Modern ITechnologies allows for limitless applications of DSP (digital signal processing) in the Biomedical Engineering, avoiding the once unavoidable analogue hardware conditioning and instrumentation pre-processing. This paper depicts two prominent applications of software processing in the fields of EEG and ECG

The Centre for Institutional Studies at the University of East London was commissioned by the Fit for Work Single Regeneration Budget Partnership to undertake an independent assessment of the Teenage Health Project in the London Borough of Newham. The aim of the research was to assess the progress the project made towards achieving its objectives to raise health awareness amongst young people. To complete the evaluation researchers observed workshops (14), interviewed two members of staff and analysed data from 11 questionnaires completed by tutors and 265 questionnaires completed by pupils. The workshops attended all addressed issues about relationships and sexual health

Le défigement à l’oral. À la recherche de défigements dans le corpus Discours sur la ville

One way of describing the characteristics of fixedness is to look at its theoretical opposite: the “defrosting” of lexical frozenness. Many researchers have pointed out the benefits of such a method (cf. Mejri, 2009: 162). The “defrosting” also represents one of the inherent features of fixedness. It can thus indicate the existence of a frozen expression that was there (before any change took place), but also have its very own function. Many studies show that “defrosting” is often used in playful contexts, such as commercial settings (Grunig, 1990) or in newspaper headlines (Sullet-Nylander, 1998; Jaki, 2014). But what can be said about puns and word plays in oral conversations? This study proposes to look at prefabricated sequences, but also at sequences that are probably representations of word play based on those very sequences. The corpus used is the oral corpus Discours sur la ville. Characteristics of Everyday Leisure Trips by Car in Sweden – Implications for Sustainability Measures

    Get PDF
In search for measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from transport, insights into the characteristics of all sorts of trips and specifically trips by car are needed. This paper focuses on everyday leisure trips for social and recreational purposes. Travel behaviour for these purposes is analysed considering individual and household factors as well as properties of the trip, based on Swedish national travel survey data. The analysis reveals that everyday leisure trips are often of joint character and that the average distance travelled per person and day increases with, for example, income, cohabitation, children in the household and residence in rural areas. The result also shows that the studied characteristics vary between studied trip purposes, influencing the sustainability potential of a reduction in car use and suggested measures. For instance, the largest share of passenger mileage comes from social trips, whereas trips for exercise and outdoor life have the largest share of car trips below 5 km. Several characteristics indicate difficulties in transferring trips by car to, for example, bicycle or public transport due to convenience, economy, start times, company etc. The study indicates that there is a need to take a broader view of the effective potential

The Centre for Institutional Studies at the University of East London was commissioned by the South Leytonstone SRB in August 2001 to undertake an independent evaluation of the Youth Technology Centre. The evaluation was focused on the extent to which the project had contributed to SRB Strategic Objective 1 to enhance the employment prospects, education and skills of local people and promote equality of opportunity. The fieldwork took place between October 2001 and February 2002 and a number of different methods were used to collate the data. It was agreed with the Project Manager that the evaluation should concentrate on those services that directly benefit from the SRB funding. The users of four different services were thus evaluated; the Internet cafe (30), the City and Guilds (8), the Learndirect (26) and the Cybersquads (10). A total of 78 people participated in the research including 74 users of the above facilities, the Project Manager (1), the Training and Development Co-ordinator (1), and two tutors

Gene array identification of Ipf1/Pdx1-/- regulated genes in pancreatic progenitor cells

<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The homeodomain transcription factor IPF1/PDX1 exerts a dual role in the pancreas; <it>Ipf1/Pdx1 </it>global null mutants fail to develop a pancreas whereas conditional inactivation of <it>Ipf1/Pdx1 </it>in β-cells leads to impaired β-cell function and diabetes. Although several putative target genes have been linked to the β-cell function of <it>Ipf1/Pdx1</it>, relatively little is known with respect to genes regulated by IPF1/PDX1 in early pancreatic progenitor cells.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Microarray analyses identified a total of 111 genes that were differentially expressed in e10.5 pancreatic buds of <it>Ipf1/Pdx1</it>-/- embryos. The expression of one of these, <it>Spondin 1</it>, which encodes an extracellular matrix protein, has not previously been described in the pancreas. Quantitative real-time RT-PCR analyses and immunohistochemical analyses also revealed that the expression of <it>FgfR2IIIb</it>, that encodes the receptor for FGF10, was down-regulated in <it>Ipf1/Pdx1</it>-/- pancreatic progenitor cells.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This microarray analysis has identified a number of candidate genes that are differentially expressed in <it>Ipf1/Pdx1</it>-/- pancreatic buds. Several of the differentially expressed genes were known to be important for pancreatic progenitor cell proliferation and differentiation whereas others have not previously been associated with pancreatic development.</p
