INSERTING JAVANESE ACRONYMS FOR TEACHING GRAMMAR RULES: A Theoretical Assumption

    Get PDF
Teaching grammar approaches have been applied one after another in the class for quite some time. However, the approaches may match to some students and may not to some others. The appropriateness and the effective usage of teaching grammar approaches can help students to facilitate the language process more comprehend (Thornbury.2006). Oxford (1989) states that there is a relationship between students‘ variables and the choice of Language Learning Strategies (LLSs). Students‘ variable likes students‘ background language can be used as a media to transfer the grammar. For example when Javanese students learn English grammar, then the strategy used can be linked with the Javanese way of thinking. In addition, there must be an appropriate strategy to bridge between the LLSs and the students‘ language background. Teaching grammar using acronyms is one of the ways to bridge between LLSs and Javanese in the class

This study aimed at reporting the implementation of the use of digitized local folklores to empower reading comprehension skills of junior high school students. This classroom action study was applied to a number of grade VII junior high school students. It engaged two stories about Palembang City - the Origin of Musi River and the History of Ikan Belido (Chitala Lopis). Both stories were “packaged” digitally by the use of video, and extended with guided ICT based post-reading activities. Video as one medium of the learning activities could confidently intensify students’ interest in learning due to the fact that most students tend to be more visualized. The result revealed that the use of this digitized media positively enhanced the students on the extent of the pleasure, imaginative visual learning aids, and the involvement and touched upon cultural aspects of the students

    Extracting News Events from Microblogs

Twitter stream has become a large source of information for many people, but the magnitude of tweets and the noisy nature of its content have made harvesting the knowledge from Twitter a challenging task for researchers for a long time. Aiming at overcoming some of the main challenges of extracting the hidden information from tweet streams, this work proposes a new approach for real-time detection of news events from the Twitter stream. We divide our approach into three steps. The first step is to use a neural network or deep learning to detect news-relevant tweets from the stream. The second step is to apply a novel streaming data clustering algorithm to the detected news tweets to form news events. The third and final step is to rank the detected events based on the size of the event clusters and growth speed of the tweet frequencies. We evaluate the proposed system on a large, publicly available corpus of annotated news events from Twitter. As part of the evaluation, we compare our approach with a related state-of-the-art solution. Overall, our experiments and user-based evaluation show that our approach on detecting current (real) news events delivers a state-of-the-art performance

The Human Rights Centre at Ghent University (the HRC) first initiated the present research while preparing an amicus curiae brief in the Lachiri v. Belgium case before the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR). The applicant in Lachiri, who was a civil party in legal proceedings concerning the murder of her brother, was denied access to a Brussels courtroom after refusing to remove her Islamic headscarf . Ms. Lachiri’s admission was refused in reliance on Article 759 of the Belgian Judicial Code (Gerechtelijk Wetboek/ Code Judiciaire), which provides that “[t]he audience will attend the sessions with their heads uncovered, respectfully and silently; whatever the judge commands for the maintenance of order will be punctually and immediately executed.” In its third-party intervention, the HRC sought to supply the ECtHR with additional information concerning three points: the debate on the wearing of Islamic headscarves in Belgium, the history, object and purpose of Article 759 of the Belgian Judicial Code, and the scope of the State margin of appreciation in prohibiting religious items of clothing

Deposition of a thin layer of Zinc Oxide (ZnO) on glass substrates by spray coating techniques has been done. ZnO is a semiconductor with band gap energy of ~ 3.2 eV and has the properties as oxidation photo catalysts that will transform harmful compounds and toxic substances in water into harmless compounds. ZnO thin film deposition is conducted by making gel ZnO with dissolving zinc acetate dehydrate (Zn(COOCH3)2.2H2O into a solution of isopropanol ((CH3)2CHOH) and monoethanolamine (MEA: HOCH2CH2NH2) at room temperature with a concentration of 0.3 M zinc acetate and the molar ratio is 1:1. ZnO gel is placed on the spray hole and sprayed on a glass substrate which has been heated at a temperature of 250°C at a pressure of 70 psi to form a thin layer. A thin layer is sintered at a temperature of 450°C for 2 hours. A ZnO thin layer then used as a photocatalytic and photochemical degradatioan of methylene blue (MB) with and without stirring. The microstructure analysis by using XRD show that the thin layers having polycrystalline wurtzite structure with orientations (100), (002), (101) and (110). EDS characterization showed that thin layers of ZnO consists of 50.27% and 49.73% zinc and oxygen atomic, respectively. ZnO photocatalyst reaction by using ultra violet light (UV) for 3 hours has been reduces the concentration of MB until 97.05%. A high percentage of color degradation MB performed by treatment with stirring
