methods, fertilizers and pesticides, and plant breeding. In order to remove the confounding of changes in technology and possible climate change over the past century and unknown changes to come in the next century, a standard crop production protocol was used from 1901-2100. Using the crop production practices used most commonly in 2000 (the midpoint of the period), EPIC/GILSM was run for four 50 year periods (1901-1950, 1951-2000, 2001-2050 and 2051-2100) and the changes in crop yield and insect abundance were examined between periods. Nine insect pests found throughout the region were modeled to examine the range of likely responses of insect pests to climate change and the possible change in crop protection needs over the next 100 years. As expected, the model predicted little or no change between the first and second periods. For most species, change was maximum in the third period and less during the fourth period. In every case the isoclines for pest population density and crop productivity moved northwards, but at different rates, resulting in the isoclines for crop damage increasing as they moved northward. In two cases the pest abundance declined locally even as productivity increased, resulting in a net increase in productivity. No allowance was made for changes in agronomic practices or improvements in breeding pest resistance, both of which have helped to improve productivity over the past century.SEEDS-The OARDC Research Enhancement Competitive Grants Program: Interdisciplinary Team Research Competitio

    Impact of alpha-synuclein spreading on the nigrostriatal dopaminergic pathway depends on the onset of the pathology

    Misfolded alpha-synuclein spreads along anatomically connected areas through the brain, prompting progressive neurodegeneration of the nigrostriatal pathway in Parkinson's disease. To investigate the impact of early stage seeding and spreading of misfolded alpha-synuclein along with the nigrostriatal pathway, we studied the pathophysiologic effect induced by a single acute alpha-synuclein preformed fibrils (PFFs) inoculation into the midbrain. Further, to model the progressive vulnerability that characterizes the dopamine (DA) neuron life span, we used two cohorts of mice with different ages: 2-month-old (young) and 5-month-old (adult) mice. Two months after a-synuclein PFFs injection, we found that striatal DA release decreased exclusively in adult mice. Adult DA neurons showed an increased level of pathology spreading along with the nigrostriatal pathway accompanied with a lower volume of alpha-synuclein deposition in the midbrain, impaired neurotransmission, rigid DA terminal composition, and less microglial reactivity compared with young neurons. Notably, preserved DA release and increased microglial coverage in the PFFs-seeded hemisphere coexist with decreased large-sized terminal density in young DA neurons. This suggests the presence of a targeted pruning mechanism that limits the detrimental effect of alpha-synuclein early spreading. This study suggests that the impact of the pathophysiology caused by misfolded alpha-synuclein spreading along the nigrostriatal pathway depends on the age of the DA network, reducing striatal DA release specifically in adult mice
