Extended Riemannian Geometry II: Local Heterotic Double Field Theory
We continue our exploration of local Double Field Theory (DFT) in terms of
symplectic graded manifolds carrying compatible derivations and study the case
of heterotic DFT. We start by developing in detail the differential graded
manifold that captures heterotic Generalized Geometry which leads to new
observations on the generalized metric and its twists. We then give a
symplectic pre-NQ-manifold that captures the symmetries and the geometry of
local heterotic DFT. We derive a weakened form of the section condition, which
arises algebraically from consistency of the symmetry Lie 2-algebra and its
action on extended tensors. We also give appropriate notions of twists-which
are required for global formulations-and of the torsion and Riemann tensors.
Finally, we show how the observed -corrections are interpreted
naturally in our framework.Comment: v2: 30 pages, few more details added, typos fixed, published versio
The Future Navy—Near-Term Applications of Artificial Intelligence
Many examples of task automation using artificial intelligence exist in private industry. The U.S. military has a great opportunity to exploit these developments and adapt them for use throughout the force, particularly in areas such as logistics and administration, freeing up man-hours and resources for other, more-complex activities
Working Paper: Open Government Data
A novel ion channel formed by interaction of TRPML3 with TRPV5.
TRPML3 and TRPV5 are members of the mucolipin (TRPML) and TRPV subfamilies of transient receptor potential (TRP) cation channels. Based on sequence similarities of the pore forming regions and on structure-function evidence, we hypothesized that the pore forming domains of TRPML and TRPV5/TRPV6 channels have similarities that indicate possible functional interactions between these TRP channel subfamilies. Here we show that TRPML3 and TRPV5 associate to form a novel heteromeric ion channel. This novel conductance is detectable under conditions that do not activate either TRPML3 or TRPV5. It has pharmacological similarity with TRPML3 and requires functional TRPML3 as well as functional TRPV5. Single channel analyses revealed that TRPML3 and TRPV5 heteromers have different features than the respective homomers, and furthermore, that they occur in potentially distinct stoichiometric configurations. Based on overlapping expression of TRPML3 and TRPV5 in the kidney and the inner ear, we propose that TRPML3 and TRPV5 heteromers could have a biological function in these organs
Dust and gas emission from cometary nuclei: the case of comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko
Comets display with decreasing solar distance an increased emission of gas
and dust particles, leading to the formation of the coma and tail. Spacecraft
missions provide insight in the temporal and spatial variations of the dust and
gas sources located on the cometary nucleus. For the case of comet
67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko (67P/C-G), the long-term observations from the
Rosetta mission point to a homogeneous dust emission across the entire
illuminated surface. Despite the homogeneous initial distribution, a
collimation in jet-like structures becomes visible. We propose that this
observation is linked directly to the complex shape of the nucleus and projects
concave topographical features into the dust coma. To test this hypothesis, we
put forward a gas-dust description of 67P/C-G, where gravitational and gas
forces are accurately determined from the surface mesh and the rotation of the
nucleus is fully incorporated. The emerging jet-like structures persist for a
wide range of gas-dust interactions and show a dust velocity dependent bending.Comment: 17 pages, with 7 figures. To appear in Advances in Physics X (2018
Tree reconciliation combined with subsampling improves large scale inference of orthologous group hierarchies
Background: An orthologous group (OG) comprises a set of orthologous and paralogous genes that share a last common ancestor (LCA). OGs are defined with respect to a chosen taxonomic level, which delimits the position of the LCA in time to a specified speciation event. A hierarchy of OGs expands on this notion, connecting more general OGs, distant in time, to more recent, fine-grained OGs, thereby spanning multiple levels of the tree of life. Large scale inference of OG hierarchies with independently computed taxonomic levels can suffer from inconsistencies between successive levels, such as the position in time of a duplication event. This can be due to confounding genetic signal or algorithmic limitations. Importantly, inconsistencies limit the potential use of OGs for functional annotation and third-party applications.
Results: Here we present a new methodology to ensure hierarchical consistency of OGs across taxonomic levels. To resolve an inconsistency, we subsample the protein space of the OG members and perform gene tree-species tree reconciliation for each sampling. Differently from previous approaches, by subsampling the protein space, we avoid the notoriously difficult task of accurately building and reconciling very large phylogenies. We implement the method into a high-throughput pipeline and apply it to the eggNOG database. We use independent protein domain definitions to validate its performance.
Conclusion: The presented consistency pipeline shows that, contrary to previous limitations, tree reconciliation can be a useful instrument for the construction of OG hierarchies. The key lies in the combination of sampling smaller trees and aggregating their reconciliations for robustness. Results show comparable or greater performance to previous pipelines.
