Epidemiology of injuries in professional and amateur spanish paddle players
Se realizó un estudio epidemiológico descriptivo, observacional y retrospectivo, analizando la incidencia y las características de las lesiones sufridas por jugadores de pádel españoles profesionales y no profesionales. Se registraron las lesiones sufridas por 478 jugadores entre el 1 de enero y el 31 de diciembre de 2016. Se registraron datos sobre el número de lesiones, lesiones más frecuentes, distribución, tipo, ubicación, el momento en que ocurrieron y la causa de las lesiones que afectan el sistema locomotor. La tasa de lesiones en esta población fue de 2,75 lesiones por 1000 horas de exposición al riesgo. Las lesiones leves y aquellas con mecanismos de lesión intrínseca fueron las más frecuentes, y tuvieron lugar el final de la práctica deportiva. La extremidad inferior fue el área corporal más lesionada, y el tejido más lesionado fue el sistema musculo-tendinoso. We sought to analyse the incidence and features of injuries sustained by professional and non-professional Spanish Padel players. In total, 478 injuries were registered in 2016 from January 1st to December 31st. We collected data on the number of injuries, the most frequent injuries, their distribution, type, location, the moment at which these occurred and the cause of the injuries affecting the locomotor system. Efecto alelopático de especies invasoras de ribera sobre la germinación de especies del sotobosque
9 páginas. -- Trabajo presentado en la 50ª Reunión Científica de la SEEPLa producción de sustancias alelopáticas por las especies vegetales contribuye a incrementar su éxito competitivo frente a otras especies coexistentes dentro de un mismo hábitat, pudiendo llegar incluso a eliminarlas. Las sustancias alelopáticas pueden inhibir la germinación y el crecimiento de otras especies de la comunidad. En los bosques de ribera se ha detectado la presencia de árboles exóticos
con potencial invasor en otros ecosistemas pero se desconoce su efecto sobre las especies autóctonas herbáceas. Nuestra hipótesis es que las especies invasoras podrían utilizar la producción de aleloquímicos de una manera eficiente para desplazar a las especies herbáceas autóctonas, pudiendo llegar a eliminarlas.
El objetivo del presente trabajo fue estudiar el efecto extractos de hojarasca de especies alóctonas arbóreas (Ulmus pumila, Robinia pseudoacacia, Ailanthus altissima) y autóctonas (Populus alba) sobre la germinación de cuatro especies herbáceas frecuentes en el sotobosque del bosque de
ribera del rio Henares (Madrid). Los resultados mostraron una disminución de la velocidad de germinación de B. phoenicoides y
B. sylvaticum con los extractos de las especies alóctonas y autóctonas excepto para el olmo siberiano. Chenopodium album no se vio perjudicada por los extractos de las especies alóctonas pero sí por lo de la especie autóctona. La velocidad de germinación de Dactylis glomerata fue afectada por los extractos de todas las especies alóctonas. Se concluye que no existe un efecto consistente de los extractos
de las hojas de árboles exóticos sobre las herbáceas nativas, sino que éstos dependen tanto de la naturaleza del árbol donante como de la herbácea receptora.Plants produce allelopathic substances increasing their competitive success over other species coexisting within the same habitat, being able to eliminate them. compete against native herbaceous species. The aim of this work was to assess the effects of leaf extracts of invasive species (Ulmus pumila, Robinia pseudoacacia, Ailanthus altissima) and native (Populus alba) on the germination of four grass species frequent in the forest understory bank of the river Henares (Madrid). The results showed that extracts of alien and native species (except Siberian elm) decreased the germination speed of B. phoenicoides and B. sylvaticum. K+ channels expression in hypertension after arterial injury, and effect of selective Kv1.3 blockade with PAP-1 on intimal hyperplasia formation
Producción CientíficaK+ channels are central to vascular pathophysiology. Previous results demonstrated that phenotypic modulation associates with a change in Kv1.3 to Kv1.5 expression, and that Kv1.3 blockade inhibits proliferation of VSMCs cultures.
Purpose: To explore whether the Kv1.3 to Kv1.5 switch could be a marker of the increased risk of intimal hyperplasia in essential hypertension and whether systemic treatment with Kv1.3 blockers can prevent intimal hyperplasia after endoluminal lesion . Methods: Morphometric and immunohistochemical analysis were performed in arterial segments following arterial injury and constant infusion of the Kv1.3 blocker PAP-1 during 28 days. Differential expression of K+ channel genes was studied in VSMC from hypertensive (BPH) and normotensive (BPN) mice, both in control and after endoluminal lesion. Finally, the migration and proliferation rate of BPN and BPH VSMCs was explored in vitro.
