    Impact of Ramaekers Immune Primer on Finishing Beef Cattle Performance and Liver Abscess Rate

    A feedlot study was conducted comparing a natural feed additive (Ramaekers Immune Primer) to Tylan or nothing on receiving and finishing performance. There were no differences for final BW, ADG, F:G, HCW, marbling, LM area, or fat thickness due to treatment. Liver abscess incidence and severity were reduced in steers fed Tylan, no differences were noted between Ramaekers Immune Primer and no additive. There was no difference in number of cattle treated for respiratory illness. Steers on the Ramaekers Immune Primer treatment had lower feed intake during the receiving period but had similar ADG and numerically better F:G at day 19 compared the control. These results suggest Ramaekers Immune Primer may be more beneficial, leading to increased performance, for younger, naive calves during the receiving phase

    Hydrological and seasonal controls of phosphorus in Northern Great Plains agricultural streams

    PostprintControls on nutrient transport in cold, low relief agricultural regions vary dramatically among seasons. The spring snowmelt is often the dominant runoff and nutrient loading event of the year. However, climate change may increase the proportion of runoff occurring with rainfall and there is an urgent need to understand seasonal controls on nutrient transport in order to understand how patterns may change in the future. In this study, we assess patterns and drivers of total phosphorus (TP) dynamics in eight streams draining agriculturally-dominated watersheds, located in southern Manitoba, Canada. Data from three years of monitoring revealed highly coherent patterns of TP concentrations in streams, with pronounced peaks in the spring and mid- summer across the region. This coherent pattern was in spite of considerable interannual variability in the magnitude and timing of discharge; in particular, a major storm event occurred in summer 2014, which resulted in more discharge than the preceding spring melt. Concentration-discharge model fits were generally poor or not significant, suggesting that runoff generation is not the primary driver of TP dynamics in the majority of streams. Seasonal patterns of conductivity and stream temperature suggest mechanisms controlling TP vary by season; a spring TP concentration maximum may be related to surface runoff over frozen soils while the summer TP maximum may be related to temperature-driven biogeochemical processes, which are not well-represented in current conceptual or predictive models. These findings suggest that controls on stream TP concentrations are dynamic through the year, and responses to increases in dormant and non-dormant season temperatures may depend on seasonally-variable processes

    Design and Control of Perylene Supramolecular Polymers through Imide Substitutions

    The number and type of new supramolecular polymer (SMP) systems have increased rapidly in recent years. Some of the key challenges faced for these novel systems include gaining full control over the mode of self‐assembly, the creation of novel architectures and exploring functionality. Here, we provide a critical overview of approaches related to perylene‐based SMPs and discuss progress to exert control over these potentially important SMPs through chemical modification of the imide substituents. Imide substitutions affect self‐assembly behaviour orthogonally to the intrinsic optoelectronic properties of the perylene core, making for a valuable approach to tune SMP properties. Several recent approaches are therefore highlighted, with a focus on controlling 1) morphology, 2) H‐ or J‐ aggregation, and 3) mechanism of growth and degree of aggregation using thermodynamic and kinetic control. Areas of potential future exploration and application of these functional SMPs are also explored

    Phase Behavior and Substitution Limit of Mixed Cesium-Formamidinium Lead TriIodide Perovskites

    The mixed cation lead iodide perovskite photovoltaics show improved stability following site substitution of cesium ions (Cs+) onto the formamidinium cation sites (FA+) of (CH(NH2)2PbI3 (FAPbI3) and increased resistance to formation of the undesirable ∂-phase. The structural phase behavior of Cs0.1FA0.9PbI3 has been investigated by neutron powder diffraction (NPD), complemented by single crystal and power X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The Cs-substitution limit has been determined to be less than 15%, and the cubic α-phase, Cs0.1FA0.9PbI3, is shown to be synthesizable in bulk and stable at 300 K. On cooling the cubic Cs0.1FA0.9PbI3, a slow, second-order cubic to tetragonal transition is observed close to 290 K, with variable temperature NPD indicating the presence of the tetragonal ÎČ-phase, adopting the space group P4/mbm between 290 and 180 K. An orthorhombic phase or twinned tetragonal phase is formed below 180 K, and the temperature for further transition to a disordered state is lowered to 125 K compared to that seen in phase pure α-FAPbI3 (140 K). These results demonstrate the importance of understanding the effect of cation site substitution on structure–property relationships in perovskite materials