Results: Changes in mRNA expression led to an increased Kv1.3/Kv1.5 ratio in BPH VSMC. Consistent with this, arterial injury in BPH mice induced a higher degree of luminal stenosis, (84±4 % vs. 70±5 % in BPN, p<0.01), although no differences in migration and proliferation rate were observed in cultured VSMCs. The in vivo proliferative lesions were significantly decreased upon PAP-1 systemic infusion (18± 6 % vs. 58±20 % with vehicle, p<0.05).
Conclusions: Hypertension leads to a higher degree of luminal stenosis in our arterial injury model, that correlates with a decreased expression of Kv1.5 channels. Kv1.3 blockers decreased in vitro VSMCs proliferation, migration, and in vivo intimal hyperplasia formation, pointing to Kv1.3 channels as promising therapeutical targets against restenosis.La versión original del artículo contiene un error. Performance of spanish white Macael marble exposed to narrow- and medium-range temperature cycling
Se aplican ciclos de estrés térmico de medio (100/-20 ºC
y 75/-20 ºC) y bajo (50/-20 ºC) rango sobre probetas de
mármol blanco de Macael (Almería, España), y se evalúa
ciclo a ciclo su incidencia mediante ultrasonidos. Los
resultados indican un considerable descenso de velocidad
de los ultrasonidos en las muestras sometidas a estrés de
100/-20 ºC, más moderado en el caso de 75/-20 ºC, poco
significativo en el caso de 50/-20 ºC. Las variaciones de
velocidad tienen lugar durante los primeros 5-7 ciclos,
permaneciendo los valores constantes en ciclos posteriores.
Los resultados proporcionados por medidas de dureza
de Schmidt, y de rotura por compresión uniaxial son
coincidentes con los proporcionados por los ultrasonidos.
Las imágenes de microscopía petrográfica y electrónica
(SEM) manifiestan una cierta descohesión granular en
zonas muy superficiales de las probetas sometidas a 40
ciclos de 100/-20 ºC. La coincidencia entre los datos por
las técnicas de rotura por compresión, medidas de dureza
superficial y ultrasonidos indican la validez de estas
dos últimas —técnicas no destructivas, NDT— en el control
de la incidencia de ciclos de stress térmico sobre las
características mecánicas de materiales pétreos.White marble specimens from Macael in the Spanish
province of Almeria were exposed to narrow- (50/
-20 ºC) and medium- (100/-20 ºC and 75/-20 ºC) range
thermal stress cycles. The effects were monitored with
ultrasound techniques. Ultrasound velocity declined
considerably in samples subjected to 100/-20 ºC cycles,
more moderately when the range was 75/-20 ºC and
insignificantly when it was narrowed to 50/-20 ºC. All
variations were recorded in the first five to seven
cycles, with values flattening thereafter. The Schmidt
hardness and compression test results concurred with
the ultrasound findings. Petrographic and scanning
electron microscope (SEM) imaging revealed some very
superficial granular decohesion in the specimens
subjected to forty 100/-20 ºC cycles. The concurrent
results from compression testing on the one hand and
surface hardness and ultrasound measurements on the
other confirmed the validity of the latter two nondestructive
techniques (NDT) for determining the
effects of thermal stress cycling on stone mechanical

Selection for growth is associated in gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) with diet flexibility, changes in growth patterns and higher intestine plasticity
Farmed gilthead sea bream (Sparus aurata) is able to grow efficiently with new feed formulations based on plant ingredients. Here, two experimental diets with standard and high inclusion levels of plant ingredients were formulated to assess the suited use of plant-based diets in fish with different growth genetic backgrounds. To pursue this issue, a long-term feeding trial (12-months) was conducted with fish (17 g initial body weight) of 16 families coming from the broodstock of PROGENSA project, that were grown communally in the IATS-CSIC experimental facilities. All fish in the study (2545) were PIT-tagged, and their pedigree was re-constructed with 96% success by using a SMsa1 multiplex of 11 microsatellites, which revealed the main parents contributions of 5 females and 6 males. Each diet was randomly assigned to replicate 3000 L tanks, gathering each replicate a similar family composition through all the feeding trial. Data on growth performance highlighted a strong ge- netic effect on growth trajectories, associated with enhanced growth during winter in fish selected for faster growth. No main dietary effects were found on growth rates or condition factor, and regression-correlation analyses of growth rates across families on both diets suggest that genome by diet interaction was weak, while genetic variation accounted for most of the growth phenotypic variation. Hepatosomatic index (HSI) and me- senteric fat index (MSI) of five families, covering the growth variability of the population, were regulated nu- tritionally and genetically, but without statistically significant genome by diet interactions. Fish from faster growing families showed shorter intestines after being fed the control diet, but this phenotype was masked by the enriched plant-based diet. Collectively, the results demonstrate that selection for faster growth is associated in gilthead sea bream with different growth trajectories and a high diet flexibility and intestine plasticity.Versión del editor2,04

Sickness presenteeism in Spanish-born and immigrant workers in Spain
<p>Abstract</p> <p><b>Background</b></p> <p>Previous studies have shown that immigrant workers face relatively worse working and employment conditions, as well as lower rates of sickness absence than native-born workers. This study aims to assess rates of sickness presenteeism in a sample of Spanish-born and foreign-born workers according to different characteristics.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A cross-sectional survey was conducted amongst a convenience sample of workers (Spanish-born and foreign-born), living in four Spanish cities: Barcelona, Huelva, Madrid and Valencia (2008-2009). Sickness presenteeism information was collected through two items in the questionnaire ("Have you had health problems in the last year?" and "Have you ever had to miss work for any health problem?") and was defined as worker who had a health problem (answered yes, first item) and had not missed work (answered no, second item). For the analysis, the sample of 2,059 workers (1,617 foreign-born) who answered yes to health problems was included. After descriptives, logistic regressions were used to establish the association between origin country and sickness presenteeism (adjusted odds ratios aOR; 95% confidence interval 95%CI). Analyses were stratified per time spent in Spain among foreign-born workers.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>All of the results refer to the comparison between foreign-born and Spanish-born workers as a whole, and in some categories relating to personal and occupational conditions. Foreign-born workers were more likely to report sickness presenteeism compared with their Spanish-born counterparts, especially those living in Spain for under 2 years [Prevalence: 42% in Spanish-born and 56.3% in Foreign-born; aOR 1.77 95%CI 1.24-2.53]. In case of foreign-born workers (with time in Spain < 2 years), men [aOR 2.31 95%CI 1.40-3.80], those with university studies [aOR 3.01 95%CI 1.04-8.69], temporary contracts [aOR 2.26 95%CI 1.29-3.98] and salaries between 751-1,200€ per month [aOR 1.74 95% CI 1.04-2.92] were more likely to report sickness presenteeism. Also, recent immigrants with good self-perceived health and good mental health were more likely to report presenteeism than Spanish-born workers with the same good health indicators.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Immigrant workers report more sickness presenteeism than their Spanish-born counterparts. These results could be related to precarious work and employment conditions of immigrants. Immigrant workers should benefit from the same standards of social security, and of health and safety in the workplace that are enjoyed by Spanish workers.</p
Deterioro y Conservación de Materiales Geológicos del Patrimonio
La actividad investigadora desarrollada por el Instituto de Geociencias en el campo del deterioro y conservación de materiales geológicos parten siempre de la caracterización petrológica y mineralógica de los materiales utilizados en el patrimonio. Se utilizan técnicas petrográficas, geoquímicas y petrofísicas, con apoyo de técnicas mineralógicas y cristalográficas para establecer su estado de conservación y definir las causas de alteración. Los avances del conocimiento se dirigen a establecer la interrelación entre las propiedades de los materiales pétreos, tanto de superficie como internas, con el medio ambiente. Desde la petrología y la mineralogía experimental se abordan problemas referentes a la mejora de productos de conservación, en base a sus características petrofísicas y a su comportamiento en ambientes agresivos. Con estas investigaciones se pueden determinar las técnicas de conservación más eficaces e idóneas para cada tipo de material y ambientes a los que se encuentran sometidos los materiales. Por lo tanto, la investigación se inicia con la caracterización, continúa estableciendo las causas de deterioro y, por último, ofrece soluciones para mejorar la calidad de los materiales e incrementar su durabilidad, desarrollando técnicas de conservación que han generado patentes