    HST hot-Jupiter transmission spectral survey: Haze in the atmosphere of WASP-6b

    We report Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical to near-infrared transmission spectroscopy of the hot Jupiter WASP-6b, measured with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph (STIS) and Spitzer's InfraRed Array Camera (IRAC). The resulting spectrum covers the range 0.29−4.5 Ό0.29-4.5\,\mum. We find evidence for modest stellar activity of WASP-6b and take it into account in the transmission spectrum. The overall main characteristic of the spectrum is an increasing radius as a function of decreasing wavelength corresponding to a change of Δ(Rp/R∗)=0.0071\Delta (R_p/R_{\ast})=0.0071 from 0.33 to 4.5 Ό4.5\,\mum. The spectrum suggests an effective extinction cross-section with a power law of index consistent with Rayleigh scattering, with temperatures of 973±144973\pm144 K at the planetary terminator. We compare the transmission spectrum with hot-Jupiter atmospheric models including condensate-free and aerosol-dominated models incorporating Mie theory. While none of the clear-atmosphere models is found to be in good agreement with the data, we find that the complete spectrum can be described by models that include significant opacity from aerosols including Fe-poor Mg2_2SiO4_4, MgSiO3_3, KCl and Na2_2S dust condensates. WASP-6b is the second planet after HD189733b which has equilibrium temperatures near ∌1200\sim1200 K and shows prominent atmospheric scattering in the optical.Comment: 18 pages, 15 figures, 7 table

    Oxygen and nitrogen abundances in Virgo and field spirals

    The oxygen and nitrogen abundances in the HII regions of the nine Virgo spirals of the sample from Skillman et al (1996) and in nine field spiral galaxies are re-determined with the recently suggested P - method. We confirm that there is an abundance segregation in the sample of Virgo spirals in the sense that the HI deficient Virgo spirals near the core of the cluster have higher oxygen abundances in comparison to the spirals at the periphery of the Virgo cluster. At the same time both the Virgo periphery and core spirals have counterparts among field spirals. We conclude that if there is a difference in the abundance properties of the Virgo and field spirals, this difference appears to be small and masked by the observational errors.Comment: 16 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysic

    Stellar activity of planetary host star HD 189733

    Extra-solar planet search programs require high-precision velocity measurements. They need to study how to disentangle radial-velocity variations due to Doppler motion from the noise induced by stellar activity. We monitored the active K2V star HD 189733 and its transiting planetary companion that has a 2.2-day orbital period. We used the high-resolution spectograph SOPHIE mounted on the 1.93-m telescope at the Observatoire de Haute-Provence to obtain 55 spectra of HD 189733 over nearly two months. We refined the HD 189733b orbit parameters and put limits on the eccentricity and on a long-term velocity gradient. After subtracting the orbital motion of the planet, we compared the variability of spectroscopic activity indices to the evolution of the radial-velocity residuals and the shape of spectral lines. The radial velocity, the spectral-line profile and the activity indices measured in HeI (5875.62 \AA), Halpha (6562.81 \AA) and the CaII H&K lines (3968.47 \AA and 3933.66 \AA, respectively) show a periodicity around the stellar rotation period and the correlations between them are consistent with a spotted stellar surface in rotation. We used such correlations to correct for the radial-velocity jitter due to stellar activity. This results in achieving high precision on the orbit parameters, with a semi-amplitude K = 200.56 \pm 0.88 m.s-1 and a derived planet mass of M_{P}=1.13 \pm 0.03 MJup_{Jup}.Comment: 9 pages, 2 tables, 9 figures, accepted for publication in A&A on 20/11/200

    A digestion study evaluated three corn silage hybrids for growing crossbred steers. The three hybrids were: a standard corn silage hybrid which served as the control, a brown midrib hybrid (bm3), and an experimental bm3 hybrid with a softer endosperm. Both bm3 hybrids had greater organic matter and fiber digestibility compared to the control corn silage. However, no differences were observed between the two bm3 hybrids. Rumen pH was reduced for BM3 and BM3-EXP compared to the control suggesting greater rumen fermentation. In vitro gas production was increased for the bm3 hybrids compared to the control further supporting greater rumen fermentation
